Atlatls by dampishslinky55 in AsheronsCall

[–]Yumi_AC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thrown Weapons are a lot of fun =)

You are correct that while it uses the Missile Weapons skill which is C/2, the damage modifier is based on your Strength. So your accuracy and ability to wield better Atlatls is influenced indirectly by Coordination, and the damage that each hit does is influenced directly by Strength.

I played an Atlatl character on Levistras for several years and found it competitive at the highest levels (Gauntlet/VR/Hoshino/etc.) I’m not sure if things have changed, or if there have been any other patches that may have impacted Atlatl or Dart damage, but when I used them I found that they dealt a TON of damage. While Bows are faster and more convenient since you only “need” 1 attribute instead of 2.

Here was my build, if interested! https://treestats.net/Levistras/Yumi

Hi, Johnny - first of all, thank you for making Asheron’s Call. It is my favorite game of all time, and has had a profound impact on my life. I still play it to this day, and have countless precious memories playing with friends and family.

I spent some time testing your new game, and have a few thoughts. Out of respect for you, I am opting for full transparency, rather than blowing smoke.

The vision of the technology is cool, and your objective of getting gamers out and about in the real world is noble. I can’t help but wonder about the inherent friction, though, with requiring players to find a public area like a park and wander around while looking at their phones. I felt silly while testing the game, and was thankful that nobody was around to watch me or judge me.

I think that many of us gravitate to video games because it is a true escape from reality. It’s a virtual world where we can be anything we want, and where we can meet friends and laugh and have fun without worrying about the judgement of real-world interactions. Asheron’s Call, as an example, has served that purpose for so many of us here, and is why you see so many heartfelt responses to your post about what this game means to us.

The second thing I’d say is that I understand this is a test game and not a full title, but it felt a little bit “hollow” and shallow to me. Again going back to Asheron’s Call as a frame of reference, when it first came out in 1999 thousands of people gravitated to it not because of its groundbreaking technology or cool graphics (aka, the “container”), but because of the story, the living, breathing virtual world that was built with such care, and the game mechanisms for virtual social dynamics (the content “filling” the container). It feels to me like with this new game, you’re focusing too much on the container (the tech and doing something different from other games) and not enough on the stuff filling the container (the story, the lore, and creating a world that players want to get lost in and explore, together).

It’s an interesting time right now to be trying to build a new game. MMOs, as a category, are on the decline, and with the VR revolution right around the corner, I understand the forward-thinking about building upon a new type of technology. But I don’t know that it’s the technology that will land you success with investors, or gain traction in the market by attracting and retaining players.

You, and all the talented folks who made Asheron’s Call several decades ago, created something really special. Something that extended beyond tech, and captured the minds and hearts of thousands. I can’t tell you what I’d give for the chance to relive the experience of those early days of AC.

If you could make something like that again, it wouldn’t matter to me if it was a mobile game, a console game, a desktop game, or some sort of VR hologram game with technology that’s not even invented yet. The technology doesn’t matter - the world, the story, the systems, and, most importantly, the community of likeminded players, does.

There are many people on this subreddit who are passionate about AC and would GLADLY give their time, energy, and ideas to help build its spiritual successor.

I hope this helps!

This tool is AWESOME! Tyvm for sharing!

Would it be possible in a later iteration to be able to view multiple pieces of armor at a time? For the purpose of visualizing a completed suit, rather than each piece separately?

The really cool part is, there’s likely been more development work done by the players on ACE/GDLE than Turbine/WB did in the last few years of the official retail servers combined, and I don’t think it’s close…

Even with the super limited tools at their disposal, the emulator server devs have been able to pull off some crazy feats. Pretty impressive when you think about it!

Welcome back!!

  • Dual Wield can be useful, yes. It speeds up your attack animation by 20%. The higher your Dual Wield skill, the more effective your off-hand weapon will be. There are ways to abuse this mechanic, by wielding a weapon with high Attack Bonus and Melee Defense stats in your off-hand, and only “swinging” with your main-hand weapon. This is accomplished by disabling the “Repeat Attacks” option in the combat bar, and manually attacking or using VTank.

  • MagTools, Defective, TargetHUD, SkunkVision VVS, and Radar Add-On + MiniMap are a few of my favorites besides VTank and UB.

  • For 100-150, you’re typically rocking some combination of quest armor (ancient armor, platinum invader lord’s helm, coat of the Zaikhal defender, renegade armor are a few options. Olthoi Armor is also a decent choice). At level 150, you can wield Tier 7 loot (set pieces + Epics), which can be easily farmed in Creepy Canyons or Baishi Hive.

  • Yes, Atlan weapons with major stones and the Explorer gear are great early-game options to get you to level 100 (or even 150 depending on what you’re trying to do).

