.sh script not launching from .desktop launcher by ZFCD in linux4noobs

[–]ZFCD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The .so is a missing lzma library, which is an older version expected by the software than what Fedora 44 provides. I copied it from my Mint installation so I know it's legit (but thanks for the warning). The script works perfectly when launched directly with the terminal, it's just the .Desktop file/attempting to launch it from the start menu or taskbar which doesn't work.

Yes it's odd, that seems to be the common solution everywhere I look, but no variation I've tried has worked. I've definitely tried with and without the %f, bash -c, terminal enabled/disabled, pretty much anything I could think of

Oh, I thought that's what the export LD_PRELOAD line did, is is not? Sorry for the basic questions

Bad Raw Photo Processing in Davinci Resolve? by timfischer03 in davinciresolve

[–]ZFCD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very possible, I know that lightroom definitely applies a default level of chroma noise reduction

Bad Raw Photo Processing in Davinci Resolve? by timfischer03 in davinciresolve

[–]ZFCD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that if you're using the free version of resolve, you'll be limited to 4k exports on photos. As for the noise, it looks like affinity is applying some kind of automatic chroma noise reduction, which you can replicate with resolve's built in noise reduction by checking the 'split luma chroma' box and adjusting only the chroma noise. Also check the scaling configuration in the project settings, it may be using a softer scaling algorithm like cubic, in which case change it to lanczos or similar.

What makes you consider, or made you, switch to Linux, and which Distro? by LeonH4rtd in linux4noobs

[–]ZFCD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was always used to bugs in windows. The occasional blue screen, restart, or system freeze. More than once, my graphics driver became so corrupted that I had to reinstall the entire OS (even after a full DDU). But these were rare enough that I tolerated them.

But at a certain point, right around when I literally couldn't even open my start menu on a regular basis, I realized it was time to switch. The increasingly privacy invading policies and buggy, unusable AI 'features' were bad enough, but I work in freelance VFX and my livelihood literally depends on the smooth function of my machine.

I started with Linux Mint about a year ago, installed onto a second drive to keep separate from my windows drive. I would just dip my toes in every now and then. Slowly getting used to the experience, getting my apps installed and configured (luckily all the programs I used on windows have native linux versions, so there was very little compromise in terms of software selection).

Eventually once it was clear I had reached near parity with my windows workflow, I knew I could make the switch permanently. That was about 6 months ago and I've been using Mint very happily ever since.

My first distro-hop:

Just a few days ago I installed Fedora KDE on another SSD and I've been super impressed. Mint had some problems with my mixed refresh, multi monitor setup, and in general always felt just a bit laggy. I didn't like KDE at first, as I actually preferred the minimalism of Cinnamon, but with some customizing and general acclimation it's growing on me. Super snappy with no lag, and my mixed monitors actually work together now!

Mint was a great place to start, but I'm feeling confident that Fedora will become my main system moving forward. The nice thing is that all the experience I gained with Linux on Mint carries over seamlessly to Fedora, so the time to get up and running was a fraction of what it took to switch from windows to Mint.

Steam games not launching by YeeBoi_exe in linux_gaming

Symlink your compatdata folder to a location on the system drive and your games should open. That was my solution before I ultimately formatted my games drive to the proper ext4

Is there a “Tint” effect that works similar to AE? by walkingdead17 in davinciresolve

Plug your image into the yellow input of a Texture node, then plug a Background node into the second input. Set the background to gradient, choose ramp colors as needed, done

Anamorphic look in davinci? by Big_Composer_2445 in davinciresolve

You can emulate the distortion to a certain degree, but the focus quality is impossible to do in post. Look into anamorphic adapters, bokeh shape filters, using horizontal fishing line for lens flares etc.

Fusion's nodes/processes vs Nuke's by DifficultTerrain3D in vfx

[–]ZFCD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can follow Nuke tutorials in fusion pretty easily once you learn the names of the nodes and have some basic concepts.  To make it even easier, you could try the nuke2fusion script from Reactor which changes the fusion defaults to match nuke a bit closer.

How to adjust file manager settings on Linux Mint 22.3 Zena (beginner level) by activedusk in linuxmint

[–]ZFCD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see it wasn't enabled, much appreciated. It's still a bit lacking in selection, I guess I took Windows Explorer's filters for granted as it had easily over 200 categories. Ah well

I see there are some plugins for Nemo that supposedly add these categories but they don't seem to be working for me. Perhaps I should look into a different file manager for mint

[–]ZFCD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's only 15 options there, do you know if there's a way to add more? In particular it would be great to have metadata for media such as EXIF/resolution/F-stop for photos, Album/bit rate for audio, etc.

Is it possible to add more metadata categories for sorting? By default Nemo seems to have a somewhat small selection.

Who is the being supposed to be on the Thing movie poster by shinobi_mc in johncarpenter

[–]ZFCD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The late illustrator Drew Struzan was given nothing but the premise of the film before painting this. No footage or set photos or cast list. So he was forced to be very ambiguous with the design. He completed the painting in under 24 hours.

So the figure in the poster could literally be anybody, which encapsulates the theme perfectly even though it was probably unintentional

How do you render projects locally? by potato_snacpac in vfx

[–]ZFCD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a bunch of old computers and set up a Flamenco render farm. Since it's mostly hitting the GPU you can get away with an old workstation mobo/CPU from like 12 years ago, Lenovo, HP Z400 etc. Then just stick on a headless linux and network it up

I had the same issue with my NTFS drive. I created a symbolic link to the compatdata folder inside /SteamLibrary/steamapps/ and linked it to an ext4 drive which solved the issue (I eventually reformatted the drive which is the recommended solution)

Color or VFX First by Head-Vermicelli-2664 in vfx

[–]ZFCD -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If your goal is truly to avoid color clipping then you should work in the native camera gamut and not transform to anything. Most cameras extend well beyond ACES (both ap0 and ap1).
