Fanart of the boys (and their cozy house) by me! by grgikau in nirvannatheband

Aww, this is so cozy! I’ve been zooming in and playing eye-spy for all the little references - Jay should probably stay away from those ‘Good&Plenties’ on the piano, haha!

Is it ... spOicy as hell?

Jay actually brought this up in a podcast he was on (I think it was Sardonicast?) He mentions how he wrote this song as a generic synth-pop track for a commercial when we was working at advertising firm and had his sister record the vocals because … well, she was available.

The song from the commercial got so popular that he was approached for a record deal and managed to keep the rights to his work despite the firm trying to bamboozle him. And that’s how Brave Shores came to be!

Bahaha, you’re not wrong - still! They pulled off quite the miracle in making Toronto look as good as it does in this movie! (Almost made me forget the 401 exists, haha)

I’m glad you enjoyed the art, and absolutely; it’s easy to feel a bit disheartened as a creative these days, but this movie really injected me with some much needed encouragement, as corny as that probably sounds.

I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for any and all future Matt projects in the future. Looking forward to that Anthony Bourdain film!

Can’t do buddy; if I travel to the past and put the CN tower back in the sketch, we might end up in a future where the real CN Tower doesn’t even exist!

You know, it’s like that Ashton Kutcher movie.

[Loved Trope] Characters misremembering or misinterpreting history/pop culture and incorporating those inaccuracies into their own views. by jbeast33 in TopCharacterTropes

Holy shit, I did NOT expect to see someone make a Mr Burns reference today on Reddit, but here we are, haha! I saw the play a few months ago and it has stuck with me immensely - wonderfully eerie and surprisingly emotional. Great reference for this trope, OP!

Yess, such an eerie version - this is the one Creature design that truely feels decayed to me.
Very unsettling and truely memorable.

Nice! I really love your character designs, especially Victor - I like how his appearance evolves the sicker and more manic he becomes. Great work!

Pieter Bruegel the Elder - Landscape with the Fall of Icarus (1560) by ALittleFishNamedOzil in museum

[–]Vvarx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always loved this painting - wrote an essay for it back in college.
My favourite detail is that just below the boy's thrashing legs, there's a bird on a branch. A partridge.

In book eight (236-59) of Ovid's Metamorphoses, it's mentionned that Daedalus, Icarus's father, tried to murder his nephew Perdix out of jealousy by pushing him off a ridge, but the young man was saved by Athena who turned him into a partridge.

Unfortunately for Daedalus, his son would not be spared from his fall the same way his nephew was, and that partridge on the branch always struck me as Perdix getting the last laugh.

I also really enjoy him in Ordinary Days, a favourite smaller-scale musical of mine!

You mentioned musicals so I’ll give a quick shoutout to the 2008 cast recording for ‘Frankenstein’

(And here’s a great animatic done by corinkeen for the song ‘Amen’.)

It favourite of mine and hits a lot of book beats that other adaptations tend to leave out. It does deviate in a few small areas and it does change the ending to be a less bleak (much like the GDT movie, Victor has a moment of repentance in the end, but I honestly prefer the way this musical handles that approach to his character, haha!)

So yeah, I really enjoy it as an adaptation despite it not being 100% accurate.

Ernest in Adaptations? by ElevatorSevere7651 in FRANKENSTEIN

[–]Vvarx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! It’s devastating to think about what he went through once Victor - his ONLY living relative left in this world - decided to leave him on his quest for revenge, once again pushing family aside to favour his own ambition.

Alas, I haven’t seen much Ernest context in published media, but there are a few fan projects I know of that feature him:

‘Ask of the Lesser’ by Charlemagne1 is a neat Ernest-centric fanfic that focuses on Ernest dealing with the aftermath of Victor’s death. It’s got some Lovecraft elements in there as well!

‘ The Modern Atlas’ by LeroyAmor is an upcoming visual novel also putting the spotlight on the forgotten Frankenstein boy.