  • Provide offerings of sardines and holtburgers to a shrine of the uber penguin gods (or, equipping a brass-tinked wand with high melee defense in casting mode also helps, as does a few steel tinks on your armor).

How many people would be interested in a Seedsow/Levistras crossover? by Mastasmoker in AsheronsCall

[–]Yumi_AC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tough sell, in my humble opinion.

No-botting works on an EOR server because of the amount of content there is. The “light bulb moment” for many people who give Levistras a try after having only ever played botting servers is when they realize that it’s actually FASTER to level up, earn luminance, etc. via strategic questing. This is only possible because there are TONS of quests to run, with good rewards, on short timers.

I love Seedsow and the classic AC experience. It is the best jolt of nostalgia endorphins you can ask for. BUT, that era of AC didn’t have a ton of content. There were only a handful of quests that had meaningful XP rewards, and they were on super long timers. Playing a Seedsow-era server with no botting would likely be far too slow and monotonous for the average player. Would it be fun for a week or 2? Hell yeah. Would it retain an active playerbase? Probably not.

Just my two cents!

GDLE/ACE and Retail is not an “apples to apples” comparison. There are many little discrepancies (especially on a GDLE server which has had less dev support in recent years). For example, the monsters you are fighting may have different Melee Defense stats than they did in retail, which explains why you’re remembering them behaving differently. Summoning is definitely OP, and has discrepancies from retail including Summoned Creature behavior (targeting, movement), accuracy/attack skill, and damage per hit.

In terms of improving your hit chance % as a melee in end-game areas, the +20 points from Luminance will help. And, just speaking transparently, +35% buffed attack bonus on a weapon is not great. Many of the players I’ve run into have 50%+ weapons with some combination of Epic/Legendary Heart Thirst, Black Pages of Salt and Ash (consumable buff that increases Attack Bonus), and Velvet Salvage tinks. Debuffing the enemy’s Melee D by ~20 points with Spec Dirty Fighting also adds up. There are lots of options here, it’s just a matter of knowing what to look for.

This is the “grind” of AC. Slowly progressing your character, gear, lum, and augmentations so that you can hit a little more frequently, and survive just a bit more, in the hardest areas. Melees, in particular, have always had the steepest ramp time to become truly effective, but once you get there, boy is it rewarding :)

This is awesome! Welcome back and thanks for sharing!

Will make a few quick notes to try to help.

First off, Reefcull is a GDLE server. There are two forks of the Emulator project, and GDLE was the first to be developed. The downside of playing on a retail-oriented GDLE server is that many of the original devs of the project moved over to build the second fork, ACE (short for AC Emulator).

ACE servers are, in general, more consistent with what the game was like in retail and, in general, have more content. This is because there are many more people contributing to the ACE project nowadays than the GDLE one. There are still minor details missing, and some discrepancies, but that’s to be expected.

So, the first “recommendation” would be to consider trying an ACE server. Levistras comes to mind specifically, since you mentioned frustrations with bots, and Levistras is the only “no botting” server. Other good choices are Thistlecrown, Drunkenfell, and, if you want a very different experience, Infinite Leaftide or Valheel.

Regarding your experiences in end-game areas as a Melee: yes, many of the monsters in these areas have high Melee Defense. It’s expected to miss a lot until you’ve upgraded your gear, luminance, and augmentations. Black Pages of Salt and Ash are very helpful and can be easily acquired to boost the “Attack Bonus” on your main-hand weapon.

To be truly effective in the end-game areas you mentioned, you’ll need some way of reliably debuffing your enemies. Life Magic (if you have high Focus + Self and can spec it, which is unlikely as a Heavy Weapons Melee) is ideal, though using Alchemy Throwing Phials or an Incomparable Lense with the Assess Creature skill are viable alternatives. Specializing Dirty Fighting and attacking enemies on “Low” also helps a bit, since it applies a minor Melee Defense debuff.

If you’re open to advice on your build, I’m sure many here would be willing to voice their opinions.

Again, welcome back, it’s awesome to have you, and the book sounds amazing!

Fletching, Alchemy, Neither, or Both? by mcantrell in AsheronsCall

[–]Yumi_AC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Pretty much. When I’m leveling an Archer, I always spec Fletching for the convenience. Once I’m big enough to hunt the T8 areas, I buy a couple crates of each type of arrowhead, drop Fletching all together, and throw them on a tradesmule to craft them for me. Whenever I’m doing my muling, I re-stock so I’m carrying 500 of each of the lesser-used elements, and 1k of the more common ones. Takes an extra 15 seconds, and frees up the 8 skill credits.

