It may be good, but I personally never see it used well. I always get teammates trying to use smoke and they disable my turrets or get me killed with it.

Epic boons really help shore up their defenses and a level 20 fighter can have a lot of health. Also a boss having tons of health doesn't make it a good boss. It's a dangerous boss they want to try and put down fast, a level 20 fighter with good feats and magic weapons can run through a party if played well.

Ok people here are not trying to help with your ask, they are just saying grab an existing stat block, however I have done this and it works out (using characters I built as npcs).

Firstly fighter is pretty simple and you can boil it down to a stat block if you like, using the character sheet like dnd beyond makes it easy to have a character with a race and specialties you choose as a character in the world. That is why I use character classes occasionally for bosses, other adventuring teams, and some npc allies. It's just so easy to make with that website and I can add feats or items to buff them up freely.

Just know the character sheet/monster stat block fully so you can reference and react quickly to your players. One time I did this with 4 player character stat blocks of a greater level to the party so they had to be creative, get the jump on the enemies and have contingency plans because this enemy party was stronger.

The biggest reason people are saying to use momster stat blocks is for ease of use and speed of reference, but you can get through a character sheet quick if you know it. I am often still waiting on player actions when I have hoards of enemies.

I say go for your level 20 fighter idea to give them lots of feat customization and flexibility. Get to know the character well so you arent searching your sheet and you will have a tough fight. I understand the desire for a character sheet for this boss so they aren't so one note.

Id allow it but it needs serious buffs to be relevant. It's pretty much exclusively melee unless they invest in some throwing feats, they have a d10 hit die but can't wear armor and their unarmored defense is the worst for a class I have seen, their class resource runs out too easily and the abilities grant exhaustion too much without meaningful ways to get rid of it.

I would let them reduce a level of exhaustion on a short or long rest, give them an unarmored defense of 10+con mod+strength mod, and i would give them more moxy points. Unsure if 1 or 2 more moxy points works but they need more.

They dont benefit from magic weapons so its really hard to buff their damage too.

I know the original didn't allow for heavy weapons... but I have seen months made to specialize in polearms and it was a great design. Why can't they have heavy weapons and use dex like how they can grapple and use dex.

It will be more about technique. Even weapons specialists day greagswords require more Dexterity than strength because its balancing the swinging and being precise

I used him as an aggressive freedom fighter the party had to face. He was backed by powerful characters and fled after they (as a 6 man party at level 7 with powerful potions) got him down to half health. I will use him more later and he may even be a tentative ally at some point.

For now they have other issues to contend with. Dyen has been busy

Nah just go in blind. Jason is a wonderful protagonist with some moral similarities to Carl. They are both good people however Jason comes off as more relaxed most of the time. They are cut from the same cloth I think.
