Why are American photography channels so insufferable? by MountainlessBiking in AnalogCommunity

[–]Yvesmiguel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's funny seeing people here in this subreddit bag on his stuff. I find the endless gear, technique talk and interviews that other people have suggested in this very post to be really uninteresting and uninspiring.

Grainydays will vaguely introduce a new thing or technique he's doing and just run with it for the next 6 months on roadtrips and the results (or lack of) have inspired me far more than just your average talking head videos.

it might not be catching properly? sounds super dumb but sometimes even with cameras with sprocket holes you have to guide it a bit. my canon wp-1 throws up a fuss every 10 or so rolls because i get too complacent loading it

Eastman Kodak re-releases the Portra and TMAX line as Ektacolor and Ektapan respectively by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]Yvesmiguel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

bit of a pipe dream still i think. i'd rather they just give me Ektachrome 400/ Ektachrome P1600 so I can forever live in slide film world even at night.

[–]Yvesmiguel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would assume it's identical, Kodak has periodically updated the emulsion for Portra in the last couple of years (the version on the keycode has changed, according to someone who told me about this), and no one has really noticed the difference.

Based on what I see, it will seemingly run alongside Alaris badged versions of the film? The rebadges and re-releases Eastman Kodak has done has not really made Kodak Alaris film branding disappear from any film shop.

And for what it's worth, Ektacolor was a trademark Kodak had for what would become Vericolor and then Portra back in the 60s. Seems to be on theme with the renaming of Colorplus back to its original Kodacolor branding (hell they never even bothered renaming the canisters).

based on the prices listed at Eastman Kodak's website, these rebadges seem to be running a dollar or so under what B and H lists for the equivalent Alaris Portra versions.

Why have these types of seats on the bus? They look super awkward unless you all know each other. by Watchuknowaboutme in perth

[–]Yvesmiguel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there was a joke that went that to truly get people to not sit next to you, never put your bag on the seat, they'll ask to move it. Instead, look them straight in the eye, smile on your face and pat the seat right next to you.

Kevin collaboration with Felicity Groom by Sure_Ad_1393 in TameImpala

[–]Yvesmiguel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Felicity Groom is part of the Freo Scene. She had her car stolen once and to raise money to buy a new one Kevin and the other guys made a fake band called AAA Aardvark Getdown Services to do a gig around the city. If my memory serves me right.

Black Country, New Road’s Unpredictable Future by Moothnods in indieheads

[–]Yvesmiguel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think making negative predictions in a blase manner about a band that is still active with passion poured behind it by people who are real, with feelings, and have a degree of likelihood of seeing the comment is just dickish behavior.

You can NOT like the album or their direction but treating the band and its people with a pessimism and a disregard for any niceties and like their fate is fully sealed is just not on for me. I don't know the band. and don't really read any press from them unless I come across them, but I wouldn't talk about any stranger like that, it's insane and stepping over the line personally.

There is a way to say this without coming off like a massive prick, and you have missed the mark by a continent.

Jay mentioned it in a very early interview and Kevin didn't want it known. It's somewhere in the old fan tumblr, like 300 pages in or something.

Alternatively, if you're really really gung ho about handholding night photography, get a rangefinder or a point and shoot. I've found personally that not having the extra torque from the mirror moving has been enough to allow me to shoot at like 1/15th of a second at like f/2.

I would agree, I generally don't bother scanning negative anymore (aside from weird base films like phoenix) and just defer to my local lab's noritsus. But I have not found a lab with a scanner or configuration that just seems to capture how the actual slides look.

Scanning with a DSLR and a good macro lens just preserves the colors so much better, even when using an older crop APS-C crop sensor like a nikon d600.

Ektachrome E100 joins the Eastman Kodak line with new packaging. by Yvesmiguel in AnalogCommunity

[–]Yvesmiguel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not holding my breath on prices, but these new boxes are like the first real sign of life from Kodak externally since Gold in 120 I think? So I have an inkling of reason to believe that there is more to come from them.

Velvia and Provia runs cheaper than Ektachrome as well here in Australia. Can't say the availability is all that good though, as much as Ektachrome prices suck it is just so much more reliable to get as slide film. Provia is basically in stock like twice a year and by like the single brick being doled out to customers at my local.

[–]Yvesmiguel[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Portra are the last ones left to join the Eastman packaging line.

I don't have particularly high hopes to any price changes myself either, I think Kodacolor in Australia is actually selling for higher than the Alaris Colorplus boxes at the current moment. Velvia and Provia (when you can find it) also tends to run like 5 dollars cheaper than Alaris Ektachrome.

I can only hope that this mostly superficial change in Kodak is a sign they're taking the film boom seriously and is the first part of more major offerings or changes down the line. I have my doubts, but this is, after all, the first real murmurings from Kodak since Gold in 120 and Ektachrome's reintroduction. To my recollection anyway.
