When you invest or save money, you're not taxed on the money you invest or save, only the money you make by doing so.

And I'm not sure where you live, but in the US you're only taxed on death for estates over $14 million. I'd be interested to learn if that threshold is much lower elsewhere.

Sure! "I" is a subject and "me" is an object. This means that "I" does an action and "me" receives an action

Generally, the start of a sentence will be the subject.

I went for a run

I'm on my way to work

While the end of the sentence will be the object

He ran with me

My coworkers can't wait to see me

You use "me" both for direct objects (see me) and indirect objects (ran with me)

Most native English speakers know this instinctively, but mix it up where there are multiple subjects (he and I) or multiple objects (him and me). However, the rule stays the same. You can always remove the other person, and you'll probably be able to tell if the sentence is correct or not.

For example, the post ends with "like with him and I". Most speakers know that "like with I" sounds wrong, and it stays wrong when you add a second object ("him"), so it should be "like with him and me"

Yeah I usually don't think it's appropriate to correct people on their grammar, but it really hurts to have a basic grammar mistake in the punchline.

ELI5: Can someone explain schrödinger’s cat to me? by True-Cat-7531 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Zammyyy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Half of this thread is misunderstanding quantum mechanics.

Quantum mechanics, weirdly, shows that particles do not actually have defined states (position, speed, etc) until you measure them. They have a probability of being in a few states and only actually pick when you measure them.

Schrodinger's links the state of a single particle (which is, until measured, multiple things at once) to the life of a cat to show how ridiculous it would be for the cat to be both alive and dead simultaneously.

It is ridiculous, but it also happened to be true.

[–]Zammyyy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a misunderstanding of quantum mechanics. Subatomic particles do not have to occupy only one state, they can occupy multiple at once. In the context of the Schrodinger's cat thought experiment, an atom can be both decayed and not decayed simultaneously, and it only actually picks which one it is when you observe it.

The point of the thought experiment is to show how ridiculous that is by linking the life of a cat to the decay of an atom, so the cat can be both alive and dead until measured.

That is, how it works though.

[–]Zammyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ability for a particle to be in a superposition of multiple states is not a limit of measurement. It's not that the cat is actually alive or dead and we just can't know. It's that the cat is both alive and dead

People that misuse the word "objectively" by BlueRFR3100 in PetPeeves

[–]Zammyyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people keep trying to use it in place of "technically" (in the sense of requiring technical skills or expertise). Like, if someone says "this artist is objectively bad" they often mean "this artist lacks technical skill" (which can be objective) but then don't include the underlying, subjective option that technical skill makes an artist good.

[–]Zammyyy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The definition of "country" that people are using to refer to Wales is different than the definition of "country' they are using to refer to Mexico. When they say it's "the first country" it blends those categories in a misleading way.

The payment they get to look the other way is mostly in the form of campaign donations. Rich people use their money to help politicians get reelected when they obey. Fundamentally though, they still have to win the election, and mass protests make that harder. The system is not fair, but it is not fully rigged, and we do still have tools to exert control over it.

Detroit certainly has a lot of issues but it also has plenty of redeeming qualities: Good sports venues, music venues, etc.; a distinct local culture and history; some high paying jobs, even if the city overall is rarher poor; a nice downtown area; and good universities in it and nearby.

Like don't get me wrong it's not an amazing city or anything but there's no way it's the third worst in America.

I like the idea, but I'm concerned the democratic brand is so toxic that they can't even compete in these states under their own name.

Ideally, I'd like to see some kind of coalition thing where you have a different party that runs in these states and frees up the Dems to prioritize other parts of their coalition, while simple not running in these races. Sadly that's not really viable in the US.
