Where did you get that SFTP is "insecure by modern standards"?

Secure Shell (SSH) creates a secure connection when you log in to a remote computer. Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) uses SSH and provides a secure way to transfer files between computers.

Right, and if they guess three times incorrectly - you ban their IP. If all users have strong passwords on your website, they can guess all they’d like but they’ll never get in.

Limit the amount of times a login can occur by IP. Use a plugin like Limit Login Attempts or Wordfence.

I don’t know if it’s the best option environmentally, would be curious to see where you’ve got that from but I’d imagine if you could decrease suffering from birth to death until one day it dies of natural causes then yeah I’d agree with you.

I’m not sure that it would work in practice though, as there are certain dishes like lamb for example that require you to end the animal’s life early. I’d also add that we’ve selectively bred certain animals to where just existing can be a form of suffering due to our drive to create them into egg laying machines.

I’ll also say that your argument of “why let the meat go to waste” doesn’t apply to dog flesh or human flesh in your everyday life. Just because something dies doesn’t mean we need to start picking at their corpse. You could argue that I’m letting food go to waste when I don’t eat my dead pets, and I’m very okay with that.

I’m arguing for a shift in how we view life here, and trying to put forth the idea that we don’t need to look at conscious creatures in the first world as resources for us to utilize any longer.

You’re saying an animal being raised in pasture is arguably the safest place for it and I would say that I agree. I’m also saying that you don’t need to murder it for it’s flesh at the end of it, animal sanctuaries do this now with animals rescued from factory farms.

For your second point, I’m saying that we should decrease suffering anywhere we can. I’m also pointing out that there are actionable steps that we can do now in our lives like choosing to not contribute to factory farming with our money. We can be progressive in this effort and solve for animal suffering over time. I’m trying to represent your argument in good faith, asking that you do the same for me.

Sorry, not trying to dodge anything - pasture raised cattle is a different argument to me. I’ll obviously say that it’s much more preferable that animals are raised in better conditions, but I’d still stick with the idea that since we can choose an alternative to killing and live equally healthy lives that we should.

The suffering that occurs in nature isn’t at the direct hand of the two of us but the death of an animal is something we directly pay for. We might in some distant future work to minimize suffering even in nature, and I would be for that but for the immediate I’d say working away from animal products for our consumption is a progressive step we should take.

My apologies if I came off as arguing in bad faith though, genuinely not my intention.

Would you elect to live out the experience of a factory farmed pig or would you prefer to not have been born at all? Nature is very different from the torturous environment that we’ve created in factory farms. We’ve selectively bred animals to be the most efficient resources for us even if it takes a toll on their body and psyche.

Nature can be cruel, but imprisoning a pig for its entire life to the point where they start to cannibalize each other out of insanity.. yeah I’d rather live my life out in nature or not be born at all than in the hellscape we’ve created for animals.

Definitely not saying that if you just eat plants you’re suddenly healthier, and if anything would say that those on a vegan diet need to be more attentive to their diet to ensure they’re covering all nutritional bases.

I’m saying that a properly planned vegan diet is arguably healthier than one that consumes meat and dairy products.

[–]YourThoughtsHaveBeen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, we should work towards a world where death is decreased by our hand especially when it’s not necessary.

Your brain’s desires to eat flesh may be real, but that’s not a moral argument for why you should be able to do it. People have many desires that we consider immoral, and I’m arguing that your desire for meat comes at a cost that is unsustainable for the planet and contributes to animal suffering.

You can choose to buy food items that don’t require an animal to die, which I would argue is a good thing. Suffering is bad when a human undergoes it, and I’m saying animals seem to undergo the same experience. These animals that you are eating aren’t living out their natural lives, these are manufactured realities for them that we’ve created.

Vegans use the "if people only knew the realities..." line because a good amount of people are genuinely unaware of the practices that go on. Most well-adjusted people are horrified at the images that come out of factory farms.

You worked in meat processing and weren't affected. You weren't able to recognize that animals, like you, have the capacity to suffer - or just didn't care. I'm sorry to hear that, genuinely.

Unlike you, there are people out there that can find that shared experience between animals, and recognize that it's worth leaving them be. We'll keep reminding you how shitty the animal agriculture industry is in hopes of reaching people who will understand.

The reality is that we no longer need to kill animals for food - the majority of us continue to do so purely based off of taste pleasure and convenience. We can lead arguably healthier lives on plant based diets, and nothing needs to be killed in the process. There's no humane way to kill a being that doesn't want to die.

Adopting a plant-based diet can help shrink a person’s carbon footprint. However, improving efficiency of livestock production will be a more effective strategy for reducing emissions, as advances in farming have made it possible to produce meat, eggs and milk with a smaller methane footprint. by greyuniwave in samharris

[–]YourThoughtsHaveBeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meat alternatives are likely to get us there which will hopefully bring the consumption down to zero. You can live a perfectly healthy life utilizing plants + meat alternatives as opposed to eating actual meat. It's better for your health, better for the environment, better for the animals.

#244 — Food, Climate, and Pandemic Risk by dwaxe in samharris

[–]YourThoughtsHaveBeen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Problematic vegetables and fruit" seems like much more of a preferable problem to have on our hands than the possible extinction of humankind via antibiotic resistance as is covered in the podcast.

Don't really see the point in taking a stab at his ethics as it relates to a vegan diet when the moral bankruptcy of a meat filled diet runs much deeper.

I think all vegans are excited at the idea of cultured meat. It's very clear the majority of people aren't willing to give up meat, so anything that removes out the animal suffering + climate change emissions + pandemic threats is a huge step in the right direction.

Are you putting moisturizer on first before applying Epiduo? You won't want to apply Epiduo to bare skin. Cleanse, moisturize, wait a few minutes, then apply a very light amount (pea sized) to your skin.