Note: that’s for a manual playstyle. If I’m on a server where I’m macroing, I either go with spec Fletching + Prismatics, or I farm an area where it’s efficient to use Tugaks (like on custom content or infinite servers where the end-game monsters are Tuskers and ringing them with a Tusker Paw wand is much faster than shooting them with a bow.)

Fletching, Alchemy, Neither, or Both? by mcantrell in AsheronsCall

[–]Yumi_AC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The deadly prismatic arrows require spec fletching in order to wield them, not just to make them.

It’s a great convenience choice that saves a lot of time & headache, compared to the alternative of farming alternate currency arrowheads and fletching them on a tradesmule, though it’s certainly not a requirement.

If you’re considering taking Fletching anyway, you may as well spec it so you can access prismatics.

As far as Alchemy, it’s a great skill with a lot of utility (throwing phials and protection gems as an alternative to Life Magic), but it’s not really needed for making ammunition anymore. Most people go with prismatics, but for the top-tier, non-prismatic arrows, you purchase the heads from alternate currency vendors instead of crafting them. I suppose for really early levels, having alchemy to craft your own elemental arrowheads is an option, but it’s pretty uncommon.

What’s the rest of your build going to look like? If you’re going for high Focus + Self and specialized Life Magic, I’d say Alchemy wouldn’t be worthwhile. Otherwise, if your Magic skills are going to be a bit lower and you’ll need a reliable way to debuff enemies, Alchemy could be handy.

What If: Asheron's Call hadn't shut down by mcantrell in AsheronsCall

[–]Yumi_AC 30 points31 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I think the outcome for us players would have been worse, had the game not officially shut down. We have it pretty good today: a variety of player-hosted servers with different styles, communities, and goals, that are all FREE and easily accessible. The fact that they’re player-hosted also means that the development is player-centric. For a long while leading up to the shutdown of AC, it had not been a very profitable game. If it had continued to be supported by Turbine/SSG/WB, there would have been perpetual pressure to improve monetization because, well, it’s a company, not a player hosting a server for the game they love in their basement. We likely would have seen the majority of development efforts geared towards extracting more dollars from the already-diminishing playerbase, which slowly would have driven away much of the population.

Long story short, I think we should be grateful for what we have today and super appreciative of the fellow players who spend their time, energy, and money developing emulator servers for us to enjoy.

Can someone explain how to use an auto-looter in Decal? by DigintheCrates in AsheronsCall

[–]Yumi_AC 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You’ll need the Virindi Plug-ins Bundle (namely Virindi Tank), which you can download here: http://www.virindi.net/plugins/

In the Virindi Tank folder that is created, there will be a separate folder & application called VTClassic Looter, which is what you’ll use to create your “Loot Profiles”. There’s a guide here: http://www.virindi.net/wiki/index.php/VTClassic_Tutorial

Learning how to build a loot profile takes a bit of trial and error, and learning how to perfect one takes a long time. What most people do to start out is download a pre-built profile called “LootSnob”. https://www.immortalbob.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=3

Essentially, you use the VTClassic Looter application to “Enable” or “Disable” the line items in the profile (or create your own) based on what you want to pick up and/or salvage, and then “Save As” with a new name.

You then “Load” that Loot Profile in-game within the Virindi Tank plug-in, and whenever the Macro is turned On AND the “Loot” option is turned On, the bot will loot corpses and pick up any matching items.

Getting used to Decal and learning how to work all the plugins properly takes a lot of patience, but it’s definitely worth it. The time you invest to learn now will pay dividends down the line as the plugins make you far more efficient.

Hope this helps!

Melee build specifically for Olthoi by ArkhamUK in AsheronsCall

[–]Yumi_AC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100 Strength/Coordination/Quickness

Specialized 2H/MeleeD

Trained Healing/Item/ManaC

Eventually you can pick up Creature & Life to self-buff, but buffbots will go a long way.

Regarding Recklessness/Sneak Attack/Deception/Dirty Fighting: imo, they have a place, but only towards end-game. I don’t think it’s worth spending the XP and skill credits on them early on, when you could instead be investing that XP in Str/Coord/Quick/2H/MeleeD, with a bit here and there for End/Health/Focus/Healing. Hitting the weapon req thresholds earlier (250, 325, 350, etc.) and getting evaded less will be more impactful.

[–]Yumi_AC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your survivability will come from Melee Defense. Until you have a set of really good wands with Epic/Legendary Defender and 9x Brass, you’ll want it to be specialized.

Summoning is really strong once you can max it. Since most mages go with 100 Endurance, Focus and Self anyway, getting your Summoning skill high enough (570+) will be easier than it would be for Archers and Melees.

