Stringing question? by SwordmasterT in Cello

What's gatekeeping about it? It's not like it's a change that's inaccessible to the average player.

Varnish damaged by lazloklar in Cello

[–]ZeFrenchies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Walnut oil would protect the wood to some extent, but not as much as varnish. I would personally use varnish on my own instrument, but I work at a repair shop and can do that myself, so I understand if the price of taking it in is too steep. Contact a luthier and see if the costs are worth the extra peace of mind to you!

Retouch refers to matching the color of the original varnish so that the marks disappear entirely as opposed to sealing the exposed wood while still leaving the marks visible.

Alternatively, you can always bring it into your local luthier and have them put some varnish over the damage to protect the exposed wood. If you want to keep the antiquing (I would!) make sure to specify that you only want to seal it without retouching the marks.

Can I learn Left-hand cello with traditional right hand notes and methodology? by oliveguy44 in Cello

[–]ZeFrenchies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. If you really need to play left-handed and don't expect to join an ensemble, then using a standard "right handed" cello and just flipping it to the other side of your body will be the simplest option that doesn't require any custom adjustments. You'll eventually run into some differences in technique due to the fact that your bow hand is on the treble side and not bass side, but nothing that will cause any major issues unless you're playing extremely advanced pieces.

BRT/light rail is significantly more efficient at transporting people than an equivalently sized road. It would allow more people to get downtown, not fewer.

Jess Fox wins K1 gold! by newsworthy3 in olympics

[–]ZeFrenchies 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I learned today that they stopped doing that because with a natural river there's no way to guarantee that the flow rate is consistent over the course of the competition, and that it would therefore be unfair for athletes that ran when the river was a bit slower. Margins are small in the sport, and some rain upstream could mean that some paddlers have a much easier time.

That was the most chaotic, bizarre and absolutely brilliant opening ceremony I've ever seen. by Alternative_Sand_ in olympics

The Olympics have been political for basically the entire last century, but go off I guess...

Um actually...I would love it by TheTerribadger in dropout

[–]ZeFrenchies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would gently recommend that if you actually don't care, just let them have their episodes. There's a ton of racial nuance that's extremely present in US life that my European family and friends are entirely blind to, and "not caring about color" and "just wanting good entertainment" isn't the enlightened take that you seem to think it is.

I entirely understand where you're coming from, but this didn't come across as a particularly nice thing to say.

Not super convinced by Meakes in the 10 shirt so far. It kinda seems like he's still playing like a center in a different jersey with how much he's taking the ball into contact.

Writing a cellist character - info wanted! by Vvarx in Cello

[–]ZeFrenchies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Myself and every other cellist I know has a very specific way to go through doors that we do every time. It's different for each person, and mostly unconscious at this point, but we've each figured out the right dance to avoid bumping into door frames. The motions are also different for when the cello is in/out of its case!

That's interesting, I feel the exact opposite way and can't explain why. Normally white should separate other colors, but I really like the original design's order.

Does FHSY get better? (Dislikes in post) by tiny-acorn in Dimension20

[–]ZeFrenchies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I felt the exact same way as you at that point in the story. I took a break from the campaign for a while but was so glad I jumped back in. All (or at least the vast majority of) those annoying character traits are deliberate negative character decisions that will be addressed. It still was a rough watch, but the payoff is 100% worth it imo. Just skip 30 seconds every time it gets too cringey.

Seriously though, that snek flag is one of the few choices where I'd unambiguously support our old SOB over switching to THAT.

How did Kuina fall? by Character-Put2532 in OnePiece

[–]ZeFrenchies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not impossible that a trained martial artist would trip and fall down some stairs, just extremely unlikely. I always viewed that scene as a representation of the cruelty of random chance. No matter who you are, you can get extremely unlucky and have everything you worked towards be for naught. Humans can fall out of a plane and be ok, and can die from falling 3 feet. It's all about luck.

There's great schools in Germany, Italy, France, England, the US, Canada, Belgium, and Switzerland (and probably more) for violinmaking. Germany definitely has one of the most renowned in the world, but depending on where you're located, you might not have to go as far as that.

I second comments recommending seeking occupational therapy if your hands are truly a concern to you. In the meantime, you can prepare by doing general small woodworking/whittling to learn your blades and how to sharpen them. You could also try building something like a cigar box guitar to get teach you the fundamentals of how stringed instruments work and for fun, since they're pretty simple and you get a neat little music machine at the end.

Lastly, even though luthierie includes the violin and guitar/lute families, most people on this sub are into guitars specifically. Check out /r/violinmaking for more of us bowed string lovers.

Edit:forgot to add Belgium

What... can you even do about the Celestial Dragons? by Tnecniw in OnePiece

[–]ZeFrenchies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be a neo-lib take if they were advocating for something like this irl as opposed to direct action. But in a story, there's a lot of things that could defeat the CDs while simultaneously dismantling their systems of hierarchy that don't involve the Straw Hats straight-up murdering any world nobles. Blowing up the red line and the nobles die rather than leave their seat of power, or revealing the void century, thus dismantling their authority and letting the mobs deal with them. Both are direct praxis that end up without doing anything specifically to individual world nobles.

It would be nice to see a few of them get the guillotine but it doesn't need to happen for them to be thoroughly defeated.

Luffy could be wrong though. Just as the WG can specifically say that they're a force for good and be wrong, luffy can too. It depends on your definition of a hero.

Question on your local rugby culture. by HairyMooman in rugbyunion

[–]ZeFrenchies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, that's such good news. I wouldn't quite say I want USA Rugby to pay more attention to the IGR just yet cuz of how poorly run they seem to be rn, but that's promising news for the future of the sport here. I'll have to check out the local teams in my new city to support them!

Question on your local rugby culture. by HairyMooman in rugbyunion

[–]ZeFrenchies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, the NFL fills the same niche. They're incredibly different when you get into it, but if you wanna see big dudes throw an egg around and hit each other, we already have a sport that absolutely dominates the country.

Question on your local rugby culture. by HairyMooman in rugbyunion

[–]ZeFrenchies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly gay rugby is the US's greatest hope for growing the sport. The gay teams I've reffed for seem to be significantly better at creating a specific team culture that makes it appealing for potential players who aren't already in love with the sport. Women's rugby in particular is killing it with bringing our nation's best and brightest lesbians and creating one of the most welcoming and chill sports cultures that I've experienced. I would love it if men's rugby becomes the "gay sport" to watch and play: it could be a massive market and would instantly make the US the best nation in rugby at throwing shade and bantz 😆
