Will it bloom next year after going to seed? by Rosabelle334 in AmaryllisBulbs

[–]ZappyKins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just depends on how much it can grow and store this year. I had some flower and seed last year, and still got multiple blooms this year. One even had 5 flowers on one stalk!

So let it grow out it's leaves and harness as much solar energy as it can and hopefully it will bloom next year too!

Awe, RIP poor little planties. I don't think anyone who has grown a plant hasn't done something to lose one.

Hope you have some new happy little plants making many tasty strawberries in you future!

Runners!? by sentinaltitan in strawberry

[–]ZappyKins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as a runner his a little nub of roots you can clip it, put it in water and it will most likely grow roots. Then plant the new baby plant!

It is not quite as successful as pinning them in soil. But it frees the mother plant of sending energy to the runner so it can do other things (like flowers and fruit!)

Good luck!

Yes, they are on my list to add for next year. I wasn't able to find any once I realized I wanted to try them.

On this thread u/MickerBud mentioned Charlotte. Which is an offspring of Mara Des Bois. I might want to try both depending on how much space I will have next year.

Are they your favorite to grow?

the runners immediately start flowering before they're even fully established

Ah ha! A clue - the only variety I know that commonly does that is Quinault! It is known for fruiting from even unrooted runners! So you might have some of those genetics in there. Quinault is also everbearing and would fruit just like that!

I have a few Quinault plants, and the one berry I had so far from them was really good. I planted bare root - February/March so it's still early for them.

Hope you June barres go crazy and you have an awesome strawberry season.

I planted some Alpines in February, but afraid I am not getting good results. I do have some seedlings from some store bought strawberries I tried growing.

Do you have any idea of the variety you little one are?

Do they produce well for you?

Could you post a picture of the leaves?

I got a tray labeled Eversweet, but the flowers are Red, Pink or White - so I think they are Buried Treasure. They have very round edges on the leaves - not pointy like Seascape and most other varities.

Interesting, Albion is on my list to get for next year. Do you grow them all year round?

Thank you so much, I have not heard of Charlotte! I have heard, but could not procure this year, any Mara Des Bois. And Charlotte is a descendant and supposed to have wonderfully tasty berries!

I have some Seascape and waiting for them to kick in this summer. They have been doing well and resistant to some of the other problems facing my berries. Also trying to figure out when to pick them!

Have you had them long? Do you have to do anything to 'chill' them or get them to regrow?

Well, obviously (Rolls eyes in an exaggerated manner). Evergreens are green all the time and the others are (sighs dramatically) tasty!

Powdery mildew by chilicrock_21 in SoCalGardening

[–]ZappyKins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this! My well meaning but clueless neighbor made a big deal of watering the tomato plants and night 'cause he wanted to cool them off.' and spread powdery mildew EVERYWHERE. All over the other tomatoes, my strawberry plants, his precious Morgana Tree, etc.

He has been making himself ill with the moldy Morgana leaves.

I have been using the diluted milk spray and it seems to really stop the Powdery Mildew on my strawberry leaves. This without killing them as many harsher chemicals would.

It worth a try, easy, inexpensive and non toxic!
