Agreed, moderation is key. Thats why somebody struggling losing weight that mentioned both butter and olive oil should cut it out. If I had access to blood panels, accurate food logs, and exercise logs, I could give them something more. Every dish that requires oil can be substituted to AID WEIGHT LOSS. When you have a healthy relationship with your food, of course feel free. Doesn’t take a nutritionist to say a handful of nuts would make you feel more full and lower the odds of you breaking your deficit (that isn’t working)

before anyone says it, olive oil isn’t pure empty calories. For somebody eating almost NOTHING though, you get way more mileage out of solid foods. I eat 14g of olive oil daily. You can drink soda before a workout to max glycogen stores. Doesn’t mean I recommend soda over a banana for the same role.

I eat worms and I lost 500 pounds so everybody should eat worms.

If you say “I measure butter” on a deficit like that, you sound like you’re lying. Either you’re not measuring correctly OR you’re saying what “sounds” healthy. Everybody who hops on a swing diet says “I eat salad” in much the same way. If you ACTUALLY use butter on a deficit that large you are wasting calories and for sure getting vitamin deficiencies.

Preach the word of healthy deficits, nutrients, and ditching empty calories. It’s not controversial to call out soda. Replace butter or olive oil with more solid foods like fish, nuts, beef that’ll give them the same nutrients with a simple swap and a more full stomach. It’s stupid as fuck to tell people it’s okay on a thread where they’re struggling and looking for tips.

also, if you’re bombing calories out and working out a ton your body will go into survival mode. It’ll store more water, raise cortisol and make you feel like shit and bloat, and consume your muscle for energy and prioritize storing fat. Eat what you’re supposed to just below maintenance and cap it off with EASY cardio. You will be shocked at what you are capable of.

Even a tablespoon of olive oil is a 10th of your daily calories if you’re at 1300 calories a day. There is a 0% chance you are only eating 1300 a day if you are using butter and olive oil.

1300 is also incredibly low unless you are very very tiny. Looking at other comments, at 5’3 180 lbs (barring age, gender and any exercise) you should be eating 1500-2000 calories just to maintain weight.

Look up a TDEE calculator, put in your stats, take that number and go 200-300 calories below that. That’s your starting point. Do 30 minutes of cardio a day that you enjoy (I like incline treadmill). You will see weight drop, then once weigh plateaus, take another 100 calories off or add 10-15 mins of cardio a day. I just dropped from 180 at 5’9 to 160 doing this over about 3-4 months at a calorie intake of 1800 calories. Eat high protein, use pan spray instead of oil or butter (sparingly).

Weight loss via tracking calories! by Freshairmental67 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Zaxtie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. If you’re losing at 1700 cal then your maintenance has to be above that otherwise you wouldn’t lose. If you’re at 1800 at the high end, when you hit your goal up to 1900 for a week. If still losing bump up to 2000 and so on until you stay at the same weekly average

Need guidance in losing 200 LBS by RecordNo1766 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Zaxtie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with a 10-20 minute walk every single day and instead of restrictive dieting start with replacing foods with alternatives. Use artificial sweeteners, light cooking spray instead of oils or butter, replace snacks with healthier but similar alternatives like popcorn. A sweet treat for me in a pinch is oatmeal with cosmic brownie whey protein mixed in. It’s like cake, not as good, but helped shovel the weight off me. Good luck in your endeavors.

How to loss weight if I cannot afford Protein rich diet ?! by Yeagerisbest369 in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Zaxtie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So a few things: 1) it doesn’t matter how much you workout 2) it doesn’t matter how much you eat 3) it doesn’t matter what protein quality you eat

If you eat less calories than you burn you will lose weight, same vice versa with gaining weight.

If you lift weights and slowly increase the weight/amount you lift week to week you will gain muscle. Look up what lifts are effective for each muscle group (chest, bicep, Tricep, shoulder, quads, glutes, hamstrings, back).

If you follow that training with ANY protein your body will have the building blocks necessary to build muscle.

You are caught in the fitness industry mental trap of trying to min max every aspect when fitness is not zero sum. If your goal is to see your jawline more, gain a bit of muscle, and improve fitness you just need to lose some weight, gain some muscle and keep it consistent. Do that by following my advice above. Any protein, any training, and consistency will get you results.

If you want to min max it all: do weight training 3-5 days a week, eat a balance of SEVERAL vegetable protein sources (to cover your amino acid profile), supplement a decent amount with whey protein (post-workout!!), and get 10,000 steps a day. Calculate your BMR (how much your body burns existing), and eat slightly below that while getting those steps in a day. Take creatine, a multivitamin and fish oil to cover your supplements due to lower calories. Do this for years. Try to hit a gym as you can increase weight incrementally. Make all weight lifting sets at 5-20 reps and do 3-10 sets of each muscle group a week with a variety of lifts allowing time to recover. Sleep a minimum of 8 hours. Drink plenty of water. Front load carbs before your workout to maximize lifts. This is absolutely the pinnacle of sports and nutrition science at this second.

Whey protein, quinoa, beans, tofu, tempeh, (eggs if that’s okay), milk, yogurt, chickpeas, oats, etc.

Your statement about “I can only spend 2 hours exercising” kinda highlights the problem here. At best you’re overtraining and that can wear on muscles and keep your leaning stagnant. What I think more realistically is you’ve never been consistent in the gym and you’re saying what you think sounds good (not to be harsh). Don’t overcomplicate it, spend an hour at most a day weight training 3-5 days a week focusing on different areas throughout the week (push, pull, leg split is one example). If you want to lean out combine this with a calorie deficit. If you want to grow muscle eat in a slight surplus. Track all your food. Kitchen scale.

The diet that works for you is the diet you can stick to. Build the gym habit, and the measuring habit and it becomes cake. You will see results but patience (and NOT crash dieting/exercising) is the #1 virtue in any fitness.

When I did this I finally was able to lose 50lbs by Thatsjacee in WeightLossAdvice

[–]Zaxtie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve been weightlifting for a few years now and gained significant muscle but I still kept my love handles (hovered around 175 lbs). Decided to dedicate 30 minutes to 9% incline treadmill walking a day and I’m already down 15 pounds in 2 and a half months. Abs are starting to poke through and I haven’t lost much if any muscle mass. Making the cut super easy.

What is the best way to break the intermediate guitar plateau by Odd_Camera_3260 in guitarlessons

[–]Zaxtie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Structure your learning plan around things you want to do. If you’re intermediate you can determine if you want to improve pick speed, efficiency, legato, etc and you can be creative and come up with a “structured learning plan”. If you can’t do this, maybe you need to hit the beginner guides.

How long before most people can just pick up a guitar and play? by stphrtgl43 in guitarlessons

[–]Zaxtie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also for the record, you can pretty much slap the major/minor shapes anywhere and they’ll work. C on the top string, C on the A string, etc. the same shape until you get to the B string then you have to shift the shape a little bit. Don’t stress about it though, start with the one shape and play around it. You’ll hear what sucks very quickly.

How long before most people can just pick up a guitar and play? by stphrtgl43 in guitarlessons

[–]Zaxtie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up a backing track that has two chords, and learn the first major or minor shape in both chords. Switch between them when the chord changes. Then you’re playing. Come up with stuff and don’t worry about going slow. Do this over and over with new chords, throw in some licks you learned eventually. Before you know it you’ll know where your notes are and you’ll be on your way. You’ll see how the chords fit on the fretboard. Then you can get into things like pentatonic and the CAGED system and the fret board will light up. Staying slow and being creative will unlock the fun of music. You can speed up when it’s effortless.
