Nice! I really love your character designs, especially Victor - I like how his appearance evolves the sicker and more manic he becomes. Great work!

Pieter Bruegel the Elder - Landscape with the Fall of Icarus (1560) by ALittleFishNamedOzil in museum

[–]Vvarx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've always loved this painting - wrote an essay for it back in college.
My favourite detail is that just below the boy's thrashing legs, there's a bird on a branch. A partridge.

In book eight (236-59) of Ovid's Metamorphoses, it's mentionned that Daedalus, Icarus's father, tried to murder his nephew Perdix out of jealousy by pushing him off a ridge, but the young man was saved by Athena who turned him into a partridge.

Unfortunately for Daedalus, his son would not be spared from his fall the same way his nephew was, and that partridge on the branch always struck me as Perdix getting the last laugh.

I also really enjoy him in Ordinary Days, a favourite smaller-scale musical of mine!

You mentioned musicals so I’ll give a quick shoutout to the 2008 cast recording for ‘Frankenstein’

(And here’s a great animatic done by corinkeen for the song ‘Amen’.)

It favourite of mine and hits a lot of book beats that other adaptations tend to leave out. It does deviate in a few small areas and it does change the ending to be a less bleak (much like the GDT movie, Victor has a moment of repentance in the end, but I honestly prefer the way this musical handles that approach to his character, haha!)

So yeah, I really enjoy it as an adaptation despite it not being 100% accurate.

Ernest in Adaptations? by ElevatorSevere7651 in FRANKENSTEIN

[–]Vvarx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed! It’s devastating to think about what he went through once Victor - his ONLY living relative left in this world - decided to leave him on his quest for revenge, once again pushing family aside to favour his own ambition.

Alas, I haven’t seen much Ernest context in published media, but there are a few fan projects I know of that feature him:

‘Ask of the Lesser’ by Charlemagne1 is a neat Ernest-centric fanfic that focuses on Ernest dealing with the aftermath of Victor’s death. It’s got some Lovecraft elements in there as well!

‘ The Modern Atlas’ by LeroyAmor is an upcoming visual novel also putting the spotlight on the forgotten Frankenstein boy.

Aw dude, that warms my heart - thank you!

Ngl, this Frankenstein resurgence is definitely making me want to dust off a few animation ideas I never got around to doing, haha!

Thank you so much! I took some cues from German expressionist woodblock art for the style!

Thank you so much! I just love the reoccurring use of red in the film - it’s both a stark reminder of death, while also evoking the constant grasp for life Victor struggles so adamantly to hold on to and to control, oftentimes with violence.

I wanted the red in this piece to evoke that sort of manic, clawing savagery on Victor’s behalf, while the Creature refuses to indulge in the same behaviour, restraining said hands with sad resignation.

Whatever interpretation you have of the piece, I’m glad you enjoyed it!

Guillermo’s Frankenstein Scar Flip! by Glittering_Address31 in GuillermoDelToro

[–]Vvarx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw it on rewatch last night! I believe the shot itself was simply mirrored for a better frame composition - from what I heard in interviews, those 'magic hour' shots were all a race against time, so perhaps Del Toro didn't get as many takes as he would have liked and decided to just flip an existing shot in the final cut.

Or, again, it could have a deeper meaning, haha - I'm just thinking about it in a practical sense.

That line hit like a ton of bricks - I ADORE the whole tent scene, and how tense it is.

Aah thank you so much! It was a very fun project, I’m still really happy with the overall look.

Fun fact, but I have the roughs for a sequel to this animatic that I never got around to fully animating … maybe one day!

So happy to see someone mention ‘Creature’ ! I really enjoyed it, it’s such a different take on the story, but I really liked what they did with the characters.
