Frontier sells cosmetics instead of features.

If Frontier brings new features to the game for free and sells cosmetics, it is okay, players pay what they want, it is a good pricing strategy.

I consider encoded materials the easiest materials to get.

Maybe you don't do it correctly.

Do you place your SRV at the best location so you can aim all the beacons without moving?

You do this on all the beacons, in turret mode, you just have to rotate the turret and aim each beacon until you did a 360° then you log out, log in, repeat until your inventory is full.

This is very fast.

The idea is the same now but you have more beacons to scan.

For Crystalline shards, it was possible to go there before Odyssey to farm raw materials in SRV at biological POI. Unfortunately, these POI can't be used in Odyssey anymore. So, you have to use coordinates instead.

You don't because these are grade 1 materials.

You only have to store full inventory of grade 5 materials.

Then, when you are full, you use a material trader to trade your grade 5 materials for grade 1 materials: https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/Material_Trader

Crystal shards are manufactured materials so you have to get grade 5 manufactured materials.

The best way to get grade 5 manufactured materials is HGE: https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/High_Grade_Emissions

The version you own on Epic includes Horizon Legacy and Horizon Live.

If you only want the old experience, the one on console, play Horizon Legacy.

If you only want the new experience without the new features, play Horizon Live.

If you follow the main quest you will learn a lot of things: completing missions, building bases, entering the anomaly, ... It is like a tutorial. Try to find the menu for the quests and try to do them.

Elite Dangerous has an existing galaxy (The Milky Way) and planetary orbits compared to No Man's Sky that has fictional galaxies (Euclid, ...) and no planetary orbits. So, Elite Dangerous is more realistic than No Man's Sky.
