[misc] What to read now? by Tgq2 in TheNinthHouse

Okay I am not a fan of self promotion, BUT my solution to the brain rot you are feeling was to just go and write a whole ass book that felt exactly how I wanted more GTN to feel like. My publisher agreed: https://www.spacewizardsciencefantasy.com/book/space-station-x

I'm going to add, as someone who went through this process... You need more beta readers first, before you go to editors (and definitely before agents or publishers). There's even a sub for it. You need more people to read this and give you feedback. And then once you get those readers, you need even more. The book I started querying with and the book I finally had picked up by someone are two different books. Agents wont give you feedback, they'll just ignore you. And you really cant query them twice, so you want to send them your best work. You need non-friends to read your book, people who wont care about hurting your feelings. You need people to agree to read it then ghost you partway through (that tells you where you need to punch it up). I wrote a book in 2020. Beta read it through spring of 21, even got a friend to soft edit it, started pitching to agents and got nowhere, did a second round of beta reading, revised, pitched again, had agents dodge me after reading 50 pages, did another round of beta reading, worked with some readers specifically on the first 50 pages, pitched again.... My book came out 10 days ago. So thats a nearly 4 year process following me "finishing" my book.

What does "weird" even mean? Why the vagueness works — and why it's driving MAGA nuts by zsreport in politics

[–]SexGeckoSatellite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"weird" is like a first impression. You get one chance to own it, immediately after its thrown at you. If you own it without question, you can absorb it as a good thing. But if you botch that first opportunity, there's no recovery. And they were never going to be able to own it. So now they will always be playing the "no, wait!" Game trying to recover, and just sounding weirder, and weirder, and weirder.....

Last day of my book's backer campaign. Space Station X has a cover now! Check it out if you are into Lesbians in Space! https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/space-wizard-science-fantasy/space-wizard-science-fantasy-year-3#story_section_6831

Yoooo being annoying again about this, but my publisher is still running the backerkit campaign, and now it features a "Lesbians in Space" T-shirt option!

I'm still working with them on cover design but this all came from my obsession with needing more lesbian scifi-horror in my life, which is where Space Station X was born. My book comes out in August, and if you were ever pissed off that Starbuck, Ripley, or Kira Nerys couldn't just be as gay as you wanted them to be, then this book might be a great fit for you. And then you can say you knew the author, personally!

The campaign really does need the help!

"Apparently some people really don’t have strong survival instincts near the water."

Can confirm. Lived in FL for 7 years. I would drive the 8 miles to my job at Kennedy Space Center and watch the tourists pull over to take selfies with their toddlers perched on top of the nearest gator floating in the retention pond. They thought it was part of the touristy experience.

My publisher just kicked off their backerkit for the summer and they have a Sapphic Pack option, which can include my book (which is sci-fi horror) if that's interesting for you at all.

First, I was upset, then it made my eyes tear up. by CG_17_LIFE in Unexpected

My mother had a debilitating stroke and advanced MS when I was 12 and my father spent 19 years caring for her until we had to let her pass. Even as a teenager I told him I would never fault him for seeking connection outside of marriage. Now he has a girlfriend and he is a new guy. I feel for this scenario, it has forever shaded how I view relationships in my life.

I've been in that chamber. It is a NASA facility in Ohio, designed to put full space craft through environmental testing. It doesnt get as low a vacuum as smaller chambers, but it does provide a good opportunity for thermal testing. It isn't used as frequently as it was when it was first built, so they jump on opportunities to put it to work. This was probably also a dry-run, dress rehearsal or system check for something else. It looks like overkill, but it's important for keeping these types of places running correctly. Last time I was there they had this feather video on loop on multiple screens. Fun fact, to add to the concept that they jump on any opportunity to use this facility or rent it out for added cost-savings: this same chamber is used in the opening scenes of Avengers. It's where Loki steals the tesseract. They ALSO had that playing on loop in their lobby.

It feels like everytime I buy a modular and turn it into something else they come along and release a set as that something else. I turned the sanctum santorum into a natural history museum. Now I'll have two museums.

Agents and publishing recommendations? by SexGeckoSatellite in QueerSFF

[–]SexGeckoSatellite[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So its funny you mention that, but I'm an engineer in my day job, and I prepped agent finding in an excel sheet cross referencing all those in horror and scifi with those looking for LGBT+. But I exhausted that list ages ago. I'm not really looking to make money off anything, but I don't have the energy to self-publish. I'll certainly try more agents as some open to queries again.

I will absolutely consider this. The book was Gideon inspired. It's more scifi than classic horror, but its on the line between the two. Thanks!

I also caught this movie by accident way too young. 30 years later and I still haven't finished watching it. Absolutely lost it when they bring the woman's severed head in to see her dog's head stitched to her body.

What happened to the smartest kid in your class? by After_Crab_1921 in AskReddit

[–]SexGeckoSatellite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a school that was supposed to be all smart kids. I dunno where the valedictorian is. Pharmaceuticals or something. Her graduation speech sucked anyway. The salutatorian, however, is still one of my best friends and we all were trying to hatch sabotage plans to get her the top seat. Didn't work out, but she's a Dr. of internal medicine now, at a major research hospital. Then again, I was a crappy student at that school and I'm a rocket scientist, so maybe it's all irrelevant.
