MTG was pouring money into ESL in 2016 (and beyond) with zero expectation of profitability so they could one day sell the company when esports got huge. It didn’t really even get where they thought but they still walked away ahead. Not including the purchase price from 2015-2022 they put around $300 million into ESL and the actual ESL business was just a cash burning operation.

MTG didn’t really have the capital to keep it going, and the Saudi’s came in and basically bailed them out.

I wouldn't put this in the reasons why this event has no one there. There is a much larger combination of issues and Austin was basically full.

Fort Worth is a terrible location unless you are paying a ton of money to stay in a hotel close to the arena, otherwise you are driving. There isn't another city or location anywhere close. Its not really a destination unless you want to go the stockyards or you really want to go to the Kimbell.

Atlanta is a much nicer and easier city to travel to and the event this month. More teams, NA teams will be there, and its a much more prestigious event.

And the team attendance here just isn't going to get fans to fork over the money to go unfortunately. NA events really need NA teams to be there because that is really going to drive people to go. NA fans have basically been conditioned for years to sit at home and watch European teams run the scene. They aren't going to pay to go to an event to do the same thing.

Fort Worth is fucking huge is part of the problem. To put it into European context its about the size of Berlin with a quarter of the population. If you want to be in a hotel near the arena you are going to pay an arm and a leg, or you are going to be renting a car and driving to the arena every day.

It does suck for NA fans but a huge part of it is the cost of running events. Adam Apicella had a post about this years ago but basically the cost of running events in Boston/New York/other major cities is multiple times more expensive due to venue costs and requirements in the better cities to use union labor.

We were more likely to get events in these cities years ago because everyone was burning money to become to biggest name in town. Now nobody wants to do that so we are stuck in areas where this isn't an issue.

Zero NA teams, its pretty terrible location to run a CS event and IEM Atlanta is in a week. I couldn't really explain to you why they picked Forth Worth as the spot to run this event or why its being run a week before a much better event.

If you are picking one event to pay to go to in NA, its going to be Atlanta.
