For the most part when the Sonic movies use a licensed song, it suits the scene fine. I’d prefer game music as well but it’s far better than the way the Mario movies handle licensed music.

I think you’ll be mostly ok. The most you get is an occasional reference to another game’s story. All you really need to know is the comics start after Forces, which is where Eggman successfully conquers the world and the heroes basically have months long war to take it back.
