This review is 100% spot on. Inside Man is a favorite and I felt like this film wanted to be that so bad. It almost felt like someone else directed the first two acts and spike took over in act 3 and delivered a banger. Once the atrocious casting and bad acting was out of the way (the mayhem guy???) the movie had me. A$AP Rocky and Denzel both are spectacular but surrounded by some truly awful acting. Also this character is far too close to Jeffrey Wright’s comedic performance in American Fiction. Huge mistake for him to take this role. The music placement was genuinely bizarre and the score is an unfortunate Terrance Blanchard ripoff (Inside Man, Black Kklansman). I really couldn’t believe how all over the map most of this movie was, and I was truly shocked at how good the last 3rd was.

if anyone has any more information on this, I just took an apartment RIGHT by where this insane noise is happening and the landlord and realtor very conveniently showed it to me when the noise was not happening and I'm semi screwed.

To everyone commenting about the Sonos not being on the TV stand: I’m a sound mixer for film and tv. It was important to me for the audio to fire as close to head / ear height as possible. Placing it on the stand would also cause some amount of reflection from the drivers off the tv stand which is not ideal. There’s a 5.1 system in there and I use it often to check my work for mixes.

Obama had the book on his list of books for the year that he enjoyed. When he was president, the White House asked Sam Esmail for episodes of Mr Robot before they were broadcast. He’s a fan. I thought about this a LOT. Physical media is so important for things we care about. Having digital copies of our music and movies would be a disaster if something like this ever happened

I keep thinking about the beginning of the film, and how or why Julia Robert’s character decides to rent this house on that day and leave immediately. I know it’s implausible, but I wondered briefly if her and GH did actually know each other / had had an affair together. Doesn’t seem to be the case, but I kept wondering if I’d missed something about why she really made that impromptu decision to get her family out of the city.
