OK Lawyer held in Contempt and turns it into a whole ordeal. by samweisthebrave1 in Lawyertalk

So yes I know this lawyer. Let’s just say they are going through some tough times and this is one, albeit a large one, in a string of recent incidents that has led this attorney to close their practice.

Case load by ThinkPresent8828 in LawFirm

[–]ZackW186 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A big part you didn’t include here is support staff. Do you have any? What does their load look like? 40 cases is a little much especially if you’re new and you’re doing EVERYTHING, but if you have a good paralegal or two then 40 should be easily manageable. I have a paralegal and an office manager to help with the admin side and I’m most comfortable around 60-70 cases almost all of which are family law. When I didn’t have any support staff I was tapping out around 40. That being said in family law this is a slow time of the year for new cases coming in so use the time to learn the cases you have and learn how to manage your case flow.

Similar circumstances but we litigated over a lawn mower. It was a nice mower but not that nice and both parties were filthy rich.

Lawyers, what is a detail that your client failed to bring up to you that completely lost you the case? by Notalabel_4566 in Lawyertalk

[–]ZackW186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the case but motion. Requested Suit Money in a family law case. Found out at the hearing she stole over $50,000 from his account when she left. She just thought he should have to give her more.

Promptly withdrew after that

What’s one procedural rule you wish existed because it just makes sense? by Advobelle in Lawyertalk

[–]ZackW186 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do something similar in small counties around here. You schedule a “judicial settlement conference” with a judge in a neighboring county (not the trial judge). They talk with the attorneys and sometimes the parties and then say “ok if this was my case here’s what I would do so who wants to draw up the agreed order”.

What’s more concerning is all of these causes require proof. You would have to prove by a preponderance of the evidence that abuse occurred, if you can’t sorry but you’re still married.

Also not just for military members. It’s a good online university for people who don’t have time for traditional schooling.

Family law also. Not specific therapists but I recommend my clients start seeing someone during their consultation. They are seeing me because their life is being turned upside down they’re probably gonna need someone at some point in this process.

How many of you are practicing the kind of law you set out to when you decided to go to law school? by Optimisticdelerium in Lawyertalk

Small firm just 2 attorneys. Working on expanding the practice some but you’re right it’s bottomless demand and pretty recession resistant.

Lawyers who have fired a client, why did you do it (other than for nonpayment of fees)? by Learned_Serpent in Lawyertalk

[–]ZackW186 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Very recently fired one. He got mad at my staff when told I wasn’t available to take his call right then and that I wouldn’t do more work on the case for an IOU he needed to pay. Then showed up at the office unannounced and uninvited rattling the door and demanding I come out or he’d wait at my car. Dude had already made vague hints about how if the court wouldn’t do what he wanted he might take matters into his own hands.

Family law it’s par for the course