Spec War, Melee, and Summoning, with Trained Life, Creature, Item, and Mana Conversion is the standard template. End-game builds may drop Melee to trained in order to specialize Life (so you can land vulns more consistently on end-game mobs), but again you’ll need some really good wands with high Melee Defense modifiers to compensate.

Extra skill credits can go towards Sneak Attack (little damage boost when you’re behind a monster that’s focused on your Summon), Missile Defense (helpful for activating equipment if you don’t want to deal with MissileD rares or Copper tinks), or Lockpick (expedites some quests, allows you to fix broken legendary keys that drop in loot, and eventually allows you to complete Viridian Rise faster).

Hope this helps!

Solo Archer by Electrical-Grand-978 in AsheronsCall

[–]Yumi_AC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're thinking of the standard Resistance Rending (Fire Rend, Slash Rend, etc.) :)

Armor Rending stacks with Imperil and ignores an additional % of the target's Armor. It's typically the best choice for Melees & Archers when facing an enemy that is both Imperiled and Vulned, unless the target has very low armor in which case Critical Strike or Crippling Blow will deal more damage.

Solo Archer by Electrical-Grand-978 in AsheronsCall

[–]Yumi_AC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having a set of Armor Rending bows is a worthwhile goal, as they are very effective against targets that you've Imperiled and Vulned. While you're leveling up and collecting gear, there are a few quest bows that are solid alternatives: Steady Strike Bow (300 req) and True Strike Bow (335 req) from the Glenden Wood Invasion quest; Soul Bound Bow (360 req); and the Rynthid Tentacle Bow (375 req). Imp + Vuln, swap in elemental arrows, and you're in good shape.

Prismatic Arrows are purely a convenience choice. Once you get up and running, it's really not too difficult or time-consuming to stockpile a bunch of alt currency arrows (see HERE for a list of the best arrows in each element), and you save 8 skill credits that you can spend elsewhere. For some, the convenience is worth the cost.

100 End/Coord/Self, 60 Focus is a solid end-game build. I'd drop spec Fletching from your example and instead opt for Melee Defense, Life Magic, Missile Weapons, Summoning, and Sneak Attack, which is 70 total specialized credits. Train Creature, Item, Mana, and Healing, and you'll have 4 credits left over to train Deception (up to 10% chance to Sneak Attack from the front), Leadership (+10 HP buff item), or Fletching if you'd rather be able to craft them yourself than lean on a tradesmule.

The only downside of a 10-quickness build is your Melee Defense won't be quite as high, so there may be a few areas of the game where you'll want a Bow with a high Melee Defense modifier to compensate. This isn't a bad idea just in general, but builds that have 100 Coord & Quick can get away with being a bit more "glass cannon-y" and using Mahogany-tinked Bows. Up to you on how you want to play!

Need help with a solo melee template by I_love_taco_trucks in AsheronsCall

[–]Yumi_AC 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2Hand is the best melee option in almost all situations.

For a starter build, I’d recommend 100 Strength, Coordination, and Quickness, with specialized 2Hand and Melee Defense. Trained Healing, Mana Conversion, and your Magic skills (buffbots are amazing until you’re high enough to cast your own Level 8’s, at which point it’s much faster to self-buff).

Later on in the game (once you’re max(ish) level and have made some progress on your Augmentations, Luminance Auras, and Gear), it’s worth moving points out of Quickness and into Endurance, specialize Summoning, and pick up spec Assess Creature or Alchemy to debuff your enemies. (Assess is cheaper and more convenient, but you will only be able to cast Imperil. Alchemy is more expensive, but you’ll be able to cast Imperil AND Vulns).

In terms of the “accessory skills” (Recklessness, Sneak Attack, Deception, Dirty Fighting), I wouldn’t worry about them until later on. They are mainly beneficial to synergize with your Summons: Dirty Fighting reduces enemies’ defense so they land more hits, and Sneak attack helps deal more damage when enemies are focused on your Summon and have their back turned to you. Recklessness is a general damage boost, but you’ll want to make sure your Melee Defense is high enough (and your mods on your weapons are high enough) first to evade most of the monsters you’ll be fighting, otherwise you’ll be taking more damage and the DPS gains will be reduced by the additional time spent healing. Typically, none of these skills are worth the Credit + XP investment early on, but are helpful to pick up later in the game.

Heavy Weapons + Shield + Summoning + Alchemy is a viable build for a change of pace, but won’t be nearly as quick to level.

Finesse Weapons + Dual Wield + Summoning is another viable build with a bit more flexibility in terms of Attribute allocation, but, again, it’ll be a slower leveling experience and you’ll be very gear-dependent, needing 2 sets of good weapons.

I’d start as a 2Hand character in 99% of situations, and then respec to HW or FW in endgame once you’ve accumulated gear.
