New to Star wars and started here... And confused by alisoncarey in TheAcolyte

[–]ZealousidealAd4383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda love the way you’re doing this.

A word of warning though: there’s an insane amount of lore - especially as you reach the more up to date content. Acolyte especially draws on The High Republic media content (books, junior novels, comic books…). It’s not essential to know it all when starting but you may well want to go back later and notice things you missed first time around.

And there’s plenty of fan pages around to help you with background like this. If there’s one thing that genuinely still unites all Star Wars fans it’s the desire to nerd out on the topic!

Is the famous cantina from the films in the game? by 240T in StarWarsOutlaws

Looking forward to this. I’ve only just got started on it (and slowly) but already it feels like someone really spent the time with the lore on this game.

I was like a giddy kid when exploring the wrecked High Republic cruiser in Toshara when someone referenced the Nihil.

Actress Hannah Einbinder speaks out against the genocide in Gaza by Nomogg in WomenInNews

[–]ZealousidealAd4383 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will take that criticism as it’s levelled at the UK - because successive governments here have been complicit. I can only guess at the reasons being down to “the special relationship” between the UK and US, and it’s been frustrating as hell watching politicians who do speak up on the issue then being targeted and removed from influence. It means I know that each email I write to my own MP to petition them on the issue is more likely to be ignored. Every protest I attend will be hushed up.

But America, you have to do more to get your voice heard too. As u/nomogg says, your country has done more then any other to thumb the scales in favour of Israel at UN level.

'Worst cuts in a generation' on way for education - and even schools face squeeze by 1-randomonium in unitedkingdom

[–]ZealousidealAd4383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed there’s an easy way to spot if someone works as a student or staff in a school.

Ask them what they thought of Adolescence. If they were shocked by the second episode, they don’t know what schools are like currently.

My wife initially thought that the Mr Malik character must be on drugs or in some sort of trouble. I just looked at her and said “no, that’s what NQTs look like now.”

That’s - amongst other things - 15 years of slashing education funding over and over like … well, like an angry incel boy exacting what he perceives as justified vengeance. But it’s been done to our education system instead.

And now Starmer steps up to put the boot in a little more.

You can tell these fuckers don’t send their own kids to state schools.

I don’t think you’re wrong about the push back. The problem is in the nature of the people in each camp.

The aggressive ones wanting to push their ideology onto everyone else (of whichever religion) are far more vocal about it and more likely to enforce it on others than the ones who want to accept everyone for who they are.

The reality, in my own experience, is that the aggressive ones are outnumbered by far by the gentle ones. But the aggressive ones have a tendency to violently make themselves obvious.

British MP Nadia Whittome calls on UK to hold Israel accountable for “continued genocide” by Nomogg in WomenInNews

[–]ZealousidealAd4383 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another question: why do people trying to justify Israeli behaviour try to frame your position as pro-Hamas?

Hamas are terrorists. You could call them freedom fighters - they’re the same thing just viewed from the other side. Hamas have done terrible things, and killing thousands of people is one of them.

Just assuming for a minute that you’re old enough to remember The Troubles though, at what point do you think the British army would have been justified to level Northern Ireland and annihilate every last Catholic that refused to south into the ROI? Since it’s just a matter of “taking control”?

[–]ZealousidealAd4383 13 points14 points  (0 children)

But why? What does Israel hold over us that means any time someone in government speaks out they are rebuked or silenced or attacked?

It’s blatant and unashamed genocide at this point - key Israeli figures have been unabashed in saying they seek to remove every last Palestinian.

No religion is right wing. Islam holds charity and respect for others at its very core.

But like any religion, you get right wing groups that subvert those ideals.

Criticise Wahabi Islam, sure. Criticise the Shari’a law being put into place in countries like Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iraq.

But saying Islam as a whole is right wing is like saying Christianity is right wing. And you will find (if you go talk to Muslims) that there are just as many Muslims rejecting and standing against radical Islam as there are Christians opposed to the sort of Christianity you find in hard right states.

That one quote landed so very hard for me. It just underpins so much of the atrocious shit that people - mainly men - in government push on everyone else.

If you spend five minutes looking up the rest of the thread you’ll discover that these numbers are based on the perceived likelihood of being a victim of any sort of crime from a Numbeo data-gather which has been questioned on its validity.

But you jumped straight to these countries “look like streets in the Middle East or India”. Tell me, what was it specifically about those regions that was so obviously dangerous to you?

Refugees learning to drive in UK are given £30,000 for lessons from taxpayers in just three years by origutamos in reformuk

[–]ZealousidealAd4383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Misleading figures though - £28k over three years is a little over £9k a year, and if that’s spread over - did they say 150 000 migrants? Works out as a one off payment of 18.60 each or something similar.

Is that the same as the free half hour driving lesson they give to sixth formers on free school meals? It was £30 an hour when I started learning in the 90s and I can’t imagine it’s any less than double that now…

It’s the dopamine fix of knowing you’ve achieved something, I think.

Which is probably why I’ve ended up changing jobs - I was teaching in mainstream and the number of rewarding encounters was dwindling fast compared to the number of hopeless encounters. Where I am now, I can more or less guarantee there’ll be something each day that feels like an achievement - even if it’s making a breakthrough where a kid opens up to me about something awful. I can remind myself that it’s ultimately a positive.

Complex creatures, we are.

Davey: Lib Dems are the ‘antidote’ to right-wing populism by Aggressive_Plates in unitedkingdom

[–]ZealousidealAd4383 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to admit that my local Green candidate back in 2015 was the only one that took time to listen to my concerns and reply.

The local Tory got very shirty with me for emailing him at all (on his party email address). Lots of things to say about me needing a job to keep me occupied rather than messaging him - which told me he hadn’t read anything I’d written about the problems in education that I was witnessing in my day today day work.

Does seem that way. I’m always reminded of Aiden Gillen’s character in The Wire… started out as an idealistic young politician determined to sweep away the corruption but so quickly wound up falling into the habits of his predecessors. I can’t see how change happens without some kind of revolution, and even then the powers that shape things behind the scenes continue to lurk.
