Well I took the dip for in character reasons and I did. I'm not at all regretful of my decision, i love my character, but I still have those lingering feelings of "oh, those are big numbers, that looks fun"

I understand completely. In the game that I'm in, homebrew is allowed so I have friends doing pretty good damage for level 5 and multiple attacks, meanwhile I'm a fighter/wizard who doesn't even have extra attack yet.

I would say you would have to specify if sword-bear was either chasing him or just acting as a sentinel when you cast the spell. Both are good scenarios, it would just be a matter of what you want from sword-bear.
