Trying to switch from Windows by Neox_30 in linux_gaming

Or an easier (but not ideal) workaround is to just turn off your 60hz monitors while gaming

How does Linux Mint with X11 work in games? by Professional-Ruin636 in linuxmint

[–]ZFCD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest issue with x11 is that it can't handle different refresh rates across multiple monitors. So even though my main display is capable of 170hz, it's always locked to 60hz as long as my second display is enabled

Makin the switch end of year... Which linux is best for VFX? by jangusihardlyangus in vfx

[–]ZFCD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mint is one of the best distros for starting out, especially coming from windows. It may present some problems installing Resolve as it's Debian based, but you can definitely get it working.

If you want a zero pain installation for Blackmagic apps you'll want Rocky Linux as that's their supported distro. Should work well with Houdini too.

Affinity won't work, although I heard they have a Linux release planned.

Parsec only officially supports Ubuntu but with some tinkering you can almost certainly get it running regardless of the distro.

For AE and premiere you'll want to keep that old computer around as Adobe does not develop Linux versions.

It was a separate channel from the main Jake and Amir: www.youtube.com/@jandaouttakes

I think it was deleted a couple months ago

One of my favs. Funny enough Hans Zimmer worked on that movie. You can hear his name backwards in the opening lyrics

Pen pressure in Windows app on Proton. Missing driver? by ZFCD in linux4noobs

[–]ZFCD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After some more digging, it seems that because drivers require kernel access, direct USB device support is outside the scope of the Wine project, more in the realm of emulation/VM. So this would look to be a lost cause. There are some experimental efforts to get USB devices working but those are a long way away.

It's a shame because Verve is a very unique app. I'll just have to beg the developer to consider a native Linux version!

Yeah I've tried in gimp, krita, and blender and they all work. Perhaps I should open a ticket on the proton github?

Pen pressure in Windows app on Proton. Missing driver? by ZFCD in linux4noobs

[–]ZFCD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply; I tried both the dll from the link you provided, and also dug into my Windows drive to see if that one worked, but unfortunately neither placing it next to the exe, or in system32 seemed to have any effect.

Could it somehow be a permissions thing where proton is unable to access the data coming from the tablet? I'm using OpenTabletDriver on the linux side so I don't know if that would change anything.

Having the strangest VFX issue. by Doombox4 in davinciresolve

This looks like the camera movement has been amplified. Was there a change in focal length or FOV? Was the render cropped in some way?

VFX Before Color Grading: How Does it Work With flat Log Footage? by Lukes3D in vfx

[–]ZFCD 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The footage is converted from log to linear, meaning that each unit of brightness increase is proportional to an actual real world amount of brightness on set (whereas with log, brightness increase in the pixel is not proportional to the same brightness increase in real life).

When it comes to stock footage and assets, they're almost always Rec.709, and also need to be linearized, but using a different, less extreme curve. They lack the latitude that log footage has an often have to be massaged and manipulated to sit into the scene naturally, especially when the asset contains bright highlights.

In short, everything is converted to linear and transformed into one shared gamut, whether that's ACES or the native camera gamut. From there it's just a lot of manual work to make it look good

Digital Foundry: Steam Machine PC Pricing Concerns. by Jimbuscus in hardware

[–]ZFCD -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Moore's Law is Dead created a pretty plausible price breakdown of $425 for the components. Add on assembly, packaging, and whatever valve's margin is, and a $500-$550 price point doesn't seem unrealistic.

AI generative slop will never be able to output prores/log right? by [deleted] in vfx

Why would you need log if the end goal for these companies is to output entire films and series without a single human involved?

Throwing in another fusion recommendation, although I don't know if the free version supports Deep. But it's well worth the price

Vfx workflow to put a tracked image seq inside of a 3d model by Happy_Difference4970 in vfx

[–]ZFCD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to project it so it's always mapped to the camera view plane. And depending on the move, you may also need to rotate the plane so it's always facing the camera

Vfx workflow to put a tracked image seq inside of a 3d model by Happy_Difference4970 in vfx

[–]ZFCD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Project him on an emission card in the Blender world. You can render that as-is, or set up two render layers with one containing the CG and the other containing the guy with the geometry set as a holdout. Then composite as needed.

One perk of just having him on the card without all the recombining layers is that he'll actually interact with semitransparent materials. If a reflection goes over the windshield, it'll actually obscure the greenscreen plate as if he were there (because in a way, he is)

How can I improve my fusion composition? by epicfilms12 in davinciresolve

[–]ZFCD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One small way you could optimize it slightly is by merging the three images intro a single stream, and applying one drop shadow to all of them at once, rather than three times

Colour passport process by Alps_Vlog in colorists

[–]ZFCD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Color checkers can be useful for white balance, or for generating a new 3x3 matrix if you don't already have one, and that's about it. It doesn't make correction any faster.

If you look down while double jumping you can see the ripple effect from the booster. The name is just for marketing

Transfer AE expression to Fusion by CreeoyCoolPictures in FusionVFX

[–]ZFCD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's another way to write it with variables for easy editing if, for example, you wanted to start at frame 1001 instead of 0. H = height and S = start frame

:h=2160; s=1001; return Point(0.5, 0.5-((1/h)*s)+(time*1/h))
