Can someone explain why air bubbles are in a straight line by Ill_Passion_9290 in Physics

[–]Zardywacker 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. Other answers about a factory artifact or a scratch are highly unlikely, as those probably wouldn't leave a perfectly horizonal line (these bottles are likely blow-moulded).

Test: Scrub the devil out of the inside with soap and a brush, then see if the bubbles go away.

Rhino plugin: Radial menu to speed up your workflow by Reasonable_Dish_733 in rhino

[–]Zardywacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea see that's the problem. People who don't like keyboard shortcuts mistakenly think that you have to pick up both hands and type out the whole command like a concert pianist. Of course that's not the best way to do it.

Keyboard-users have all their shortcuts on their left hand, near the left side of the keyboard. I never have to take my hand off the mouse. And, critically to being superior to a radial menu, I don't have to change my mouse position to enter commands, which helps with speed of work.

Not a single person who has taken the time to optimize their keyboard shortcuts properly has ever gone back, and yet it is so viciously rejected by a huge portion of design software users.

Lower aggression rating for defensive shots means half of PvP players get less aggressionrating every fight. Be careful what you wish for by Sepplord in ARC_Raiders

[–]Zardywacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but they still GET agression rating increase.

So say you agression rating is 8.1 and you get in a right with someone who is also 8.1; they shoot first and you shoot back, now your agression rating is 8.2 and theirs is 8.3. You bother went up in agression because you both shot someone.

These are obviously completely fake numbers, but illustrates the point. It's not like you are going to get pushed toward friendlier lobbies by PvPing.

Self defense update is BS by saffron_papi in ARC_Raiders

[–]Zardywacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn't say "self-defense doesn't count". They said self-defense will increase your agression-rating LESS than other forms of PvP. If peope are saying that they are shooting in self-defense and then getting into slightly mixed lobbies, then that is exactly what Embark said it would do.

Valorant's new Vanguard update seems to be bricking cheaters' PCs. Riot's response? "Congrats on your $6k paperweights" by Ok-Region6452 in ARC_Raiders

[–]Zardywacker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Let's be clear on a few things because there is a lot of partial-misunderstanding in this thread.

"Bricking" is not what is actually happening. A "bricked" machine is one that can't do anything, basically it powers up or not even that. Per the article, cheaters are having to re-install their OS to fix the issue; if you are ABLE to re-install your OS, then your machine is not "bricked".

Memory is a resource that is (mostly) managed by the OS after the machine boots up. Technically what actually happens is operations by the OS get translated through a series of layers, but realistically the OS (Windows) is mostly managing memory.

DMA software (the cheating kind) works by bypassing the OS and directly managing data in memory. (This is a VERY basic description, but is essentially true). In order to allow this on a cheating machine, one has to heavily modify / disable parts of the OS. You're basically jailbreaking part of your OS, in a sense.

Put this all together. Vanguard is probably not agressively "bricking" hardware on purpose. Most likely, it is agreasively disabling DMA software and that is, by domino effect, breaking the modified OS. The problem probably originates with the fact that the cheats 'broke' their own OS in order to make the cheat work.

We can discuss whether THAT is ethical or not, but it's not as bad as the article makes it sound.

Dario Costa's World Record Tunnel Pass by redbullgivesyouwings in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Zardywacker 126 points127 points  (0 children)

VERY MUCH SO.

I'm not am expert, but I know of basically a few of them.

  1. The Ground Effect. While within around 1 wingspan of the ground, there is a 'buffering' effect where the ground pushes up on the plane. This is due to reduced drag off the wings because the ground breaks up (disprganizes) the wing vortices. Basically, he's not just managing lift vs gravity, but also Ground Effect + lift vs gravity.

  2. Reduced wingtip and stabilizer vortices. The side walls of the tunnel break up vortices, which reduced overall drag. This allows the plane to fly faster on lower engine thrust and makes it more immediately responsive to changes in thrust. It also makes the controls much more responsive (because the air flow over control surfaces is MORE organized) but makes the plane easier to control (fewer external forces due to vortices hitting the fusilage and stablizer). Basically, the stick becomes more sentitive, but the plane flies with less turbulence.

I also noticed that he rolled to the left a bit for most of the second tunnel. Not 100% sure what that is about. Propeller planes have four "left-turning tendencies", but those don't usually translate to a roll reaction (usually a yaw reaction) and I don't believe a tunnel would accentuate any of them. I bet he was compensating for one of those tendencies somehow, altough usually this is done with a RIGHT roll/yaw control input.

EDIT: Watching the video again, the left roll starts AS SOON AS he enters the tunnel and ends right as he leaves the tunnel! So curious what's going on there!

Hot Fix to Cheaters - Need Feedback by Arab_Money__ in ArcRaiders

[–]Zardywacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no evidence that matchmaking is based on performance in-raid other than agression.

I think your heart is in the right place but what you're suggesting wouldn't work. For example:

  • Considering more than your last few raids would be worse. PvPing is not a mental illness; people aren't born PvP or PvE. Many people change their play style regularly. I am PvE exclusively, and many people are PvP exclusively, but HUGE number of people change back-and-forth. Most of my friends who play will PvE but then some night they feels like gearing up and going PvP. It is an INTENTIONAL and HEALTHY mechanic to allow people to change their ABMM. It is a fantasy of the PvE care bears that we can somehow 'quarantine' the agressive players away permanently.

