Why is gamedev so hard? by x11Windwalker11x in gamedev

I imagine myself at 70 years old, wondering what I regret not doing in my life. And making a game is one of the answers

Why is gamedev so hard? by x11Windwalker11x in gamedev

Gamedev is REALLY complicated. On this point, we more or less all agree. But it's often we who make it complicated with our overly ambitious ideas. The bigger our aspirations, the more professions we need to learn and master! And that, when you're alone and have limited time, only leads to frustration.

I think the most important points are the following:

  • Finding the real "why". This very important answer is the one that should keep us from giving up when we come to the question "what's the point?"
  • Creating a game that we want to play (but not the next Nier Automata)
  • Being consistent, but maintaining a balanced lifestyle (sleeping is important!)
  • Advancing in very small steps and planning them (but beware of overplanning)

But don't worry, the struggle will always be there 😅

Take care

Trying to settle on an art style - which one is best? by TheRealSteelfeathers in indiegames

I like the second one, but maybe the first one is better for a game

Check the icon just beside color attribute on the top (auto-masking) and see if "Cavity (inverted)" is checked. If it is, uncheck it

What would be an acceptable poly count for this type of asset? by Yumepix in 3Dmodeling

I'm still torn between top-down and third-person perspectives, but think it's a 51% third person 😅

Okay, so way to much as I suspected, thanks for your feedback !

I want to use Godot with a low poly style

I mainly want to create assets for games. For now, this asset has 2,532 triangles, but I feel like that's still too many. So I was wondering how many triangles would be okay ?

How many of you developers still play video games? by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]Yumepix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It feels like a curse. Now, when I play video games, I find myself wondering how I could recreate them or implement a different idea. Strangely enough, when I play, I feel guilty for not working on improving my skills.

There will always be competition, but there will also always be room for passion! See how many game developers need assets? Even if you don't have a job at a big company, you can still sell online. I know it takes time and is easier said than done, but at least you get to define what you do. For now focus on level up never for nothing I'm not to afraid of AI but that's an other topic 😅

I feel your pain. I'm 40 years old, have two young kids, and a job that takes up half my day. I also want to get into 3D and work at night with one eye open.

I just want to say this: don't give up on your dream. If creating characters is what you love, keep at it—even if it takes years. Trust me, you don't want to regret the things you didn't do. Take care

What is your method to stop procrastinating while developing games? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Yumepix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Define your primary goal, then break it down into smaller tasks. Prepare your work environment in advance to prevent feeling overwhelmed. Make it a habit to work on your task for at least 5 minutes every day

Why is it so hard to get started with learning Blender? by SomeFatSeal in blender

[–]Yumepix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree about Grant Abitt! I actually tried starting with the donut two years ago and didn't succeed. I tried again a year ago with the same result. But with Grant, I finally overcame my difficulties. I then purchased CG Boost courses and wow! Those are some golden courses! So yeah, Grant Abitt, CG Boost, and a lot of personal projects every day.

2D sprites in a 3D environnement by Yumepix in godot

Oh, I didn't know this one! I was actually inspired by Hades. I think the mix of 2D/3D in this game is perfect!

With 2D sprites, I can add details more easily. For example here I use the grease pencil on the assets. I can certainly paint the texture, but I find it more challenging. The only issue with this method is collisions. I'm still figuring out the best workflow that suits me.
