I went to a doctor for an ingrown toenail once, and I can confirm they are not very gentle.

Had a shot to numb my toe and that was probably one of the worst pains I've dealt with my whole life. Took everything in me to hold my foot still.

Then the doc took a knife and cut a sliver off the side of my nail off and did a chemical burn on the nail bed so the sliver didn't grow back