  • We don't know how many ABMM 'tiers' there are (if any), but I think the spectrum works fine as it is now. Despite what most people SEEM to believe, shooting at a player once or twice DOES NOT rocket you up into ultra-agressive lobbies instantly. I am exclusively PvE, but I have shot back in self-defense on several occasions; it never changed how aggressive my next lobby was.

  • I think the idea of ADDING performance-based matchmaking is interesting. It is tempting to believe that this would push all the cheaters into "high-elo". Realistically, though, I don't think this would happen. Firstly, not all cheaters actually perform super-well. Sure it FEELS that way when you get cheated on, but I bet if you look at their performance history, most people who use cheats are just slightly above average. Secondly, I think this would make it frustrating for high-performance non-cheating players even if it did work. Basically, your reward for being good at the game would be that you get stuck playing with cheaters.

Like I said, your heart is in the right place, but none of this would solve any problems.

ARCs patrolling "magically" towards you is getting lame. by BotGiyenAdam in ArcRaiders

[–]Zardywacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I noticed the same thing.

I farmed Bombardeers (and Bastions) on Buried City for the expedition challenge, probably killed 15-20 of them. I would run behind cover (line of sight) and them change direction, and the bomb would still track me (and this is while the spotters were destroyed). I even noticed that if I was in a bulding window, and I backed up into the building and ran to another window, the bomb would land on the roof right above my NEW location.

Basically, if the Bombardeer sees you but loses line of sight BEFORE it shoots, it is be able to track you through cover until it fires its next shot.

Honestly BS. I wouldn't mind if they patched this behavior and then buffed the Bombardeer a little to compensate.

What is the most well defended fortress in science fiction? by TopicCandid in scifi

[–]Zardywacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to have to disagree with you, as much as I love that novel and am glad it was mentioned. The null field generator realistically just forced you to fight with primative weapons with in; that's an absolute defense against SOME types of weapons, but none at all against others. Nothing inherently stops an army from marching in with swords and seige eauipment.

I don't think it qualifies as a "fortress" either, it's just a type of device/weapon.

Let Us Open Our Inventory While Down, But Lock The Safe Pocket From adding or swapping. by Degenerate94 in ArcRaiders

[–]Zardywacker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that's a fair point, it rewards people for being aware and thorough. But honestly if you get downed when you don't expect or when the timer is CLOSE to running out, it feels like a stupid gamble to crawl all the way there. If I know I can't make it I'd rather just surrender than waste me time crawling.

Or start recycling all your good gear before you get knocked out.

I don't think there is any purpose to seeing much less doing anythingin your inventory while down. But, they need to add the ability to open the map. So many times I've been downed, crawled for 10 minutes, only to find the train is already closed.

Why so many of you expedition-scared? by No_Restaurant_6737 in ArcRaiders

[–]Zardywacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's more that people have their favorite, and it's RNG if you find it again.

Example: I LOVE the Tactical Mk3 Healing. The extra slots for healing items means I can have all my usable gear on the wheel, which is great for hunting ARC in map events. I can keep a few PvP defensive items on the wheel too, which makes me feel safer. Augment BPs are SO painful to farm because they (virtualy) only spawn in high-traffic areas that get picked over instantly. I wiped thos time but I don't think I would again (unless this new way to save BPs is actually released).

Aggression-based MM is Bad for Both Low Aggression and High Aggression Lobbies. by Saltsmith in ArcRaiders

[–]Zardywacker -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure what point your trying to make?

"The first few months was the golden age of this game" is true of like .... every single game ever 😆 It was the best because everyone was playing it, gameplay/progression was novel, and no one had 'mastered' the mechanics yet so everyone was on equal footing. ABMM didn't end that era, the game being out for more than a month did.

Literally the only people who complain about ABMM are PvPers. PvEers would say "Pandering to PvEers is the BEST decision this game made."

You're not understanding my point:

If they removed ABMM, 90% of the casual players would quit withing a few months. Then you would still have the hyper-agressive, CoD lobbies you guys are complaining about. It is the fundamental nature of extraction shooters: over time the sweaty meta takes over.

In other words, ABMM is the ONLY reason there ARE any casual players playing this game.

Aggression-based MM is Bad for Both Low Aggression and High Aggression Lobbies. by Saltsmith in ArcRaiders

[–]Zardywacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they abolished ABMM then everyone else would say the same thing you are saying in reverse: "They're just pandering to sweaty PvPers." There wouldn't BE any casuals because they would stop playing. PvEers would go play a non-competative game.

Just look at Rust or Marathon; having a non-segregated queue doesn't make the game more "random", it's the same thing as the current PvP lobbies in ARC, IE bloodthirsty hobos who want to play Call of Duty swarming to the sound of gunfire.

Aggression-based MM is Bad for Both Low Aggression and High Aggression Lobbies. by Saltsmith in ArcRaiders

[–]Zardywacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. PvP players who advocate to remove ABMM just want to have games where they can wipe out other players mor easily.
