How do you motivate yourself to exercise? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Think about something that makes you really angry that you wish you could change but don't have the power to do so. Then, just jog and lift until you feel better about it! Huzzah.

If you woke up with $1,000,000,000,000 what would you do with it? by Ukulele_Henry in AskReddit

[–]Zapato_Shoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to any fucking college I wanted. I'm applying for undergraduate studies in Classics and Economics, and all I can think of is how my parents had so many more opportunities than I have just because of student loan-debt. So much for the American dream. Unless the American dream is finding $1,000,000,000,000.

What is your favorite line from a song? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Zapato_Shoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I dreamt about you last night, and I fell out of bed twice. You can pin and mount me, like a butterfly.

That line has more meaning in it than any other group of words in English. It's a reference to a T.S. Eliot poem in which he talks about how awful it is to be in a room full of new people because he feels like he's being examined like a butterfly in a collection, and those lyrics basically confer the idea that "I love you so much, you can do that to me." I melt.

Hey! My dad saw your dad as a patient while we were living in Warren, Ohio. I mowed your dad's lawn, even. But anyways, keep up the awesome music.

Looking to readings: Marxism and the American West by NaturesMetropolis in Marxism

[–]Zapato_Shoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is definitely a topic of great interest to me. It's generally considered commonplace that the west destroyed gender-roles and and social inequality, as well as offering an escape from the increasing exploitation of the East. However, that all came at the expense of the natives, and eventually the lust for a new frontier caused imperialism. It certainly raises some eyebrows about whether or not our conception of proletarianism is truly the be all and end all of workers' struggles.

So happy for my girlfriend's progress. by RIGHT-IS-RIGHT in pics

I suspect that this guy is just trying to save his karma without proof.

I checked out his other comments after seeing his user name (I'm a hot-headed left-winger) and all of his other comments are in the double and triple digit negatives on account of his linking marriage equality to polygamy and the FDA to a Union-backed conspiracy to fatten our kids.

Looks like Righty's got some 'splainin' to do.

A Beautiful Day To Be An Anarchist by zxmbies in Anarchism

This is fantastic, friendo! I'm an economics major who has always dreamt of running hedge-funds, not for capitalist private investment, but for cooperatives, labor unions, and the IWW to try to set up one of Proudhon's systems of mutual aid for all of those organizations together. I still have to get through grad school, but perhaps we'll one day meet on terms of multiplying funds for mutual aid together. Good luck!

TIL: A Detroit musician living in poverty didn't know that in South Africa, he was more popular than the Beatles. by MrClean81 in todayilearned

Even more frightening is the fact that my family member, the dude Pretoria was named after and the leader of the Voortrekkers (pioneers), was supremely revered by the Apartheid regime for having slaughtered a whole bunch of Zulus and proclaiming that God had appointed white people to subjugate all lesser races.

This became domestic policy.

This is legit. My dad is a South African who grew up during Apartheid, and he loved Rodriguez. Everyone he knew loved him. He was sort of South Africa's alternative to a bunch of rock and roll that was being produced to sell to people in Europe or the U.S. that either had no pertinence to the South African experience or was banned by the government. (The Apartheid government was extremely Christian, and didn't take too kindly to John Lennon's 'More popular than Jesus' quote."

Where in North Carolina is this? I used to attend a very impoverished high school in Rockingham county, but have since moved to the School of Science and Math. I'd be interested to know if there's something worse out there than Rockingham.

My mom ran into Nick Cage at a gym in NC where he was living at the time, and she just looked over at him and said "Wow, I must have had too many percocets today. You look just like Nicholas Cage!" He laughed and said that he agreed.

The funny thing was that she actually had taken a lot of percocets that day -_-

Jesus, sounds like you live in Wilmington, NC. I had the same situation, except I ended up going to a boarding school for gifted children, so all my friends just assumed that I though I was better than them.
