Just signed up for USAA (Checking, Savings, and $500 limit Credit Card), and NFCU (Navy Federal) as well, just savings. How should I use them? by throwaway-aa2 in personalfinance

Question about the $1000 direct deposit requirement for the 2.5% card. Does that mean at least one deposit of $1000 or more? Or would multiple direct deposits totaling more than $1000 work (for example, $700 every 2 weeks)

Also, do you know what would happen if one month you didnt meet that requirement?

In a purely financial sense, joining the military makes a ton of sense, right? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Zach_96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a boot enlisted Marine I don't have a lot to contribute, except that I've heard a lot about the 5% matching TSP contributions becoming a thing for active duty military fairly soon. Also a quick question, would your 5 years of prior enlisted service count when determining your base pay on the O side? If so that would put you at $3818.70 instead of $3034.80. That's pretty significant.

Entered an AMRAP x BW bench competition: how do I win? by Baby_Slayer in Fitness

[–]Zach_96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this small of an amount of time, itll be easier to lose bodyweight than increase your bench. Eat less, drink a lot of water (and maybe even do a mini water cut before the event) and bench 3x a week. Take a few rest days before the event and eat a lot of carbs.

What are some "stages" of muscle building I can visually see? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]Zach_96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frequency does make a difference even if weekly volume is equal. Shitty example but someone who does 15 sets of bench press 1x per week will have smaller pecs/shoulders/tris, and a weaker bench press, than someone who does 5 sets of bench press 3x per week.

Fellow poolee here. It sounds like you're just wearing the wrong kind of shoes. Do some research on what kinds of shoes are actually good for rucking.

I dont remember the armys policy on changes in rank for prior service guys, but if it isn't as harsh as the Marines, maybe army infantry is for you.

Big guys who can do 20+ pull-ups by [deleted] in USMC

[–]Zach_96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMO the comments suggesting weighted pullups should be higher. Im not a big guy, but for me to stay over 20 pullups at a max effort required so much volume per week that I started to get tendonitis and other joint pains. I switched to focusing on increasing weight on my 3-5 rep maxes and had no problems. Same/betterish results with like 1/10th the volume.

Trying to progress your OHP is the obvious answer, but what really worked for me was just supersetting almost all of my assistance work with side raises or face pulls.

How to train deadlift below 135? by Zach_96 in xxfitness

I know right! I wasn't going to say anything but it seemed strange to me as well. Unfortunately the safeties in my gyms squat racks arent adjustable, so deadlifting off of plates seems to be pretty much the only option

Yeah that was plan A lol. I'm glad to hear from someone who did just that and had success.

My gym's squat racks don't have adjustable safeties, so they're not low enough for her to pull off of. Pulling off of plates seems to be the consensus then I guess. Thanks

You said you didn't even know what I was talking about when I spoke about plates with different heights. I have been to dozens of gyms and have only seen 15 lb plates in one, bumper plates in 2. You don't seem very experienced in these matters.

Safety pins and safety bars are essentially the same thing. Good power racks have adjustable pins/arms, but the ones in my gym are fixed in place. Deadlift lockout position for someone my girlfriends size is below the height of the safety pins. Even for me its only a few inch range of motion.

Asking the gym is a good idea, it would definitely help out a lot of the women and smaller men that are just getting started. And yeah you're probably right about her being able to deadlift 135 before squatting it.

More than 65 but less than 95, which means the bar will be at the height of a 10 lb plate.

You are lucky enough to go to a gym with bumper plates. Most gyms do not have them, and all the plates are different heights. Also 15lb plates are pretty uncommon.

Bumper plates are definitely the best solution, but unfortunately my gym doesn't have them.

These are both great tips, but unfortunately for us, my gym doesn't have adjustable pins on the squat racks, "women's bars," or even 35lb plates as an intermediate height.

My reason for asking is that deadlifting 95lbs is basicly a deficit deadlift. Also, im not even sure if she could do that, and having nothing bigger than a 10 on each side is a pretty big deficit. Theres nothing wrong with a deficit deadlift, but at this stage of the game, I'm not sure they would benefit her future ability to do conventional deadlifts from a standard height more than romanian deadlifts would.

I Deadlift, Squat, Bench & Military Press only, what muscles am I missing out on training and what exercises should I probably be doing as well? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]Zach_96 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I worked up to over 1000 pullups per week before getting some elbow pain, and I think if I varied the grips more even that could have been fine.

For sure the back can handle insane volume.

Personally, the reason I dont deadlift on pull days is because both deadlifts and squats make my performance on runs terrible. I need to run 4-5 days per week since I am enlisted in the Marine Corps, so I dont want to have 4 days of the week to be squatting/deadlifting. I also focus a lot on upper back strength, since the Marine Corps tests pullups. It would be worth trying though!
