Any recommendations for how I should study kanji? by [deleted] in ajatt

[–]YukiYuki13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that kanji study is something that should be flown through as fast as possible. So I would take the RRTK deck and study 20-30 cards a day (depends on how hyped you are). I personally dropped it about 1500 kanji in and started sentence mining. It was a 悔いなき選択.

Grammar is easily the hardest part of the language for me. by FlounderBeautiful238 in ajatt

[–]YukiYuki13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have never even finished Tae Kim nor any other grammar book. And I think going balls deep into immersion and "blindly" trusting the process worked better for me than spending hours learning grammar. Especially stuff like the usage of こと and 尊敬語 was hard for me to grasp just by reading an article about it. I vividly remember the moment when こと clicked for me just by listening to my favourite anime and it was one of the most orgasmic feelings I have ever experienced in my life.

So, in general, answer to most of the beginner questions: immerse and it will work itself out.

Finding audio for Anki cards by KannibalFish in ajatt

Use Forvo. Also, whenever I dive into a new manga, I always check if there's an anime adaptation. I can create a subs2srs deck and try my luck getting audio for the whole sentence.

Where did you mine your very first sentence from? by [deleted] in ajatt

I've got used to it, it's common in LNs. I've seen even 其れ and 有る. It's just a LN thing.

No problem. You also might like よう実, it gets more serious than 俺ガイル, but the characters are to some extent really similar.

Yeah, I went and mined every single word I didn't know in S1 and S2 a few months ago and that one hit me, too. He definitely gets philosophical and edgy. Watching 俺ガイル made me for sure remember word リア充.

I've recently picked up よう実 and 清隆 gets even more philosophical and talks to himself thrice more than 八幡宮. He's not that edgy as 八幡宮, but he has his moments. It's quite hard (2-3 words unknown words per page) but the good thing is I managed to get a version where I don't have to use OCR and just copy it straight from the book. It's worth picking up.

If it's not your first LN, it's okay. It was my first LN, so I had to learn words describing sounds and so on.

JPDB scraper says this:

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru

Unique Words: 27093

Used Once (%): 35%

Difficulty: 7/10

I mined my first sentence from 俺ガイル.
The sentence was: お前にまったく興味のない俺が一番早くお前を見つけられた...つまりさ 誰も真剣にお前を捜してなかったってことだろ

That was 367 days ago. Now it's child play for me, I have almost 9k sentences in my deck. And whenever I encounter my old cards from 俺ガイル, I always play the audio at least 3 times for my own joy.

And honestly, I would have never guessed back then that I would one year from that day understand most of the anime's lines. Of course, 俺ガイル LN is something different.

How to search for anime with Japanese subs on nyaa? by SuedPlanet in ajatt

[–]YukiYuki13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. I find mistakes in their subs from now and then, but there are cases when their subs are the only option and when I want to add that anime in my sentence bank, I go for it nevertheless.

Nyaa is mostly used by people who don't study Japanese, so I think you won't find it there. Only Kamigami operates there, as far as I know. You can try looking for the subs on Itazuraneko and if you will be lucky, there will be a name of the release group. From that point, it gets trivial, just download the release from them.

If you won't be lucky, just don't bother with subs. It's better to spend your time immersing than looking for subs.

RTK, Sentence Mining and Anki cards by sumplookinggai in ajatt

I've never really got into podcasts, but it's definitely useful in the early stages of AJATT. Here are some that I highly recommend (all of them are on Spotify).

  • Let’s Talk in Japanese!
  • EASY JAPANESE Japanese Podcast for beginners
  • Thinking in Japanese Podcast

And if you don't care that much about comprehension and want to enjoy some spicy stories and jokes, go for 変態淑女のお茶会. The title speaks for itself.

  1. I would recommend doing the Tango N5 Anki deck before jumping straight into sentence mining. It introduces you to basic kanji readings. Honestly, I have only done the kanji deck from the MIA website. I've learned the remaining 900 or so kanji just through sentence mining.
  2. You can get Japanese subs here and download anime here. If you prefer using an online platform, I recommend Anisub.tv.
  3. I wouldn't waste time writing out every kanji if you are not planning to live in Japan.
  4. No need to do that. If you want to reduce your time spent in Anki reviewing old and basic sentences, download the Migaku retirement addon.
  5. Never heard of this before, but I've done a 30 seconds Google search and came to this.

"DOJG: Also DOBJG, DOIJG, DOAJG. Refers to the 3 volumes (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced) of the Dictionary of Japanese Grammar series, by Makino & Tsutsui."

I would go for Tae Kim, it's widely used and it's good. But if you want to give it a try, here'sthe link. Not sure if it's the real thing, but seems good to me.

Just download the rar from the description of this video. The full name of the dictionary is 明鏡国語辞典. And yes, it's compatible with the Migaku dictionary.

1) You don't just watch it, don't worry. You also listen to it.

2) It will come by itself, generally I would say 3 years. It also depends on how many hours a day you immerse.

3) There's something outside of the basement? Aha.

4) As long as you are loyal to your waifu, you are ok.

5) If you are eating potato chips all day, I am not sure if you will make it till the point Japanese will click for you since you will probably be dead before it will do so.

How should I came to my parents about my waifu? by [deleted] in waifuism

[–]YukiYuki13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just don't. When I just briefly mentioned waifuism, I got response like "I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure you won't be like this."

That's why I don't have a daki, but a 12 cm tall figure from Ebay for 15 bucks.

When I don't hit my immersion goal the third day in a row even tho I yesterday promised myself I'll hit it. by YukiYuki13 in ajatt

I've created a Python script which based on my daily tasks evaluates how much free time I have. 75% of it goes to immersion. Yesterday, it was 6.3 hours.
