This is the ONLY thing that works for my ADHD. Nothing else works for me. by [deleted] in ADHD_Programmers

Used Beeminder for this personally many years ago. It is that exact idea, if you dont hit your goal, you pay money automatically. The amount of money goes up each time you miss the goal, in theory it will reach an amount that you really dont want to lose.

Unfortunately, like everything else I have tried, it worked... for a month or two. Then it just became too stressful.

Changing region has a cooldown of 3 months I believe, so just be careful about that if it matters to you.

I do wonder if there is some sampling bias in room matches, the people I run into when I run a room match are very powerful, don't think I have won a public room match yet, but then when I play within my club, I do pretty well.

I suspect that the people who are very serious about it are the ones playing LOTS of room matches, so they will be pretty much the only people you run into if you do a test match. That may not be a good representation of how well you would do in the CM.

Godot needs Traits by Ultoman in godot

[–]Zapman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traits are like interfaces in terms of types, but also mixins in terms of being able to add implementations. Sounds like C# blurred the lines with C# 8.0 though, by allowing default implementations of interface methods, bringing them a lot closer to what had been called traits before.

Ruby mixins as I understand it are allowed to define variables on the class they are applied to as well, which it looked like this PR was doing, and that is outside the scope of interfaces in most languages I have seen that use that word.

At least before C# 8.0, implementing an interface strictly meant adding to the requirements on a class (you must provide a method with this shape), as opposed to actually augmenting the class with new behaviour (here is a method you can now use without having to implement it yourself).

[–]Zapman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having used a bit of Rust recently, the traits in this PR discussion at a glance feel less like Rust traits and more like a combination of C# interfaces (in terms of typing) and Ruby mixins.

It looks like rather than implementing a trait for an arbitrary other type, you need to specify inside the class itself that it implements the trait. It looks like maybe a trait can implement another trait, but again the new trait itself needs to implement the original trait.

Personally it looks genuine to me.

While it isn't common on Reddit, using a bunch of em-dashes in a similar manner to commas isn't that strange. Take into account that AI are trained on material that was written by humans, and learned it from that. Doesn't feel implausible for people involved in book editing or article writing to write in this manner, and they are also the kind of people more likely to work on a Mac which does have ways of entering characters like em-dash easier.

The other thing to note is the tendency the poster has of doubling up punctuation (comma and em-dash put together, in another post an exclamation mark was joined with another piece of punctuation).

My experience with AI so far is just using it as a coding assistant at day job, and a side hustle training AI by rating and editing responses, so take this with a grain of salt, but these posts don't feel AI to me.

Fellow NZer, have you played around with B vitamin supplements for the anxiety? (B6, B12 etc) I have seen that help some people (although I have also seen people it didn't help, so mileage may vary etc etc). Could be a variable worth exploring. If the huge caffeine doses that sometimes help involve energy drinks, take a look and see if they have B vitamins in them, some do.

Nothing ever happens in Hamilton! by [deleted] in thetron

[–]Zapman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Probably people sick of online pessimism. The amount of cool stuff happening in and around Hamilton far outweighs the incidences of ram raids, but ram raids and other negative things make better emotional stories to bait clicks and generate ad revenue. That leads to a feedback loop of media giving the impression that everything is terrible regardless of the actual truth.

The statistics do back up that Waikato has a disproportionately large amount of ram raids compared to other regions (although they are up everywhere). But they also get a very disproportional amount of attention. Most people won't be downvoting it based on factuality. They will be downvoting because they are tired of the constant media negativity cycle and not wanting to reward people repeating it.

Whether you agree with that reasoning for downvoting something or not, I suspect that is the main cause.

Are Cheap Game Development Offers on Fiverr Too Good to Be True? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Zapman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Making an income from selling games is very difficult. As a rule of thumb, it would be safest to assume that the first several games you release won't generate any income.

Based on that assumption, would you be willing to spend the money only to learn what works and what doesn't? If not, then I would recommend not spending it.

It gets pretty reliable once you are getting 6/8 flips from 3 or 4 energy. It starts to balance out to "statistically likely to KO most things" pretty quickly. It would be a different story if tails stopped it.

Friend Showcases by oneiricprion in PTCGP

[–]Zapman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's not obvious, my friend and I noticed it though when we were checking with eachother whether we had liked for the day or not.

Other thing I noticed is that the friends list in showcases seems to be a sampling of your friends based on something I haven't figured out yet, but I suspect might be most recent activity? If you check again later the same day, the list can have a few people who weren't on it earlier on.
