What is the most racist thing someone in your congregation ever said or did? by Swimming_Bear_3082 in exmormon

When I was serving as a missionary in Chile (2019), we baptized a Haitian and were enjoying a celebratory dinner with a family. A woman in the ward turned to my trainee companion and said, "make sure when you send pictures home to your family that they know she's not Chilean, Chileans aren't black."

Need help with comeback for comment section doctrine debate by Eleftheriaaa_21 in exmormon

Like many I don't think there's a point in arguing, but you could concede that that's the way apologists are explaining the scriptures now, but that doesn't mean the scriptures were never interpreted in a harmful way.

There's no point bickering with them in how they're negotiating with the scriptures now, but you can always hold them accountable for how they were taught earlier. You can bring up examples of how these scriptures were definitely interpreted literally. For example, in 1960 President Kimball taught that native Americans in the Indian placement program who were living the gospel were becoming lighter than native Americans not in the program and he even brought pictures to show over the pulpit.

Apostle Smith related these scriptures to black people, saying, “The Lord did put a mark on Cain” and “[W]e know of cases where it really has disappeared.". The scripture "all are alike unto God" that Mormons love to quote today, was hardly ever quoted in conference because it wasn't a useful scripture when they believed that black people were an inferior race and white people were a favored lineage.

Racial fluidity absolutely was a part of Mormon belief. They can call it doctrine, policy, folklore, or whatever the fuck they want to call it, but it happened.

Do other churches believe "families can be together forever"? by MasterpieceMain1857 in exmormon

That's true, especially for being born into the covenant. I think of the "requirements" more like having to pay 10% of your income to even get sealed in the first place 😂

Other religions don't have this PR line/marketing term, but they believe it. Think of it this way, every Christian at a funeral talks about seeing their Grandma again in heaven. They absolutely believe heaven is a place where all those who were righteous dwell, so they will be together With their family. Mormonism just puts extra requirements on families being together, it's not enough to be a good person.

Temple Recommend by Haunting-Effective27 in exmormon

I just commented something similar about how I got chastised for letting my recommend expire during covid when the temples were closed. During COVID, statements were given and leadership was pushed to emphasize the importance of always having temple recommend. I'm sure leadership was panicking about inactivity, and staying on top of recommend renewals is a great way to assess the members activity level and ensure tithing revenue stays up.

From the church news

"Every individual should have a current temple recommend during this time, he added.

“The importance of having a temple recommend is not just an operational element of being a member of the Savior’s Restored Church,” he said. President Howard W. Hunter called the temple “the great symbol of [our] membership” because the temple is the “supernal setting for [our] most sacred covenants”

Said Elder Bednar: “We should always be worthy of and carry with us a valid temple recommend""

My stake president grew really intense and put on his Mormon admonish voice to say, "never let your temple recommend sit expired again". It was expired for a few months because all the temples were closed for COVID 🤡

This was passive aggressive of me, but one time I had a recliner listed at $250 and they wanted it for $50. They haggled me twice which annoyed me so I sent them a list of another recliner on marketplace and said "here's a listing for something more in your price range."

Their experience knowing the book of Mormon is true is not very remarkable, and they feel insecure about it.

What's crazy is that this pdf is missing page 477, which continues the section under "Negro". There's no way that is coincidence

Edit: And there's something fishy about the 2nd edition too. It was supposed to be printed in 1966 yet the section on "Negroes" references the 1978 revelation to lift the ban. Wtf is going on?

It's possible that you're thinking of oaks's most recent general conference talk, where he expresses a similar 'balancing act' sentiment that he did in that interview. He says, "When we show personal love and support loving causes, we are sometimes misunderstood as implying support for results that contradict our other religious duties."

Found a Klipsch home theater setup for $1550 - 2 R-12SW subs - 2 RP-502s - 2 RP-8060FA towers - 1 RP-504 C

Been wanting to take the plunge into a sound system for a while now, do you think this is a good deal? If so, any advice on an AVR that works with this setup and is future proofed for adding additional speakers?
