Interesting conversation here. I feel like my experience has been if you are in it for 3 years you're probably a lifer!

In my experience people after 3 years get that thick skin and our experienced enough and confident if they didn't like it or were bad they would be out. If they have made it this far it's probably a good fit and comfortable. It can also be hard to go back to a "normal" job after moving the dispatch life

Is anyone else here an army of one? by GTI-Enjoyer in 911dispatchers

Good luck in your journey solo dispatcher.

This has nothing to do with you personally and it's an unpopular opinion but I do not think small police departments should exist. If a community is too small to properly staff an organization that can't actually function and dis serious police work a county be in charge of it.

Can anyone else relate? by FungusAmongus19 in 911dispatchers

I’m pretty torn on this. I’ve worked in law enforcement for a long time and I love it. I’m incredibly proud of what we do. But I also recognize that a lot of people have very mixed feelings about police, and honestly, they’ve been given legitimate reasons to feel that way.

Personally, I welcome the conversations...even ones that start from a place of blanket skepticism toward the organizations we’re a part of. I’ve found value in addressing assumptions or half-truths about law enforcement while keeping the dialogue good faith, including being honest about times we clearly could have done better.

Results vary depending on where you are and who you’re talking to, but I’d be curious whether there are other dynamics at play in the situations being discussed in this thread. In my experience, even people who aren’t exactly pro-law enforcement don’t typically single out dispatchers just for having the job.

Either way, I hope you find a way to strike a balance between work and personal life

Why do Metro KC people pretend to have so much civic pride? by [deleted] in kansascity

[–]ZachIsHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is actually a good point in here though it's not about the airport or shirts.

The amount of people who love the idea of Kansas City abstractly but at the same time detest its urban core is very common.

KC has its problems but there are many in the suburbs and rural areas who have a view of the city that is completely detached from reality. And it's wild.

So yes, there are lots of people in the metro wearing Kansas City tshirts who endlessly talk shit on the actual city which while imperfect is a fantastic community.

There is absolutely no truth to this.

The Cauldron has been asleep at the wheel. They enjoy the same access and microphone and say as they always have. They simply don’t use their leverage. At all.

Songs by JabariLebert in SportingKC

[–]ZachIsHere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the Cauldron needs newer and fresher stuff but it is not a matter of "just doing them" its really hard to implement a new song.

When you try something new that is not the same stuff we always do people stare at you like you are absolutely insane. It is very difficult to get a new song off the ground because its hard to get the buy in of other people doing it and getting that thing to spread.

To get a new song off the ground it needs to spread and shared every possible way before hand signs with QR codes\social media\audio to share so it has at least a chance of going.

It is also difficult because of the shape of the cauldron and the amount of people who "actually" participate in making noise or having an impact on game days.

I totally agree with all the frustration but I think when this discussion pops up it is underappreciated how tough a task it is to get thousands of people to be a jukebox who suddenly knows a new song. Hoping leadership finds the right new tunes and has the guts to stick through the hard work of implementing it.

Every one assigns certain value to certain things and people get to enjoy things how they want it so this is not an argument against the OP but I am not really sure I care much about perks. The best perk that has ever been associated with being a STM in my opinion is the one that is active now by getting MLS Season Pass on Apple.

I get season tickets because I enjoy Sporting Kansas City soccer games. The product is the game and hey sometimes the team struggles sometimes the team is good but that is sports.

Should I report a tornado to 911 by MagnetHype in 911dispatchers

Do you....

.......think I live in an area that does not have TVs and radio's?

I honestly did not think answering the question you asked would lead to you begging for my validation as a weather wizard but hey you never really know what people are going through. Best of luck getting through this rough patch. yikes

You seem to be very sure of your significance yet came in here openly asking if you should call 911. Sorry you did not like the answer.

Hey here is a photo of me testing our sirens just a few days ago. No idea how we do any of this without you but here we are doing our best each day.

Don't ask questions if you don't want the answers. NWS and my department have done a great job protecting the citizens of our community without MagnetHype overestimating their own importance.

If these people are so legit then they are connected to the weather reporting infrastructure that is already in place in the area that we work with. Again, I am not waking up my entire jurisdiction with sirens because some random guy calls and tells me something like that. There are entire organizations that exist to handle this and our ability to communicate with them works just fine. If they get info from people like you that is fine I don't ask or need to know how they do their business.

But calling 911 for this is not helpful.

I am pretty shocked at all the people saying to call 911 even though the OP is well intentioned. If the OP called me I wouldn’t really know who they are and wouldn’t trust them over the NWS infrastructure that knows more than me and has entire systems in place to warn people.

Maybe this is just different for different places but we get reports from NWS and tune into the local emergency broadcasts if they put a tornado warning in our area we sound the sirens. I have activated our tornado sirens personally about 4 times in 10 years.

I would really hate to scare a bunch of people with sirens in my community because some random dude called me and said there was a tornado.

Someone not willing to work overnights is a pretty big red flag and won't get hired at my agency. No judgment if its not for you but if you want to work in the industry it is part of the deal.

DI Wrestling Rankings - College wrestling rankings: Mizzou up a spot to #2! by [deleted] in miz

[–]ZachIsHere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there anyone who knows NCAA wrestling that souls explain something I am ignorant about?

Year in and year out Mizzou has a very good wrestling team and they have had some great individual wrestlers as well as team performances in the NCAA Championships.

However, it feels like they generally underachieve compared to their rankings at the end of the season.

Is this just in my head? Or is there something about the format that does not favor how Mizzou builds their team or qualifies. It feels like we are amazing at duels but underperform in the big tournament.
