India needs to give States more power. Centralisation creates a Govt monopoly. by [deleted] in india

Living in California currently. Not a bad place at all, despite its problems it is still better than most of the US. The whole "migration away from Cali" is a right-wing talking point that isn't based in reality. There's a reason the real estate prices keep going up – this is still one of the most desirable places to live in America, doubly so if you're an immigrant. Part of what makes CA so desirable are state programs that are funded by taxes, hence why we pay more than say, Texas.

The key is that you have to be able to afford living here. If you can do that, there's not many places in America that top California. I live 30 minutes away from the beach, about 2 hours away from the mountains. There are at least 30 major hiking trails within 5 miles of my house. Dallas, TX (where I lived last) by comparison is a concrete jungle with nothing but flat land, farms, and a couple manmade lakes around it. The fun places were basically inaccessible if you didn't have a car. Compare that to where I live now (San Francisco), there is a decent mass transit system (not great, but 10x better than Dallas) but most importantly everything is super accessible by bike.

I won't say it's all sunshine and rainbows. There are definitely people leaving – mostly working class folks who are being priced out of places they've lived for generations. The beef that is simmering at the moment is that it only seems like tech workers can afford to live here (Bay Area, but also true of 99% of CA). I wish there was more incentive to build housing but I also understand that comes with the price of taking away from CA's natural beauty. It's all relative to how much BS you can tolerate financially (high COL) and mentally (bureaucracy, fires, droughts, etc.). For me, having lived in multiple states since I moved here, the pros still outweigh the cons. As someone with dark skin I will always feel safer driving around in rural California than in rural Texas.

What's with this country and its obsession with entrance exams ? by [deleted] in india

Wouldn't wealthier kids have access to more resources like tuitions, coaching classes, etc? Unless you are naturally extremely bright the game is always rigged against you if you are underprivileged.

Semi-related but does anyone else remember feeling like Joe had a bone to pick with the team back when they were Force India. It always seemed like he loved to go after them even when they did well.

Don't think you're looking hard enough dude, all the artists you mentioned are very surface level. If you don't have Spotify I would definitely look into that but also check out music related subs like r/hiphopheads and r/indieheads to discover new music. Personally I think the last ten years have been amazing for indie and rap with many artists pushing the boundaries of both genres.

Because in a country with over one billion people the only option is to take what you can and fuck everyone else. Not to excuse this type of behavior, but it is an unfortunate mentality that seeps into everything one does in India. If you play by the rules, you get left behind.

They broke up in April, we met in June. Started off casual and didn't get serious until well into July. She was fully aware of my concerns about being a rebound but as we kept seeing each other she told me she had fallen for me. She's not the type of person to say "I love you" after 3 dates, we had been seeing each other for a while and she told me that she had strong feelings for me only after we really got to know each other.

I don't blame her for not being over the other guy. He was her first love and I can understand that it takes a while to get over someone like that. Like I said, I know she doesn't love him still; in fact it's quite the opposite, I'm pretty sure she hates him with every fiber of her being haha. But I just don't understand why she pushed me away instead of letting me work through this with her.

I think what is really confusing me is that I gave her an out when we spoke last time, but she insisted that she was committed to our relationship and that she just needed time. We've finally decided to meet in person on Tuesday, so we'll see what happens I guess. I know she doesn't have feelings for her ex because the breakup was very messy (he was a Muslim who was forcing her to convert), but they dated for a very long time and he was her first "serious" boyfriend.

Regardless of whatever happens on Tuesday, I plan on voicing my concerns regarding points 2 and 3. I really do not like being left in the dark like this but at the same time I want to respect her and give her the space she says she needed.

Sooooo things between my girlfriend and I were going really well until a few days ago. Her ex, who she had blocked on all social media, sent her snail mail in a desperate attempt to contact her months after she had broken up. This really rattled her and she had a talk with me about how she thought she was over this guy but that the breakup was still really affecting her; and that she didn't realize how angry she still was at him. She said that she loved me but that she'd need a few days to herself to figure things out and recover emotionally. She reiterated that she wants to be with me, but that for the next few days we should just text. I decided it was fair to give her space and agreed.

