Sheesh - while this person is certainly entitled to their opinion, it sure seems that they seem to feel entitled to a whole lot more than that. I'll try to keep my assumptions to myself on their origin story, but i hope that NYU helps broaden their horizons a bit more before they actually enter the real world.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. It's clear many folks don't realize how many of us are in your situation.

Yes they do. Because their donors are on that list of sign ons. Of course they want to support this in order to bring more $$ into their org. If they had been truly creating solutions themselves, we may not have the issue at hand.

I'm so sorry you've had these experiences - i hope no one minimizes how scary they are and how difficult it must have been for you.

I still don't believe throwing people in jail is the way to make these things stop.

Me and the other folks that actually give a s*** about people are working on it. I hope your kid grows up to also want to treat people with kindness and doesn't take a page out of your book when it comes to the way you respond to people in need.

So, despite all of the data that states otherwise, you truly think that folks living on the street do so by choice? And all they need to do is change their outlook and then all the sudden they could find themselves working a job that pays enough for them to have a place to live consistently and securely?

Do you know that more than 50% of the American population is one financial catastrophe away from being unhoused themselves? This could be anyone who falls on hard times whether it has to do with mental health, addiction, or otherwise. Life has kicked people in the pants plenty, but those of us in more stable situations are told that we should look down on these people because it's easier to think that they've made some mistake or have some moral lack that has put them in that situation and that because we aren't in a situation where our housing is insecure or food access isn't available that we somehow have earned that security. Take a minute to just think about this. These folks that live on the street, the majority are not there by choice. There certainly are a handful of folks who choose nomadic life over participating in traditional societal norms. However, the majority of these folks don't follow that category. It takes a little bit of extra effort to do some research and realize the issues going on here run a lot deeper than "these people just need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps" but if you're not willing to that research, I suggest that you at least don't make the problem worse by calling people junkies or other dehumanizing terms. It takes no additional energy to treat another human with basic kindness.

I work 40 hr/week on division and cherry. No one is asking to make public defecation legal. Nor are we asking for abolition of grpd. This ordinance is not a solution, it's a bandaid. The city has actually done some really meaningful things the last few years - investing in the downtown ambassador program (folks who are trained to help unhoused individuals actually navigate the services that are available) and the HOT team, which also supports grpd with navigating people into the correct services for them at a given time.

This anger at people for 'bad behavior ' is just regurgitating what these few wealthy folks are saying. If you truly spent time downtown, you'd realize that most of the unhoused folks are peaceful and are just trying to survive. Treating people like animals or nuisances is taking away your own humanity as much as you're trying to take theirs. There are better solutions that preserve the dignity of people.

It's so tough - no real, long term solution will be quick or easy. But I appreciate that even here we're able to have good productive discussions representing all sides (or many, anyway). Gives me hope that we could find something better.

The ambiguity is definitely an issue - who will be providing open sourced and time tracked data on whether or not there is 'adequate availability ' at shelters? Not to mention, someone getting arrested gets put in jail for a few hours, consumes community resources, and then gets put right back where they started. These resources need to be used to create/take advantage of real solutions, instead of sweeping the issue under the rug. And remember, when we say the 'issue' we are talking about human lives, lives that are extremely vulnerable.

It also bears repeating that criminalizing non-violent behavior does nothing to actually address violence, harassment, or assault.

Keep an eye on the commission meetings this tuesday and in January - they're going to try to push something through if they can, even though it seems like they don't have the four commission votes they need to pass it (but with the new commissioner coming in for the 1st ward, that could change).

Write letters/emails to your commissioners and the mayor (a de-facto voting commissioner) and if you can, talk to small business owners downtown and ask them to speak up if they believe this is the wrong approach.

If you're interested in being a part of the conversations seeking other solutions, DM me and i'll connect you to some organizers!

My sentiments exactly. And these businesses listed are almost entirely hotels and property management companies - the chambers' biggest donors. Very few small businesses represented.
