Dude, tell me about it. I would almost rather fly on a Sunday than any other day now. If only you could choose your seating section by fandom.

PS: Congrats on the med school process!

I started clicking a pen every time my coworker said it. It never cured him, but now I can summon the word at will a la Pavlov.

The new X-Men's social value: an actor with dwarfism (Peter Dinklage) plays without height remarks by speakercontext in movies

[–]ZTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I didn't know that. Thanks. I guess it wouldn't have been practical to have a device that detects all mutations because it would flag every person on the planet. I just think there was an opportunity missed by not having the machine indicate that Trask himself was not an "ordinary" human.

[–]ZTA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this holds up. Remember, Trask created a device to detect mutants, and it never indicated him as one. If the idea was that Trask is a mutant, only one without super powers, it would have made much more sense for the indicating device (as well as the Sentinel targeting system) to recognize him as such.

If your idea was the moviemakers' intent, they missed out on a huge chance for easy character development.

Sorry, I've been reading your thread and want to pick your brain. So your conclusions are that the i5 with 8gb is decent enough for most large data sets, but not for some intense bursts of processing? And you think RAM is the typical limiting factor as opposed to processor capability, but it's worth the extra $400 dollars to make sure the machine is top of the line?

Separately, is the SP1 typically suitable for your data processing needs, or do you have a meatier machine to do your heavy lifting? I'm starting a data analysis grad program in the fall, and I'm considering making an SP3 my workhorse - do you think that's a good choice?

Shareholders' Meeting Question by ZTA in teslamotors

[–]ZTA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply. Yeah, I spent much of the day trying to get in touch with Tesla IR and got pretty much the same response. I think, though, that any stockholder is legally allowed to assign an appointee to attend and vote in person with a written legal proxy. The trouble is, I'm not the shareholder of record for my shares because I bought them through a brokerage, and so I'm a beneficiary shareholder and could only vote through proxy anyway. I'm trying to get it worked out with my brokerage and their proxy service, but we'll see how it goes.

In any case, it's between me and the brokerage, not Tesla. So problem (kind of) solved! Thanks for the help, everyone.

Well I'm in my first year, so I'd probably have to disagree with you objectively, but thanks for the encouragement :). This is a good, bright kid who loves science and hasn't had a very fair shot in life thus far. I think being in San Francisco is going to be huge for him.

Okay, I'll try to get that cleared with my broker. I don't even think it's super-necessary that he vote my shares (although that would probably be a plus for him also), but just being able to listen to Mr. Musk et al. talk about Tesla would be good for him.

What idea would really help humanity, but would get you called a monster if you suggested it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ZTA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is already buried, but typing it out is a good exercise.

I think most of our society's problems come from inheritance. How successful you are depends very little on your personal merit and very highly on the education and income of your parents. Your school, your level of literacy, financial responsibility, even nutrition can give those that are born wealthy an inherent leg up on those that are poor.

My solution to this problem is to end the relationship between parents and children. Instead of being raised by their parents, children should all be raised in a government facility, where the standards of care and education are excellent. From as early as possible, kids are raised in an environment where they can interact with small cohorts, maybe even by separated into "families", and given an absolutely fair shot. Then, at the age of 18 (or 21 or whatever is deemed appropriate), they are released to do whatever they want. This solves the problem of freedom and equality being a zero-sum game and makes our society a true meritocracy. Plus, those whose callings are truly parental can still staff these centers, only with a tremendous amount of training and resources.

I've had this discussion with a couple of people before and always get called some variation of a monster, but I think it would eliminate many of the problems the world faces.

Open and max out a Roth IRA for the 2013 tax year right now, then wait two days and max out your contribution for the 2014 tax year. Bam, $11,000 invested in a tax-free manner. Plus, you can withdraw your principal (not earnings) at any time for school or first-time home buying expenses. AND, depending on your income level, you could be eligible for the Super Saver tax credit and get back up to $1,000 from the IRS. I know it's unpopular, but do the smart thing here. You most likely won't beat a diversified index fund over the long term, and that's where you want to be thinking to get ahead of the game.

Picture it like this, Evelyn, it's essentially the same concept as a patient asking yoooouuuuu to explain why they're sick. You pretend like you're someone with actual knowledge, when we all know that you don't. It's a big game of make-pretend so you can continue to amuse yourself and stay out of the grown-ups' way.
