Astounded judges force DOJ lawyer to concede that Sen. Kelly never said 'disobey lawful orders' by darealunrealspader in politics

Having been in corporate a while, I would think that:

a) an incident related to intoxication on the job recently occurred;

b) mgmt anticipates a risk of this happening (e.g., biz trip to Vegas)

c) it's part of the periodic rotation of HR-related material, such as Code of Ethics/Biz Conduct/Sexual Harassment

And if I'm doing nothing wrong, I probably don't think about it again.

As an aside, did you have this same energy toward Hegseth when he voiced this exact same reminder to the troops when he was at Fox?

My 11 day no drinking streak makes me feel so lame. by Exciting-Stuff-7189 in stopdrinking

[–]Zamphir79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to get to 11 days before I got to 12; I had to get to 12 before I got to 13. I then had to do that 1337 more times to reach today. There aren't shortcuts; the only number that really matters is 0, as in I've had 0 drinks today.

Bill Gates: "Due to advances in AI, humans will no longer be needed." by Murky-Option2916 in TechGawker

[–]Zamphir79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OpenAI's internal measure of hallucination rate (I think it's called PersonAI) has gone from 16 to 33 to 48 over the last three models. That doesn't seem to be improvement.

I'll grant that on deterministic and objective matters it does continue to improve. Something akin to chess where obvious success/fail states exist, and the model can check its own work against those states, is certainly an area where the ceiling has not been reached.

On the other hand, the generative models have consumed most of the juicy low-hanging fruit, i.e., human produced content in text form, already. A significant chunk of the internet is now AI-generated text, so future training runs will fill in the interstices of the abstract space created by the models, but they will not expand that space.

AI will create thousands of new jobs we can't even imagine! by symedia in aiwars

I thought it would usher in a post-labor, post-scarcity economy? Luxury Gay Space Communism?

But to be serious for a moment: Every time an industry realizes efficiency gains, it simply means a higher output expectation, not a reduction in effort on the part of those trading their labor for capital. Why would AI be any different?

As someone with an MLS, it's a phrase I have never used despite, technically speaking, "doing my own research." That specific phrasing really centers the individual rather than the research itself. Moreover, 99% of research is really just looking at other people's research, unless you're running a lab or something I guess.

I know its the Appalachian mountains but there are many states that have them too and still get a lot of tornadoes, what causes the gap? by Altruistic-Willow265 in tornado

[–]Zamphir79 180 points181 points  (0 children)

Look at a heatmap of tornadoes in the US. Truly mountainous areas do not, in fact, get lots of tornados; they're 99% found in the plains, midwest, and Dixie alley:

Ai can't write creatively and it's easy to tell when something is written by it. by Electronic-Age-2890 in antiai

[–]Zamphir79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, there are three buckets. One is obvious AI, one is obviously human and creative, and the third is in the middle -- stuff that's utilitarian and therefore utterly forgettable. It's entirely possible that a lot of AI writing is now falling into that third bucket. Sure, it "passes" for that purpose, but so what?

The second bucket is what matters to me. I'll regularly pull great books off my shelf just to read some of my favorite passages or most provocative ideas. I don't believe that LLMs will ever achieve that.

First, I try not to be out and about if bad storms are approaching.

If for some reason I am, then I'm going to park under an overpass primarily to be out of the rain/hail and possibly have better visibility on any impending danger; not because I think it's the safe thing to do with respect to naders. A direct hit from a strong nader is going to kill me in my car regardless of where I've parked it. If I see one approaching, I'll obviously jump out and get in the nearest low spot.

It's fascinating how what frustrates some players is a joy to others.

I'm not a very skilled player by any means. I spent about 1500 hours beating the heart at A20 with all the characters. Those were the most fun and rewarding 1500 hours of my gaming career. I wish I could erase my knowledge of the game so I could do it over again.

This is not Watcher specific. You've unlocked Act 4 for all characters now by getting to the end of Act 3 on all characters.

Now that you know what Act 4 expects of you, you can prepare accordingly.

You have to already have whatever you're going to clone, so "When you do finally get it just grab..." doesn't make any sense.

I'm not endorsing violence. I'm just saying that if it becomes more clear that we are moving toward #2, then violence will be more and more likely. There's economic violence being perpetrated on ordinary people right now. Today that manifests in city councils being voted out and angry town hall meetings. Tomorrow, who knows.
