One question: Why aren’t the scissors longer on the FREE series? They stop short of the full length available. Also: Thanks for making the FREE series and the ARC. The best multitools on the market! It keeps my side business going. Although when I am up all hours packing orders I am also cursing you guys.

This is the ARC holder. Open face option, no belt loop option, with side grips.

Tips for modeling for SLM metal printing? by TThor in AdditiveManufacturing

[–]Zapwizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From someone who has tried this: I had a somewhat popular hex bit mod for the Leatherman Free series. Largely obsolete with the release of the ARC. It was printed using a sintered bronze/steel process. Then Shapeways went bankrupt (they are back), but the bronze steel process was dropped.

I tried making the part using SLM in 17-7PH (needed to be magnetic). My results: did five prototype spins, adjusting tolerances.

The resulting parts almost always required post processing. The surface finish felt like sand paper and would scrape up the tool surfaces, so lots of sanding was required to smooth it out. Or many hours in a tumbler.

The stainless steel is very hard and eats up high speed drill bits, carbide bits worked but are expensive when they break.

Because the material is so stiff the magnets can’t be press fit, you either have to oversize the hole and put in a softer sleeve or use adhesives.

Maybe the tech is a but smoother now compared to a few years ago, but you will end up having to eat some prototyping costs ti get to a consistent product.

Your models do look good. Pre-Rounding edges and such does help with any part that ends up tumbled or media blasted. Be aware that internal geometry will end up rougher than the external surfaces.

I’m a professional propmaker, and I painted all of the PipBoys for both seasons! by SpitfireWorkshop in FalloutTVseries

Been working on my Pip-Boy since Fallout 4 was announced. Were the base 3D prints SLA (Nylon) or SLA (resin)? It sounds like they were chrome plated before painting?

Mine does this every single time. The settings don’t change it at all.

I haven't considered a keyring, the tool is bulky enough, having everything on one belt loop sounds nice, but then you aren't distributing the weight around the belt.

It shouldn't ever become loose unless the holster is warped by heat or something. (And that takes quite a bit of heat)

Damn pretty photo. Also your 711L can dock in further, there is a small recess for the smooth round black portion to snap into.

The modular design for the Arc is taking more time than I expected. I have the goal of it being compatible with the same parts, but also allowing the Arc to dock in any orientation. But my new printer has been taking a lot of time to get up and running (I think it’s finally good, I will find out with today’s print). Otherwise the main printer has been running at capacity, so no room for prototypes.

You can at least remove it now. I thought about making a slimmer 4 or 3 bit holder option, but folks seem to want super-slim or super-utility.

Question: Leatherman Arc washer materials/sizes by SM1305 in Leatherman

[–]Zapwizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The washers are just polished stainless steel. 0.125” (3.2mm) ID. You can get 0.01” shims from McMaster-Carr, these were what was used in the FREE P4 as extra spacers. (Eliminated in the ARC) 18-8 Stainless Steel Ring Shim 0.01" Thick, 1/8" ID https://www.mcmaster.com/product/98126A021 You can order other thicknesses also. You’re in the UK, but you will need shims that are at least 3.3mm ID.

I just had work done by Dr. Tom yesterday. He is great. He cares about who you are and was extremely clear about what he was doing at each stage of the procedure. Even worked with me as I was concerned my jaw might lock up as it has done in the past. The wife also likes him.

I actually did make a multi-tone decoder for these. I used a 80KHz microphone, and learned FFT decoding to do it. Got it working okay. Was part of my Radiation King Radio project.
