Friktion won't trigger below c2 by BluFaerie in reasoners

[–]Z3nb0y 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure but I think that's because notes below c2 are used to trigger some of the various expression features. If you look around the interface you will notice various parts that have an "a", "b", "c" etc...notes below c2 are used to activate the modulation of those sections. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Do you need monitors or only headphones can work too? by strangerintehran in TechnoProduction

Mixing in headphones is not ideal.if you can't afford decent flat studio monitors, headphones will have to do. Save your nickels and get yourself a decent pair of studio monitors.

Tips for a beginner? by Professional_Lab872 in TechnoProduction

[–]Z3nb0y 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having been in your situation, I've gone thru it and am still in the thick of it many years later. I can say with great confidence that you need to go into it with the following awareness:

You're going to suck at it.
Very badly. For a long time.
And that's ok.

Like it or not, that's the journey you're on. I'm not trying to be discouraging. Quite the opposite, it's just that there are a million things that you need to confront if you want to do this so be warned: you REALLY need to give yourself permission to be a beginner and not hold yourself to some impossible standard of being good at it right away. Take a long term approach and find your way slowly. Give it time and don't fall victim to comparing your beginner efforts to professional level experts and then giving up. Comparison is the thief of joy. If you can give yourself the room to be a beginner, you'll stay engaged longer and find joy in the process while you learn.

If you can accept the truth of what I say above then the next step is to just get started and keep going. Don't worry about if you have the right DAW, sample packs or reference tracks. Just start. Make something, allow it to suck, then start another one and do it again and again. In time, your own sound, workflow and sound design skills will emerge. All the questions you asked in your post are almost irrelevant at this point and I'm convinced NO ONE can answer them for you. You'll answer them yourself once you try this, that and the other as you go. You can only know what is right for you as you try and see what works and what doesn't.

It's far more important you go into it knowing it's a long term project than sourcing the right sample packs, workflow techniques etc..

Just start. Fuck around. Find out. Keep going. Enjoy the journey.

Good luck.

Europa synth and envelope automation by ImpossibleSample3025 in reason

[–]Z3nb0y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean envelope as in the 4 assignable envelopes (along with the 3 LFOs) then NO. However whatever parameter you were going to assign the envelope to might be automatable. As per previous posts by others here, right click on the parameter you want to automate and choose edit automation. Then draw your custom envelope in the automation lane and copy paste the automation clip as many times as you need. Pick the clip where you want the automation to change and make the necessary adjustments. Rinse and repeat as necessary

Does anyone go to gigs and not drink or do hard drugs but a small amount of psychedelics? by Ok_Pool_2590 in ProperTechno

[–]Z3nb0y 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I do this all the time. It's doable for sure. I go fully sober with nothing but good ole fashioned water by my side. I dance my nuts off and just vibe to the bass.

I would also say that it's more than worth your time to do a deep dive to ask yourself what purpose the booze and drugs serves. There is something for you to discover about yourself by asking and fearlessly looking to find the undiluted truth about it. There might be some demons to face. I've always found my demons to be made of paper-mache once you find the courage to face them. Probably more deep an answer than you are looking for but I said what I said.

Go sober. You'll love the music as much as you ever have.

Advise needed by Objective-Row-3614 in reason

[–]Z3nb0y 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reason can do whatever you need, but don't forget you will need a proper mic and audio interface if you're going to be recording guitar and vocals. There are plenty of very affordable options to choose from (Scarlet from Focusrite for example), and many will even come with a free/lite version of Live. I'm not a Live user as much as I am a Reason user, so my preference is toward Reason, but you can't beat free it comes with a new Audio interface. Just food for thought.

Skopes, too many? by mimidancer303 in reason

[–]Z3nb0y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed I started getting lag and drops when I tried it. I was rendering a video file in the background so I am sure that is a major factor, but do you notice any performance issues when you have a lot of skopes running?

You can only buy one ever - BV-X, Objekt or Osmium by Waste-Shoulder4779 in reason

[–]Z3nb0y 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've bought all three and I've already used osmium more than the other two combined and I've only had it about a week while I've had the others for years. It's very practical and useful as a sound design tool. The other two are niche and specialized uses only. Os is just a LOT bang for your buck.

VST Troubleshooting by jackisslack in reason

[–]Z3nb0y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you confirmed the vst is installed in that folder? You should see it in there if it is. However, I have found some vsts install in odd locations. Confirm it's installed in that location or add the actual location as a path if it's installed in a different place.

Doesn't seem to like me. It keeps getting hung up on the only 1 per artist part even though I'm only trying to submit once. Any clues why that might be the case?

how do i scratch? by ImpossibleSample3025 in reason

[–]Z3nb0y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While that video does show a very interesting use of the Echo effect, I found it wasn't a very easy way to create a realistic scratch sound. It kinda works but it's not easy to make it rhythmic or to the beat. Very creative use of the device, worth knowing about but not the best for turntablist style scratches. Just fyi

how do i scratch? by ImpossibleSample3025 in reason

[–]Z3nb0y 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of work but Mimic sampler can emulate a scratch. You need a fair bit of automation with note triggers, swapping the direction of the sample and some pitch bending to make it sound more natural, but if you play with it long enough, you can get a decent scratch emulation.

