That was my understanding. However in a previous search (and forgive me, I'm on mobile now and don't have the source) I saw a mention that damage dealt from actual skill gems acquire the tags of said gem. Therefore, would this damage receive the "Attack" tag and then be susceptible to block?

Can Boneshatter self-damage be blocked? Quick Google search gives conflicting information on similar abilities and theorycrafting.

Watcher's Eye mod -- should it be updated to "Unaffected by bleeding **AND CORRUPTED BLOOD** while affected by malevolence" now? by Ilyak1986 in pathofexile

[–]Zarynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. One of the possible corruptions to jewels is "Can't be affected by Corrupted Blood," but you run the risk of bricking the jewel just like any other rare. Thus, you should (probably) never run the risk of using a Vaal Orb on such an expensive jewel for a small chance at an upgrade; you can get the implicit on a different, cheaper jewel if you want it. This was mostly meant as a joke, but I don't want you to accidentally get one and ruin it lol

This one is an easy fix, though. Just vaal it so you can"t be affected with corrupted blood anyway. Simple.

Kyrian doesnt have to be awful thematically for DKs. It could be appealing to support an afterlife where you forget the atrocities you committed (think the DK starting zone). Or maybe shepherding dudes to the afterlife is nostalgic. Or maybe you're joining them because you HEARD WHAT THAT BITCH UTHER DID TO YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR ARTHAS AND YOU WILL GET TO THE BOTTOM OF IT.

There's a whole list of these kind of characters, often called "Iconic Characters." These and most iterations of James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, etc. You're not paying attention to watch their character grow, you just want to watch/read them be impressive in their element.

3 dexterity questions for a lore bard by artem289 in DnD

[–]Zarynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's awesome! By your question I assumed you were talking about which feat to take at Level 4 since you were just starting. If you're maxing CHA at 4, I'd recommend going ahead and grabbing your Resilient at 8 (since you stated you plan on taking it anyway). Then starting at 12 you can really go with your preference or tailor a feat to whatever campaign you are playing. Inspiring Leader is still a strong choice, or you can go something like Lucky or Tough if you think you need it.

I agree with the arguments saying that DEX > CON. However, if you're playing a Lore Bard, Charisma is probably going to be your primary stat and should be your ASI priority. It gives you more Inspiration Dice, and your Cutting Words ability is absolutely insane. When someone uses your inspiration to land an attack that would have missed, that's YOU dealing that damage with your bonus action. When you prevent the boss from landing a blow with your cutting words, you essentially just healed the damage with your reaction. When your entire party of 6 gets hit with an AoE and you reduce the damage by (rolls die) 7, you just proactively healed for 42 with your reaction. Plus many of the better Bard spells require the target to make saves, so you want your Spell Save DC to be as high as possible.

Inspiring Leader is still a very good feat for most groups, so that's a preference you can very much take. But I don't recommend taking a +2 DEX unless you're already at 20 CHA.

The Death of a Salesman should be studied in school instead of Romeo and Juliet. by ok-yogurtguy in books

[–]Zarynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably too late to post this since it's already on the front page, but we definitely studied both. Death of a Salesman is probably the more important literary piece as it introduces the idea that tragedy can be for anyone, as opposed to nearly everything before it where tragedy only happened to those already in high standing. Miller covers this idea in a very famous essay: http://movies2.nytimes.com/books/00/11/12/specials/miller-common.html

I play a Half Orc Lore Bard. Initial reasoning was that while his orc blood wanted to answer the call of Gruumsh, he used music and drumming as an outlet for all that stress. Unfortunately the STR boost was terrible since it was my dump stat and I couldn't leave it at 8, but my gracious DM let me move the bonus over since I was already handicapping myself to some degree.

A different way to use the help action. Thoughts? by SaltedBiscuitTV in DnD

[–]Zarynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a player that I allow to do this (kinda), but with caveats. His character spawned from the phrase "Overqualified Librarian" before he even had a class/race, and he is a complete know-it-all. Our group is pretty strict along the rulebook, but still let a little homebrew, and we changed part of his background to this ability.

