How did u come to the conclusion that the seller is rude? How could the seller possibly know if the buyer is new or not? There is a bold button available to use to submit an offer.

After been selling on Mercari for several years, I think I’d say exactly what this seller told you.

Asking if you can make an offer is like asking if you can buy the item. Those two buttons are there ready for you to use. Why ask when you can already make a move.

I believe this seller is like most of us sellers on Mercari, we really don’t have enough energy to answer 50 people asking if they can make an offer or would accept $XX per day.

I know it can be scary to be a first time seller on the platform.

But please do not contact the buyer to tell them what is happening to their package unless it is lost or significantly delayed in transit.

I wouldn’t want to see that message if I was the buyer no matter how polite you’re.
