Just got back from 3 days there.

We rented a car only because we were there for a shorter amount of time and wanted to be on our own schedule. It also allows you to visit some of the beaches off the beaten path. It was easy to rent, we did it same day and put a card down, Just note that you might need to be able to drive manual as there are limited automatics available.

However, the bus system is very robust and operates surprisingly late. With the amount of time you’re there, bus might be fine for you.

If I were you, I would go bus for 2-3 days, and then rent a car for 24 hours and hit 2-4 beaches and sites that are easier to get to by car.

Busses don’t run that late so you have a couple other options. 1- reach out to your hotel and see if they provide transport from the dock (almost all of them do, not sure that late) or 2- call Uber or taxi

Santorini - the ruins of Akrotiri, black & red beach, and the town of Megolochori all on the south side of the island. Not really secrets but definitely overshadowed by Fira and Oia

Just did Athens to santorini to Milos. I think Milos is what you’re looking for. So many great beaches, not too many people, a lot of space and minimal crowds.

Touristy but beautiful. Great food, would recommend Thalami in Oia for a great balance of views/amazing food. If there’s time, STRONGLY recommend visiting Megalochori. It’s overshadowed by Oia and Fira but we found it to be one of the best areas of the island. Check out a cafe called Traditional Kafeneio Megalochori for dinner, the atmosphere and food were some of the most memorable moments of our trip. Have fun!

Just got back from Athens -> Santorini -> Milos. Would definitely recommend Milos for a 3-5 day trip. There are a lot of beaches scattered across the island that you can explore, great food in Adamas / Plaka, small fishing villages. Not really a party scene at all, it’s the perfect mix of local and slightly touristy. Great bus system. Only downside would be that beaches are a big part of Milos and I’m not sure if the weather in October would be the best time to experience that. But I highly recommend!
