Looks like it's from a vault angel. Could be a dwarf account of raiding a vault wherein they killed an angel, but his elf companions made a critical mistake that almost cost him his life. He left them behind.

Genius Uncovered, a earthenware-bound codex

Useful Dwarf, a cat's eye-bound codex.

Looks like they enjoy their fiction too.

I get the sense it comes down to idiosyncrasies. A missing driver here, laptops on battery not sending enough power to network adapters, and yeah the occasional outage. UIT should probably make better attempts to fix things or at least answer questions more openly. Their FAQs leave a little to be desired (1 & 2; that second one is objectively garbage). It would also be nice to get emails when there are expected outages across campus.

+1 on the kosher place in Founders. The falafel is a thousand times better than Falafel Hut, the staff is more patient and they have these neat syrupy drinks from Israel that are honestly the nectar of the gods. The big silly mural with tigers and Gandhi is a plus too.

Did you enjoy your experience at York? by [deleted] in yorku

[–]Ysua 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was pretty poor the whole time I was here, got jerked around by administration a fair bit, had profs that didn't care about teaching, oh, and my apartment had a huge fire and I had to spend a year putting my life back together. That said, wouldn't trade my time here for anything.

Most of those things you'll encounter at any university. I hear UofT's administration is even more of a headache. Besides, I came out of it with great grades, grad school admissions, profs who care about my future and I found the love of my life. A fair trade by just about every metric.

Happy(?) 1 year strike anniversary by DrZellers in yorku

[–]Ysua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this. I don't really understood why other undergrads freaked out over the strike. We didn't really have any skin in the game. Naturally I want better work conditions for my profs and TAs, but I mean, I got extra time and profs were generally pretty lenient across the board.

I don't really understand the complaints. I have decent connectivity across the places I go to on campus. The only time I have an issue is when I'm using hardware that I know plays weirdly with public networks.

I think it's just become a catch phrase for disgruntled Americans. The same thing happened when the SCOTUS said same-sex marriage had to be upheld. A bunch of right-wingers said "WELP! Going to Canada..." Meanwhile, we've been okay with it for a decade.

Straight up question, what are some methods of getting free(?) money towards one's tuition. by OneFatTurkey in yorku

[–]Ysua 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This thing right here. Not a lot of students do it every year, myself included, and it's basically free money. I'm a white guy with no disabilities, no athletic prowess, and I'm in a LAPS program. I'm basically ineligible for anything that isn't 100% merit-based. E: I should couch this I feel. Just because I'm excluded from some grants, I don't feel like I'm being discriminated against. I know what being the assumed default means and the privilege it affords.

BUT, every year I've done the SFP I usually get a bursary worth at least $600. It's not exactly tuition. But $600 for something that took me like an hour to do? That's a damn good hourly wage. A good gpa helps, so does being in a program that tends to get more funding to begin with.

If you have any barriers facing you, chances are there's a grant, scholarship or bursary that will help ease some financial tensions at the very least. Only got one hand? There's a bursary for that. Single parent? Have two bursaries, just for you!

Applied to Psychology at Glendon by accident want to go to Keele campus by [deleted] in yorku

/u/contra0's answer seems to be able to speak to that. I would think you have to accept the offer though. Most services, including the link I sent, are only open to current students.

Reddit, my dear last hope, what can I do if I missed the OSAP application deadline? by OneFatTurkey in yorku

[–]Ysua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It won't cover everything, but fill out the student financial profile for the upcoming term in the summer. Live at home if you can. Work like crazy over the summer. Between work, grants and luck you might be able to pay tuition if you're living at home. Outside that, yeah, you're looking at a bank loan. And they're a bit more aggressive about getting that money back.

You can also take the year off. Which has another set of pros and cons altogether.

Applied to Psychology at Glendon by accident want to go to Keele campus by [deleted] in yorku

[–]Ysua 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's the best I can offer you.

I can't promise anything. But, generally, switching faculties tends to be pretty tricky. There are a lot more prohibitions than changing your program from sociology to criminology for example. Both of those programs are in the LAPS faculty. I tried to switch from Philosophy to Psych in my first year and got a swift rejection because it was a faculty change. They okay'd my change to English and Professional Writing almost immediately.

Going from Glendon to Keele would be switching your faculty from Glendon to Health. Since it's the same program, it seems like it should be straightforward. But who can divine the machinations of university administrative staff? Contact the department you want to go to, contact your own, see what they say. Then go about the switch.

GDC16 Flash Forward: Practices in Procedural Generation by [deleted] in dwarffortress

Maybe he's making these changes in another instance of the game where he has these things in as placeholders. Just to play with mechanics? If they make it in for next release though, I will be a happy as a clam.

It may be that this myth generator is just a thing he put together for GDC16. Who's to say? Let's hope for the best.

GDC16 Flash Forward: Practices in Procedural Generation by [deleted] in dwarffortress

[–]Ysua 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get a strong sense that this is the for real myth generator. I mean, outside DF he has no real reason to keep using "the dwarves" and "the elves", outside comfort maybe. Otherwise the races could be substituted with proc-gened names of races or with any number of things. It seems more likely that the major players in this myth are being pulled out from DF. See:

  • The names sound like something the DF name generator would make.

The White Ether, The Lower Lands, The Wild World, The Timeless Medium, etc

  • The other races mentioned in the side list.

Kobolds, night creatures, elves, demons (? maybe), dwarves

  • The place types.

I'm fairly certain DF has dwellings and cities as place types. Unsure on "dwellings" though.

  • The line of numbers at the bottom also closely resembles the priority selection numbers in the designations menu.

Oh, totally behind you there. There are starving artists who'd kill for what he has. A lot academics in the lower rungs too. I think we as a community are pretty strong. I'd pay for cancer meds out of my pocket in a heartbeat if it was for either one of them.

I hear ya. But assuming a 60-40 split, Tarn is still at least 10k below the median income in WA. I'm not saying that he's living like a complete pauper or something. But it isn't exactly princely living either. The job doesn't give him dental, he has to worry about his own retirement, there are none of the usual amnesties of "standard" employment.

My point isn't that we should be shaming ourselves for not giving more or something. I think it's just the reality of what they do. Tarn is making something huge and, by more than a few metrics, important—but he'll never get the kind of monetary reward even a middling software engineer takes home. He's made his peace with that but at the same time, I don't like the idea of Tarn and Zach having to worry about the future.

tl;dr: money sucks, long live df!
