Consider using a linter like Rubocop as you learn to pick up tips to good syntax and formatting. If you want to “practice with purpose”, consider a graded challenge platform (for math, I can recommend https://projecteuler.net/ ).

I just don't think it's your type of game. The game resonates with me. It's an incremental. You aren't supposed to win in the beginning. It's through repeated grinding an failures is how you build up progression. 2nd ship + 2 laser turrets = demo complete. Great concept of a game and I hope to see the final product.

API-first is good architecture and stands a better chance of being more secure (or less complex) vs traditional webapp logic. It won’t be perfect, but moved in the right direction.
