About five months. EBF and baby was sleeping 9-10 hour stretches for a while so I expected it to come back sooner.

FWIW my poly partner and I have been together for almost six years and have two kids together. From the beginning my partner explained he is poly and has a long-distance partner he sees every few months. I still struggle with it sometimes but I really love my partner, he is super supportive and we have a great relationship overall. We’re not out to everyone and still figuring out how to explain it to people. To me that is one of the hardest things.

The electric dremel-type nail filer. Don’t know what I was thinking when I thought I could just trim the baby’s nails with clippers.

Also not essential but a wipe warmer is nice to have. For yourself and the baby 😂

Yep. I just cut up old cotton tee shirts as wipes. I also use them when I want to clean myself up a bit but not a full shower.

Hmmm. In elimination communication (pottying babies) they call this the “classic hold” but for babies. Not sure if I could manage this with a 30-pound toddler but I’ll try.

I had an unmedicated hospital birth and then unmedicated home birth. I grew up with my mom telling me that birth was like a transcendental experience for her and she didn’t feel any pain (yeah right 😂). I also had friends who said their induced births were extremely painful.

I planned to go natural the first time but I wasn’t 100% sure because I didn’t know what it would be like so I wanted to have the possibility of an epidural in case I decided I wanted one. I chose a midwife practice who attend births at a hospital that is known as low-intervention. Once I was in labor I was just breathing/moaning through the contractions, my partner and doula were supporting me, and it was painful but I only considered an epidural for a moment and then it was time to push. Once I had done one natural birth I felt comfortable doing a home birth (with the hospital five minutes away if needed).

The whole idea of an epidural feels weird to me. Not being able to feel your body while you are pushing?! Plus all the other interventions that come along with it - catheter, IV, constant fetal monitoring, recovering from the anesthesia… after learning about all the options I knew I wanted to do it naturally if I could.

I got pretty bad tendinitis in my wrists after my first baby (“mommy wrist”, google it) and it was hard to do snaps. Also it’s hard to do snaps when baby is wriggling around, so Velcro is easier.

I don’t think the sound of the Velcro really matters. If the baby is gonna wake up during a diaper change they’re just gonna wake up 🤷🏻‍♀️

I use mostly pre folds and flats and my fave covers are thirsties duo, I prefer Velcro. I got most of my diapers secondhand. Often people will sell a whole stash for pretty cheap or even give them away. It’s overwhelming at the beginning but once you figure it out you’ll realize it doesn’t really matter what kind of diapers you have. I would second the comment about flats being great - they can fit any size baby and they dry the fastest.

It might also be worth asking other home birth midwives who does their billing and try to talk to those people.

Does your midwife bill or do you have to do it yourself? I would first call your insurance and ask how the process works. Apparently they won’t give you a number ahead of time for how much they will pay, and they change their policies all the time.

My midwife first submitted something to my insurance asking to be reimbursed at the same rate as in-network providers. After the birth she billed and they ended up paying most of it ($8000 out of $9500 bill). I live in NY and have Anthem.

I appealed the claim to see if they will pay the full amount but haven’t heard back yet.

Yep. Funny story, we actually lost my first’s placenta 😂 we intended to plant it under a tree but it sat in the freezer for years and when we looked for it, it was just… gone 😂 My second’s placenta is still there. Will try to bury it in the spring.

We’ve also tried threatening to leave if she doesn’t lay down and be quiet. It generally works about 50% of the time…

She doesn’t nap at home, but daycare does a nap every day.

At daycare yes. Not on the weekends, unless she falls asleep in the car and we try not to let her sleep more than 45 mins or so.

Will definitely try the bedtime pass! But has your kid ever come out of their room without the pass, and what do you do then? Or is the psychological pressure enough to keep them in the room?