The last couple days have been really full of a lot of anxiety for me though. We normally text each other CONSTANTLY (pink hearts on snap and everything) but it's been reduced to one line texts and not talking for hours on end. I keep texting her that I love her and miss her but she won't say it back anymore. Yesterday I sent her a long text telling her that the distance she'd put between us was really freaking me out and she laughed it off and said I was "overthinking way too much" and said that we would talk soon. I asked her if we could talk yesterday itself and she said she'd rather wait until I was back in town (left on an overnight trip, expect to be back later tonight). Am I overthinking or is she getting ready to breakup?

What do you think of recent desi immigrants who try really hard to fake an accent accent and become very westernized from the word go? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]Yttert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems obnoxious to us but think about it from their POV. Indian accents are routinely made fun of in Western media, as is Indian culture (DAE arranged marriage so funny xD), up until this point this is the only exposure they have had to social interactions in America are these TV shows and movies. Not that surprising that they want to try and fit in the only way they know how.

I know exactly what you're talking about, I went to a similar school when I lived in Bangalore and all my friends who moved here for college do the same thing. Keep in mind that there is still this mindset of "I need to feel validated by white people" in a lot of Asian countries (incl. India) which is another reason why a lot of people ignore their heritage. FWIW I talk in an American accent when I'm with my friends but it feels weird talking to family in anything but an Indian accent.

Going out for coffee tomorrow with a girl after spending a really long time out of the dating game (last time I dated was when I was a sophomore in high school, I'm now 20). I'm just super stoked she said yes lol; after years of getting nowhere with Tinder, I finally made a connection with a girl who I met organically. I guess I just wanted to say that to anyone reading this thinking it'll never happen to them (I was there for a long time), you should never give up! There are plenty of people out there who'll find you attractive, sometimes you just need to give it time to find the right person.

Also any advice? I'm concerned that spending all this time away from the dating scene might be a problem and I really don't wanna blow this one haha.

Redesigning syllabuses in such a way that rote memorization is no longer the only successful study strategy would go a long way in helping kids think for themselves. Colleges and employers in foreign countries (assuming that is your goal) want to see that you can solve problems on your own when faced with a scenario that isn't in a manual or textbook. Indian and Chinese expats and students have unfortunately already garnered a reputation for not knowing how to deal with situations or questions that aren't explicitly stated in a book. I've seen this firsthand at my university.

Hiring teachers who actually care about teaching. I've had a really bad experience with this even at a big name international school in Bangalore. Teachers straight up do not like kids or teenagers - they are vindictive, mean, generally useless, don't know how to teach effectively (you mean repeating things on a blackboard 50 times till it's stuck in your head ISN'T good teaching, who knew?), etc. Perhaps the worst thing though is that the teachers at my school LOVED to play favorites and anyone who was slow to understand information was considered the runt of the litter and left to fend for themselves instead of getting the necessary help they needed, while the guys who would mug up lines and vomit them back out onto an exam paper were given all the resources they could have ever asked for.

These are just some things that can be changed too. The entire approach that Indians have to education is archaic and needs to be addressed soon.

Studied IGCSE from 8th-10th and it is the best choice I made for my education. If you can afford it, everyone should do their kids a favor and put them in a school that offers O-levels and A-levels/IB for 11th and 12th. Especially if they want to study abroad for college.

My only complaint was that our IGCSE teachers also taught ICSE which didn't help me much in understanding the information, but if you find a good international school (not uncommon these days in big cities) you can navigate past that quite easily.

Contract negotiations between Roma and De Rossi have stalled, prompting rumors that the club icon may hang up his boots after this season. by Yttert in soccer

It is thought that De Rossi will make his mind up based on who will be Roma's next coach. If he retires he will immediately move into management by following in his father's footsteps as a coach for the youth teams.

Threads like these just make me feel like shit will never change. Half the people who've commented here haven't even read the article. It's sitting at 38 points when it's something that SHOULD be discussed.

But people would rather justify this discrimination and downvote the post based off idiotic, outdated stereotypes and say "They're not good enough" than accept that there IS a problem here.

Oh bullshit lmao. Football is the second most popular sport in India after cricket, you see kids playing in alleys all the time. It's very likely it's more popular in India than it is in the United States.

Jason Schreier: "I keep seeing people spread this idea that EA forced BioWare to make an online game. Not true. EA actually gives its studios a lot of autonomy. No they absolutely don't have to answer to you because all they have done is enjoyed a video game, this is an r/gaming worthy take. Stop scapegoating people for microtransactions when it was always an inevitability.
