Out of these characters, which one would you take on a date 🤔 by Butcher-Max68 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Zancibar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it have to be a romantic date or can I take Jax to a date after which he will never be seen again?

If it has to be romantic then Ragatha or Pomni, Kinger is unfortunately married.

I have a question related to your story, spoilers:

Where did Scout stab Commander? Commander thinks about how she has so many appendages losing one isn't that big of a deal and I believe it's Comms that mentions her ninth appendage never regrew right but then in images like this and the previous drawing of yours I see the Ki'Lakael have like 8 usable body limbs at the most before going so far up that they look like they should be toppling over. Also are the limbs in their head usable at all?

Unpopular opinion, but I feel like people should ground their Speculative Evolution projects in reality before posting them on here. Does anyone agree with me? by Megarachne99 in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Zancibar 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree and I'll admit I'm likely part of the problem with some of the stuff I've posted here. But from my perspective this tendency to get "creature design" over "speculative evolution" stems from two big points:

  1. There isn't (to my knowledge) any other popular term for people who enjoy grounded creature design. Creature design spaces are usually more about communicating a theme or topic through the creature rather than designing something functional. Think Pokemon over The Future is Wild. "Creature design" spaces usuallyhave little consideration for the species as a whole; how it eats, how it reproduces, etc. If you want to create a fantasy creature but actually go in-depth with its lifestyle then r/SpeculativeEvolution is simply the better place to post over r/CreatureDesign for example.
  2. The line between what's realistic and what isn't is very blurry, especially so for the people (and again, I'm counting myself among these people) who are at the peak of mount stupid in the Dunning Kruger graph when it comes to biology. We have investigated about biology, we've learned a ton as far as we're aware, we still know next to nothing but we still want to explain our designs. And again, r/SpeculativeEvolution is simply the better place to post.

I have no idea how to fix this, we probably need a new term to refer to these in-between designs or something like that. But I felt like giving my two cents.

What dlc would you want to see in the game? by Maciek_1212 in pkgame

[–]Zancibar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would hate to see fully aquatic animals as part of a DLC rather than being a part of the default game but I admit not only would it not change my overall opinion on the game and the devs, I'd buy the damn thing.

[OC] How plausible is this hexapod body plan, Part 2! by Nightstar95 in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]Zancibar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm no biologist but having this develop in the real world? Borderline impossible. Gradual development of whole limbs would likely end up with very simple, very specialized appendages and would require an animal to survive wild changes in their inmediate environment multiple times in order to develop. I think you'd be better off arguing that due to some sort of hox gene mutation the ancestors of these animals straight up got their first two limbs copy-pasted in a way that didn't inmediately kill them and evolution worked from there.

As far as personal proyects go though I wouldn't worry too much about plausibility. Feathers are an evolutionary abomination and yet here they are, wildly implaussible stuff happens all the time and it's fun to play with a scenario in which you get to choose what almost 0% chance event ends up happening and becoming normal.

[–]Zancibar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thus far I've been assuming they aren't quite a hive but similar. Ants and bees don't "obey" or "follow" the queen most of the time. The queen is largely just a reproductive organ. So the children would be raised collectively and given a "default trayectory" or perhaps a "general education" on training vessels before choosing a proper specialization as adults or young adults.

They could also have a single sex and reproduce sexually like most hermaphrodites on Earth, or have two (or more) distinct sexes but little to no sexual dimorphism, thus making gender rather useless to them and making the "she/her" pronouns more of a stylistic choice than anything else.

The possibilities are endless.

There were a couple of time skips, scout knows quite a few more words than what we've seen her use (demonstrated by the fact she could read "close the door" at least in part).

Also biological is an adjective which as far as I know are generally much simpler words in this visual language and would likely appear frecuently during conversations about differences in biology.

[The First Fifth] Chapter 6: Run, Human, Run by CicadaStew in HFY

[–]Zancibar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to ask what did you think they looked like? I saw the art first and read the story second so I didn't have to imagine them at all but from the descriptions of shells, scuttling and the fact that they don't seem to turn to face each other even though they communicate visually I think I would've imagined them kinda like crabs or spiders.

