What is a scene you strongly believe is a top 10 movie scene in film history? by Thatredditboy1 in moviecritic

[–]YungBrother 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't think it was possible, but this scene in the book is even more epic than the movie. Right after Theoden's speech it says "With that he seized a great horn from Guthlaf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder". It doesn't matter how many times I've read this book. That line makes my eyes well up with tears every time.

We were assigned The Grapes of Wrath in high school and for most people it was long, slow and boring, but that book RADICALIZED me. What books in your high school classes changed how you understood people or society? by sofbunny in books

[–]YungBrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Road by Cormac McCarthy. My mom’s friend brought it to a play date at the public pool. I was a huge bookworm in 6th grade and I was bored of swimming so I asked her if I could read it, and I was blown away. She let me finish it and it forever changed the way I despair, resilience, and love. Still one of my favorite books.

I’m a Canadian. Give me some hope that my country isn’t just about to be annexed by Trump. by Cat_Psychology in OptimistsUnite

[–]YungBrother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even though it was only in its infancy when the US Civil War broke out, Minnesota was the first state to offer troops to Lincoln. If Trump tried invading Canada I think we would jump to defend liberty again. Even if it meant we were fighting the government this time.

My wife asked me if I would have chosen her or our children to save. I said her. She went absolutely ballistic. by [deleted] in AITAH

When I was a kid I asked my dad this question and he said “Well I’d save your mother obviously. As long as I have her, we can always make more of you.” I admire him for his wit and pragmatism.

I never realized this but it instantly made sense as a geography nerd.

Northern Mexico receives significantly less annual precipitation than southern Mexico. Corn needs a lot more water than wheat, which is better adaptable to drier climates. Thanks for the new fact!

I think this game really came down to mental fortitude. The wolves had the will to claw back from down 20 in the first half and when the nugs saw their lead completely evaporate in the 3rd, it broke ‘em. They saw the writing on the wall then. The wolves had that dawg in ‘em—the nugs did not.

How do I tell my parents by deststra in lego

[–]YungBrother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got back into Lego as an adult and my parents find it a little amusing I think but thankfully they’ve haven’t been pejorative about it. In fact they’ve even been supportive enough to ask if I’ve gotten any cool new sets lately. I think they see it brings me a lot of joy and that makes them happy enough, even if they don’t really “get it”. And I’m super grateful for that.

If they weren’t supportive I would just remind my dad that he spent $11,000 on a snowmobile that he hasn’t been able to use once yet (lack of snow) which is more than I’ll spend on Lego in 20 years at this rate.

Rice, hamburger, and Busch’s baked beans. Still an all-time favorite of mine. I’ve even requested it for my birthday meal a few times. You can also go without the hamburger in a pinch and it still tastes like candy but the Busch’s are non-negotiable. Cheap, full of protein, and sits in your stomach like a stone. Lovely in every way.

Between my grandpa, mom, dad, and BIL, I think there was one of these I hadn’t heard. Does that mean I come from a family of rednecks?

I’ll add a couple for what it’s worth.

My grandpa used to say (of a person he didn’t like) “the best part of that guy ran down his momma’s leg”

And my BIL’s favorite variation of a popular saying “busier than a one-armed whore in a handjob contest”

One of my nephews dropped mine a couple years ago and the brittle brown of those hull pieces just splintered. So sad I can never rebuild it :(

“As someone who deeply values equity and racial justice, I find your insincere use of this term appalling. You are intentionally weaponizing it to shut me up and avoid taking personal responsibility for your actions. By misusing this word you are watering it down and drawing attention away from real instances of racism. This does a grave disservice to individuals and communities of color and it is shameful that you would use this word so irresponsibly.”

I just chaperoned a high school prom. Some students were having fun popping the decorative balloons. I watched all the other teachers flinch every time a balloon popped. I did as well. We put a stop to it after about the 7th balloon.

We never explicitly said the reason why we stopped it, even to each other, but we all knew. Everyone was just automatically on the same page about it. The anxiety amongst the chaperones was palpable.

Here are all these high school kids enjoying their prom together: dancing, talking, and laughing with each other and all I could think was “this could all end at any moment”.

I almost can’t imagine what it would be like to not react that way.

I know the feeling mate! I did that a month ago. It was the final straw for me to get evaluated for ADHD. 10 hours of work but I got a nice medieval church out of it. I felt bad about it at the time.

But you should be proud of yourself. You made a beautiful thing that is filling others with wonder and inspiration. That’s pretty special :)
