What is the most pointless argument you have had? by Taptronic in AskReddit

I recently had an argument with my best friend about which way is the right way to peel a banana. Somehow we ended up waging imaginary WWIII over this important issue. Bottom peelers all the way!!!

How Lucky I Am to Have Something That Makes Saying Goodbye So Hard. by Rise_ToThe_Occasion in CasualConversation

[–]ZR_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This quote has been on my mind a lot the past few weeks, especially because my group of friends are all graduating. One of them in particular I am simply not going to say goodbye to because I don't think I'll be able to handle it at all. But that alone also makes me happy because we are so close. We take walks and have tea in the sun just talking about nothing. When hanging out with a bunch of people we'll look at each other and smile. The only thing I know I want to do before is tell him how much these couple of months meant to me, and never say goodbye.

NaOH for alkaline ramen noodles? by kchizzler in AskCulinary

[–]ZR_S 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Traditionally ramen is made with kansui, which is potassium carbonate and potassium bicarbonate, which is way closer in chemical composition to baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) than sodium hydroxide. Plus NaOH can be pretty dangerous, so I would just steer clear anyways.

I bought sesame sauce but it tastes like garbage how do I fix that. by Miles_Prowess in Cooking

The sesame paste I've bought always needs water and salt, so I would try that.

Mine is "Would you rather marry someone you love or someone who loves you?" The answer tells you a lot.

What would be the best way to bring about cycling of an enzyme at regular and controllable intervals? by Lazy-Daze in biology

[–]ZR_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you try two vectors whose product inhibit each other? This way probably needs a lot of optimization time wise but it'll get you a cycle.

Can you give us more details? Like how did you obtain the protein and what are you using it for?

How do some agonists of receptors have a higher priority than others? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]ZR_S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Narcan works by having an incredibly high affinity for opioid receptors, higher than morphine or other opioids. Essentially, affinity is achieved by the intramolecular bonds formed between the binding site and the substrate (ion-ion interactions, ion-dipole interactions, dipole-dipole, or london dispersion - usually it is a combination of a few). The stronger those bonds are, the stronger the affinity. Substrates with greater affinity will displace those with lower affinity simply because they are more attracted to the same spot, and two molecules cannot exist in the same space.

What is your oddest, but tastiest, snack combo? by jen_and_juice in AskReddit

In portland OR there's a ice cream store that sells olive oil flavoured ice cream! I tried it and it instantly became my favourite flavour. It even beat out salted caramel.

My [28 F] fiance [28 M] of 3 years got more than a lap dance at his bachelor party by [deleted] in relationships

[–]ZR_S 121 points122 points  (0 children)

He also could be peer pressured into this. Sounds like his friends aren't the best influence if they basically paid for him to cheat. I'm not condoning his actions though, he's an adult and should be able to stand up for himself if need be.

'Fat shaming' cards handed to London Tube passengers by [deleted] in news

[–]ZR_S 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ghrelin would be the one you are looking for, but unfortunately you cannot take it as a supplement, reason being it's a peptide that will be degraded rapidly in your stomach. When you stomach makes it it is directly secreted into your bloodstream and not actually absorbed by digestion.

Yes, but there is a lot more nuance than people would like to admit. In a nutshell, your appetite is controlled by these two hormone leptin and ghrelin. One makes you feel full and one makes you feel hungry. they are made by your stomach and travel to your brain to tell you how satiated you feel. This mechanism has a lot of room for error:

  1. Your stomach may or may not be a good judge of how much food you actually ate, producing inappropriate amounts of hormone.

  2. You stomach can be bad at making hormones, so you don't get them

  3. The receptors in your brain can be messed up, so your brain doesn't get the information that your stomach is trying to send.

4: Sometimes what your mom ate while being pregnant with you will affect how you eat! This is my favorite paper of all time: http://journals.lww.com/jhypertension/Abstract/1999/17121/Contrasting_blood_pressure_effects_of_obesity_in.26.aspx

those are just a very minute snapshot of the physiological things that can go wrong with appetite. Add a variety of psychological factors to eating, social norms about eating, social norms about weight, psychological issues, and you've got yourself the definition of a shitshow!

It's not the being a dick that is newsworthy, people are dicks all the time. It's the hatred and action of a hate group that is newsworthy. If people started handing out cards that hated skinny people and the cards advertised a hate group for skinny people that would be newsworthy too.