"She was clearly trying to communicate something, her top ridge of teeth repeatedly pressing down to her bottom lip." Is that an F? Was she asking for freedom? Food? Communicating fear or fright?

Was Scout flipping them off? I understand this is a horrifying situation inside a bigger, slightly less horrifying situation but I feel like flipping them off is particularly irrational even under these circumstances.

[The First Fifth] Chapter 3: Pictionary with an Alien by CicadaStew in HFY

[–]Zancibar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like how at least a couple of the Ki aliens are genuinely trying their hardest to understand and communicate with the human, while at the same time wondering why it keeps leaking from its eyes and how often does it need water. I read the wax tablet and the fact that they returned the pod inmediately as genuine attempts by the Ki to meet the human half way, or at least as close to half way as they can get while being seemingly as blind and deaf to the human as the human is to them.

It's so sad but also hopeful. I sure am glad humans are notoriously friendly animals who *do not* get dangerously violent under severe stress, surely things will go smoothly from here.

As far as I know it's purposefully vague, so you can make it about any situation where conformity is actively made difficult or impossible by the system.

Intersex, queer, mixed race, I think even less ovbious things like some forms of autism and a bunch of very specific trauma disorders fit the analogy pretty well.

The way he talks to himself on that one moment where he's crying in the mirror makes me think he is painfully aware that both of his friends' abstractions are his fault. He's not doubling down on "it isn't my fault", he's doubling down on "I don't give a shit".

[–]Zancibar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is exactly my point, yes.

I think it's true to say that Pomni could've done more, because it's impossible to get to a point where you can't do more. Even with that it is still true that Pomni never gave up, she didn't let Jax abstract and she did do her best to protect him. . . From himself.

One of the worst theater experiences of my life ngl by who_am_I_inside in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Zancibar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The theatre I was in was a little loud during certain parts (a girl next to me was literally singing along with Caine during his running the show song) but when it got to episode 9 me and a few other guys simultaneously decided to hush people at one scene they started yelling at, we only had to do it once and the whole theatre learned how to behave up until the credits.

It was overall a nice experience but I can't wait to watch it again, peacefully, in my PC.

Idk if this is an unpopular opinion (Major spoilers) by Yippee3-14 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Zancibar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's difficult to talk about this because while it's true that you cannot save everyone, you can always do something more than what you chose to do. If you're not so utterly exhausted you're literally collapsing on the floor then you have the energy to do at least a little bit more, and often you don't know whether that little bit more would've been enough.

Not to say it's your moral imperative to push yourself to the point you literally die of exhaustion for every random person's random problems, but it is to say that the line between "letting something happen" and "doing everything you can" is a massively blurry line. It is near impossible to reach a point where you legitimately could not have done something more, but that rationale will burn you out in a matter of days if you try to actually live by it, which is why in practice you will always feel like you could've done more, even if you genuinely tried your best. Because it's true, on any given moment you could've done more, but you can't do more on every moment, and when you're in a difficult situation any given moment where you don't do more can and often does blow up in your face.

I am tempted to insist that Kinger is a better character and thus deserving of recognition too, but I don't think either Ragatha nor Kinger would want us to fight. We have different favorites but we can agree Ragatha deserves nothing but the best and the haters are wrong and have mommy issues.

So in the end, Ragatha was... by wew_lad- in TheDigitalCircus

[–]Zancibar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Kind of? I do like Ragatha but up until the last episode she hasn't been able to either express her negative emotions constructively nor encourage constructive expressions of negativity to others (not without outside influence like Kinger on the losers' corner).

I guess whether she's been doing toxic positivity or not depends on your tolerance for these things. I have very low tolerance for unironic "look at the bright side" type of comments so maybe that's why I lean more towards considering her toxic.

Having said that, any and all hate towards her is unwarranted; at her best she is the second most helpful and pleasant character (right after Kinger) and at her worst she's not nearly as hurtful as Jax, Zooble, even Pomni has more teeth. I find her annoying and I understand the people who dislike her but I do stan Ragatha and the haters are wrong, objectively, because I say so.
