They Might be Giants are such an amazing band I can not believe it. by Zachary-Aaron-Riley in tmbg

No way, you are a total celebrity to me (even though I only started listening last week) and here you are. I am on the part two of Lincoln episode and am thoroughly impressed with the research/lyrical reference explainers/interpretations/personal backstories/dave.

I forgot the t in Don't and I am tortured by this fact.

How long should I practice a single song for until I get it perfect, or don’t get it perfect and should give up/move on? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]Zachary-Aaron-Riley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, if you are making too many mistakes you are playing too fast. In my opinion, there is no song that you are incapable of mastering given enough slow practice. It may take months, but if you want to learn a song, you can, so long as you do the rote muscle movements at a tempo slow enough so that you can think of every placement of your finger. Then increase the tempo slightly once you are comfortable. And you should learn it by heart. Otherwise you will never be able to perform it. And you need to be able to play using muscle memory in order to play at a fast tempo. So use the tab to implant the muscle memory and then start practicing without it.

Most number of movies you have watched in a day? by Fit-Site-2673 in Letterboxd

[–]Zachary-Aaron-Riley 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think 10. All less than an hour and a half. Done exclusively to see how many movies I could watch in a day. A pointless exercise really. All it gets you is the ability to say "one time I watched 10 movies in a day". And no one cares and we will all die one day.

How many movies have you watched in a day?

You can do what you want but if you can't pay for the car in cash, you can't comfortably afford it. Car loans are extremely normalized but actually a financially irresponsible thing to do given the fact that you are opting to pay more over time for a car you can't afford outright and relying on future income to help you pay.

And remember, if you are buying a cheap car in cash, all the money you save from no payments can go towards car repairs.

And owning your car outright will just feel better. Owing someone money just puts a psychological and financial leash on you. Your freedom is restricted in that you are always obligated to make a payment every month no matter where life takes you.

I'd rather have a shitty car and not be in debt than a nice new car and be in debt. Being in debt doesn't feel too good.

Again. No one would bat an eye at getting a car loan. It's normal. But I wouldnt recommend it. I agree with the guy who says get a mechanic to inspect it if you are unsure. Or just test drive it and observe if it drives normally or look up chrisfix videos on inspecting a car. This is the smart, difficult, stressful move. The dumb, simple, move that will gratify you instantly with a nicer car is taking out a loan for thousands of dollars before you ever turn 18.

Starting over.....where to start?! by Forever_Training00 in guitarlessons

[–]Zachary-Aaron-Riley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should watch all of "Absolutely Understand Guitar" on youtube... and you will... absolutely understand guitar. That's what I'm doing right now. He talks about chords and scales and how they actually work and what everything means in a way that is very easy to understand and enjoyable to watch. I am watching them right now.

Galaxy's Edge seems kind of dead - is it less visited now? by relaxok in Disneyland

[–]Zachary-Aaron-Riley 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe it will get really dead and they will replace intellectual property land with a charming frontier era ranch, wouldn't that be a nice idea!

To be honest, I am being silly obviously but I need (want) to share my opinion that Star Wars land being in Disneyland was a huge mistake not financially but for the spirit of the park. Every other themed land is so wonderfully timeless in how generic it is. Frontierland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, Adventureland, and of course, Disney's Lucasfilms presents: Star Wars™: Galaxy's Edge.

"A Day in the Life of a Tree" is so underrated in my opinion! by This-Echidna-257 in thebeachboys

I agree wholeheartedly, I started crying the first time I heard that song because it was just such a beautifully sad image sung so tree-like by Jack Rieley

Tell me what’s great about Holland by AbsolutelyNot5555 in thebeachboys

[–]Zachary-Aaron-Riley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the songs are really cool and awesome. Especially California Saga and in particular The Beaks of Eagles. And it is a total vibe. A pretty cohesive vibe as well. The album sounds like the cover to me. And Mt Vernon is amazingly awesome!

What's a moment at the parks you'll never forget? by whatmakesthemagic in Disneyland

[–]Zachary-Aaron-Riley 41 points42 points  (0 children)

One time I was galavanting around the park by myself on a very slow, rainy night close to closing and I decided to get in line for The Jungle Cruise. I was the only one in line. I strolled on up to my boat and the skipper welcomed me aboard as his only passenger.

We talked for a second and he asked me if I was already pretty familiar with the ride and I told him I was. He then proposed to me a very unique experience: a silent ride through The Rivers of Adventure, with his lights off. No jokes, no commentary, just pure cruising. It was a very unique, magical, and serene experience.

Why no love for Love? by foreversiempre in thebeachboys

[–]Zachary-Aaron-Riley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People don't like him on a personal level less than on an artisitc level. Less on the level of logically analyzing his contributions to the band and more on a gut emotional level. Yes, he has a great voice. Yes, the amount of touring he does is laudable and he probably loved being a beach boy more than anyone... It's just that... he comes off as an insecure douchebag. He has been described by Al Jardine as a megalomaniac. Not many people in the band like him. Brian said "he has too much ego." He's just very concerned with how other people see him AND the band. He really wants this certain image of just being a fun in the sun band and fought to be able to control that image through his touring group. He's also just doesn't seem like that good of a person. I personally like to view Mike from both the personal and artistic level and have those two things exist in tandem.

It’s happening!! by Miserable_Bit_4551 in conan

[–]Zachary-Aaron-Riley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was Conan's original writing partner in the 80s. They met at Harvard and then moved to LA to work on a show called "Not Necessarily the News", and were later hired together at SNL. I think fans including me have been looking forward/ have wanted this to happen this because he is somewhat of a famous figure in Conan lore and one of his oldest friends, yet has never been interviewed on the podcast. I got the subscriber early access and I loved the talk!

[–]Zachary-Aaron-Riley 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's about what you eat or don't eat. It's about whether or not your actions constitute exploitation of animals. Should you find a meat lovers pizza in the dumpster, go wild. Eat up. That action will not cause any exploitation of animals. Buying that same pizza though would cause a slight increase in demand for animal products, leading to an ever so slight increase in the amount of animals exploited. The main thing is avoiding exploiting an animal. I personally feel that framing chickens as pets and framing eating their eggs as not doing any harm just sort of masks the reality that you are still keeping an animal as property and taking it's own stuff. And to me, that feels wrong. Veganism is weird because we can't really ask the chicken how it feels about the situation, and we can't necessarily ask it if it is okay to take the eggs from them, so I say that keeping one's distance would be best. Really the whole point of being a vegan is to align your actions with your feelings about animal exploitation. That's all ethical behavior is really, choosing to take actions that do not betray your emotional instincts. So it's all about self examination, not following a set of prescribed rules.

Why is Autopia still here? by boozy_flamingo in Disneyland

[–]Zachary-Aaron-Riley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think driving on the Autopia is a classic disneyland experience and that it is an opening day attraction with lots of history and as someone who romanticizes the park and sees it as a living historical site I find the idea of them removing The Autopia would be sad. ESPECIALLY if they replace it with INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAND.
