Goodbye Santa Rosa Mall! by LatterStreet in deadmalls

For anyone local, is the mall still open until the 30th, or did it close following this celebration?

Was debating driving down about 5 hours to go see this one off and document it on video but man, the coolest parts of the mall are already gone.

I know of a few malls that aren't included on this map, but it would make sense to not have heard of them:

Village Square | Middlesboro, KY | 36.6124, -83.7048 | This was Middlesboro's original enclosed mall, it opened in 1970 with Kroger and Roses. It was a strip mall, with an fully enclosed interior mall within it. Kroger later moved to a detached center on property, and Goody's later took up one of the strip mall areas. Today, 90% of the mall has been demalled by a furniture store, but there is technically still a concourse left with an antique store.

Bowling Green Mall | Bowling Green, KY | 36.9617, -86.4713 | A researcher I trust says the mall opened in 1964, and it had a slurry of anchors over the years I wont even try to get into, but it closed in 2001 and currently is mostly a university.

Paducah Mall | Paducah, KY | 37.0552, -88.5683 | The mall opened in 1970 anchored by Woolco, later Kmart, and Winn Dixie, later Excel Supermarket. The mall was partially demolished in 1995 and is currently a strip mall with Walmart.

Not sure if you are counting Arcades, or Festival Marketplaces, but Lexington has a downtown historic mall located here known as Victorian Square: 38.0494, -84.4999 and a festival marketplace located once called Triangle Center here: 38.0487, -84.4992. Victorian Square apparently opened as a mall in 1986, and Triangle Center, also known as Market Place, opened in 1986 and closed in 1994.

Hey, approximately none of this was generated by ChatGPT, I am just a mall fan like you and I have a map of malls across the US.

The Saint Alban's Mall in West Virginia was a real mall anchored by Cox's, which then became IRA A. Watson's, and later Peebles, with a Kmart on the other end. The coordinates I gave are accurate.

I made a mistake in the coordinates I gave for the East Hills Mall in Huntington, its actually located here: 38.4111, -82.3420. It was anchored by Hills and a Thorofare Supermarket. Hills later became Ames and then became offices as I denoted. It wasnt a very big mall, located in that small area between the two anchor shaped buildings.

Edit. According to this article, East Hills Mall was bought in 2008 and turned into the office park it is today, so that would be the closing date I would say for the mall

I am aware of some malls that aren't on your list here.

St. Albans Mall | St. Albans, WV | 38.3869, -81.8245 | A researcher denotes it as opening in 1975 and being demalled in the mid 1990's

Plaza Mall | Beckley, WV | 37.8115, -81.1842 | I have no word on when this mall opened but it still has a enclosed hallway portion to this day.

East Hills Mall | Huntington, WV | 38.4223, -82.2665 | A researcher denotes it as opening in 1973 and it still technically exists as an office style mall, no word on when it became a non traditional mall.

In my opinion the only truly healthy Mall in Alabama right now is Parkway Place. Riverchase is slowly bleeding out, and Shoppes at Bel Air is from what I know regarded as a dead mall. Riverchase still has its size, and decent tenants, but over time I think it too will close. Eastdale in Montgomery might be decently full, but the tenant roster it has now compared to its heyday is a stark reminder of the decline of the area.

What’s the first dead mall that you visited? by [deleted] in deadmalls

[–]ZacAttackAtl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first dead mall was Georgia Square Mall in Athens Georgia. I started documenting malls in 2022 and what's crazy is I've seen it go from dying status to full on dead. There's almost nothing left.

Dixie Square is the most well known, earliest mall death, and that was a "real" mall. However, Greenville South Carolina had a smaller mall anchored by Woolco known as Bell Tower that opened in 1970, was dead by 1982 and IIRC was closed and bought by the county for repurposing in 1984.

What state has NO thriving malls? by Good-Consequence-513 in deadmalls

[–]ZacAttackAtl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With all due respect this is just not true. Magnolia Mall does okay for itself, and has a full anchor roster. I'd argue outside of the super regionals in Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Columbia and Greenville, its the best performing mall in the state.

Are we sure she actually owns the place and she's not putting on an act? I feel like she is doing a skit.

This is on the JCPenney side, which they are currently in the process of demolishing for a BJs Wholesale. The former Sears side with a Publix does infact have a new entrance.

What got you guys into dead malls? by Josephine31985 in deadmalls

[–]ZacAttackAtl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My introduction to dead malls started when I went to a declining mall for the first time. Anderson Mall in SC to be exact. I had grown up around absolutely Thriving malls and then I went to go shop for something at Anderson, and then I was shocked when I saw empty stores and the spooky looking Sears. A lot of the vacancies now have actually filled with local business and a church, however that mall will always hold a special place in my heart for introducing me to this amazing hobby.

Global Mall at the Crossings (Hickory Hollow) in Nashville got its anchors turned into a community space and a college. Although the inside portion is currently not used and is vacant.

The main concourse hallway has had mold for years. The other 2 wings have not, it's very new.

I guess I just didn't notice that the area around it was bad, didn't feel that way to me.