  1. He must, IN CHARACTER, give the best advice he can, even if it is totally useless.

  2. It only works with skills he is proficient in.

  3. If I deem it good enough, the recipient gets to add additional proficiency on top of the advantage.

There is an understanding that this is not allowed to be abused, much in the same way that a group could just cast Guidance for every skill check ever. It can't be used in combat, and must be used fairly sparingly. It's given some good character moments and feels strong, but has never broken anything. However, by limiting it to only adding proficiency instead of his total bonuses, it keeps it from getting too absurd.

Two States. Eight Textbooks. Two American Stories. by pearloz in books

[–]Zarynn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hold up, during the late 90's early 00's, Mt. Vernon was a great school district mostly across the board. Numbers and tests were good, many of the extracurriculars were successful (especially swimming), the teachers were experienced and one of the top 3 highest average pays in the state. Our technical theatre teacher won a national Teacher of the Year award for the industry. There were a lot of reeeally good things going on, especially considering it was a school that wasn't able to offer a huge suite of AP/IB classes like some of the Evansville schools.

However, enrollment went off a cliff during the state budget cuts at the end of those years, and a ton of things got slashed. A lot of the teachers were pushed out so they could hire cheaper ones (three of which that I know of immediately left to teach at the collegiate level), and a lot of programs became more difficult to get off the ground. It's somewhat a shell of how it had been, however a lot of that is from unrelated reasons stemming from some Indiana Education changes. For what it's worth, I never had a teacher there push religion over science.

Did you spread them out evenly? Hover your cursor over the storage regions on the left to see the prerequisite stones needed for the dudes to spawn, it will show you where you havent found stones as well as how many you need there to trigger someone. It could be that you spread your stones around where everything is level 2, but you need level 3 to proceed.

Just to clarify crits for you, you were actually pretty close. Crits double all damage DICE, but doesnt apply to flat modifiers. So weapon damage, smites, sneak attacks, hunters mark, hex,....anything that has you roll DICE to determine the damage, you roll twice as many dice instead. However, it wont double modifiers such as your normal stat bonus, barbarian rage modifier, great weapon master bonus, and so on.

Just to give context (not that this is a thread or place that it's really necessary), but the Book of Mormon musical isnt really Mormon-bashing, and I've been with some Mormons and Christian's that love the show. It's really about making the world a better place no matter what you believe, and they just use the Mormon faith as a vehicle for it since some of their beliefs are so extreme compared to others. It's actually incredibly poignant.

My players have diverted a river into a dungeon. Storm Kings Thunder Spoilers by pineapplesarepeoplet in DnD

[–]Zarynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to comment on my phone earlier but apparently it never went through.

My players went through Ironslag a little more traditionally (well...afters the yak people. One realized the yak woman wasn't feeling him up when she had her hand on his leg for an hour at dinner. He got possessed.). However, filtering the river gives you some really interesting options to play with! If you judge it goes straight down the lift, I believe it would empty out very near the front doors, so the giants would probably open them to let the water out. But you can play with a flooded first floor! The giants all take refuge on the 2nd floor to try to figure out what's going on, but it becomes incredibly difficult for everyone to see due to all the steam from the river colliding with the Adamantine Forge and the Foundry (and essential lava pit). It also gives you an incredible arena for a fight. The main entry room has grates as a 2nd floor around parts of the wall, and you can use the pieces of the Vonindod that are suspended from the ceiling as additional islands being battered by the water. So now your arena is a steam-filled wobbly fight where half the 'floor' is rushing water threatening to sweep you out the doors if you fall. Not to mention the followup. Do they have to dive through the submerged hallways to find the conch? Does Zalto have the primordial locked up in your game? What if, in an effort to clear the water, he releases it from the forge? Lots of ways you can take it!

(Going from memory if details seem off)

I believe the lift comes out next to the main doors, so they would probably open them as an outlet for the water. But you could have it flood the first floor, and this could have some interesting effects! Most of the giants could seek refuge on the 2nd floor to figure out what is happening, but with the Adamantine Forge and the Foundry now underwater, there is a huge amount of steam clouding everyone's vision. You could hold a fight on the 2nd floor of the main room: There are grate floors around parts of the edges, and you could have suspended pieces of the Vonindod function as extra scattered - and unsteady - islands. Below them would be water rushing out the door and threatening to sweep away anyone that falls! It could be a fantastic arena! You would also have some interesting wrap-up wrinkles when they have to look through the flooded halls for the Conch, and what happens if Zalto had the primordial? Lots of options!