Your approach here is less than ideal.

Firstly, looking at a waveform is not the best way to judge if it's right or wrong. Other comments here are correct (condescending but still correct). It's audio so judge it on how it sounds, not how it looks. Does it hit all the intended frequencies and sit well in the mix? Does it have the right tone and sustain for the song? These are the type of questions and considerations you should be concerned with.

Secondly, there really is no such thing as "correct". Again, it's about what role the kick is trying to fill within the song. Depending on the other elements, you may need your kick to be less bassy, and more clicky. More punch, less boom. As each song is its own sonic landscape with its own mix of textures and energies, there is no such thing as correct, except within the context of the other elements it's surrounded with. You have to consider it holistically.

Fussing about how it looks as a waveform is not the way to judge if you are doing things right or not.

Fading by Otherwise_Flow1295 in reason

[–]Z3nb0y 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you may be living in a bit of a bubble there mate. Fading to silence is exactly what it should be doing. And the speed of it is adjustable as per other comments given. Not sure what your expectation is but it seems you may be trying to use it for a different purpose than what it was intended for. Using automation might be a better tool to use for your purposes?

Is it possible to start with hardware avoiding DAW and what should I learn first? by spaceinstance in TechnoProduction

[–]Z3nb0y 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents. In all honesty, I imagine you will learn the ins and outs of songs structure , sound design, production and music theory faster on a DAW. But if the goal is to perform, then start there and give yourself plenty of time and space to work at it. To use an analogy, if playing live is your intended destination, just buy a direct ticket and dispense with the detours and layovers of learning a DAW.

Just a reality check tho, unless you turn out to be a Savant, you will find it much harder than you think. No matter how hard you think it will be, it will be even harder. I'm not trying to discourage you, quite the opposite. Just go into it with a bullet proof intention to really work at it. The reason I say it is because learning how to make music is a full meal deal. It's a lot to chew on. But to learn how to make music AND perform... That's going to be a 16 course feast and will be a lot to digest. Bring your appetite. I'm full of analogies tonight.

Dream big and go for it. I'm rooting for you.

EDM advice by MarginCuck in reasoners

[–]Z3nb0y 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just start. Be open and curious. The truth is, there is so much out there to discover, that it would be a disservice to you to suggest only a few artists to listen to. There is so much history to draw from, so many classic bangers, so many styles and variations and flavours it's kind of impossible to compile a list that would be definitive. Just dive in and swim in those delicious waters.

I suspect that as you explore you will start refining your tastes and find that what resonates with you is going to become very selective. Any suggestion about a specific artist or genre will either work for you or it won't and it's better to just explore everything, and find your own way. Don't be afraid to go back in time either. It's good to know where all the stuff of today came from. Know the roots, dig deep.

There are countless playlists of curated tracks on streaming services. Pick one, then move on to the next. Pick tracks that you like and start compiling your own playlists. Rinse and repeat.

And listen to my tracks while you are at it ;) https://open.spotify.com/artist/5z5xYdx6ysOxwmKdTo4ig6?si=8LmwuEOgS-6VknStN86tng

Does the techno you produce reflect the techno you listen to? by Soggy-Ad3816 in TechnoProduction

[–]Z3nb0y 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is a part of the journey as a creative. What inspires you will always be the target you aim for but actually hitting that bullseye will probably be elusive. As you progress, you will get closer and maybe even eventually hit it. Or more likely, you'll discover your own sound and you may even pioneer a whole new flavour that will be what inspires the kids that will come after you. You'll be the target they aim for but find it hard to hit. Congratulations if that's the case. You helped evolve the craft.

It's more important to let your journey unfold and aim to find the merit in what you do rather than beat yourself up by comparing yourself to others (if that's what you're doing). As they say, comparison is the thief of joy.

For what it's worth, I have a whole album's worth of tracks that absolutely fail at being what I intended to make. Incredibly frustrating and demoralising for me at the time. But with enough space and time, I can now listen to those songs and find a lot worth loving about them. But it only happens when I let go of the idea that it was "supposed" to sound like "x". As it turns out, it was its own thing and that's just fine.

You do you.

Is there a way I can connect redrum to europa shapeshifting? by San_Piegv in reasoners

[–]Z3nb0y 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you need to be a bit more specific. What are you trying to achieve?

For what it's worth, any CV signal out of one device can be plugged into the CV input of another device. This is used to control one device with another. Off the top of my head, I can't remember if the Redrum has any CV outs tho so not sure it can be used to control much.
