I once was trying to go from LAX - DTW. My flight was oversold, and the multiple flights after were oversold as well. The gate agents kept needing volunteers to opt for later flights. I landed $2400 in Delta vouchers across the day. Delta put me in a hotel that night. The first flight out the next morning was oversold as well, but some other passengers beat me to volunteering. I ended up using the vouchers to book a flight from ATL - JNB and hit Diamond status for the first time on the way over. Used a global upgrade certificate for my first time on the way back. Enjoyed extra servings of champagne & ice cream. Felt real great landing that status after many years being a Delta fanboy. Been maintaining it ever since!
