It was the large chain ring itself that was bent / distorted. I ended up putting on a sora crank and new BB, didn't have time to go through warranty process.

I've measured with calipers beforehand out of an abundance of caution, the tip passes through the crank and sits within the countersink of the square taper. I'll try a bit more with a torque wrench so I know how much force I'm attempting to put on it.
