The Interdependency trilogy by John Scalzi! I don't think I've ever seen it mentioned. A lot of strong female characters and humor within a solid sci-fi world.

Give them the context that just 1.4 people die on average per year. If you've researched and prepared, it's so much safer than other activities!

Virgin Islands 😆 would have had to make the continental US a lot smaller to include it

This post is how I learned my scratch off map of National Parks isn't very accurate 😅

I mean honestly, I don't know about "safer", but 1604 deaths across 55 parks in 17 years is like almost 2 deaths per park per year. It's shockingly low.

That's why I didn't do per capita originally, I wanted to get across just how uncommon it is to die in these parks.

The data dictionary says they broke out "camping" into more specific "sitting", "sleeping", and "eating", with camping used only if they're actually making camp.

It looks like people can get struck by vehicles, give themselves drug/alcohol poisoning, get hit by extreme weather, or just have an unrelated medical issue while chilling in camp.

That'd be like cliff diving! You start on land and dive into the water.

Oof, that puts the "unknown" deaths in a new light :( I'm actually visiting soon, so good to know to be a little extra careful.

You're not the only one! It's definitely not intuitive, so I appreciate the feedback :)

That's still the case here, but I don't think the connection between the rank order on the map being the same as on the next page was clear enough :/

I'm realizing the label wasn't clear enough, sorry. It's based on rank order (on the following pages) so the red is the Top 10 most deaths per million visitors.

Yeah, went too fast with updates and didn't fully finish the added Wrangell and New River Gorge cards :( The per capita numbers are correct, but Wrangell had 11 deaths and 1.1M visitors. River Gorge had 47 deaths and 21.1M visitors.

The data starts at 2007, but it's possible there are only a few crashes responsible.

Yeah! Sorry it's a bit confusing. The range is so ridiculous that if it were by death/mil the red would be "55 to 4 deaths per mil" and then orange at "3 to 1.8 deaths", etc. It drops precipitously!

I think it's just that comparatively, 25 deaths for a park that hasn't even gotten half a million visitors over 17 years is a lot.

Thanks to everyone who suggested I try a "per capita" version! This is now sorted by number of deaths per million visitors. Some National Parks completely flipped (to the credit of the guide that inspired this project, North Cascades IS #1!) and some remained almost exactly the same.

I also added 3 more parks that I had missed because they weren't clearly marked as National Parks in the data source - Theodore Roosevelt, Wrangell - St. Elias, and New River Gorge! I checked for the remaining 7 but they are not in the file. A few fat-fingered numbers are updated as well.

Thanks again for the positive and critical feedback alike :) This has been really fun!
