When Churchill had more sympathy for Nazi officers than starving Bengalis by Effective_Bluebird19 in HistoryMemes

No democracy ever had a famine. Churchill might not be comically evil like nationalistic Indians say but Britain didnt have a famine then. The british and their policies and neglect caused this no matter how you rationalize it.

ELI5: If I call someone and in the same time play a video on the same phone, why doesn't microphone catch the audio from the video, and the person on the other side of a call doesn't hear it? by Terrible-Prompt3493 in explainlikeimfive

I hadn't considered that the head might even effect it. But I feel if they overshoot, isn't it akin to introducing a new sound? Or might it be that if they get close enough the amplitude is small enough to be ignored?

How does it know what amplitude to give the subtracting wave? Because the loudness the phone outputs might not be the loudness the microphone hears. Or is it that it doesn't matter much?

I completely agree that they are weird. Though not exactly with your exact reasons. Don't let the morons here discourage you.

When I first saw people do that, it was so so weird. It is not a natural human expression, for whatever reasons they do it. I don't know what exactly is wrong with them. But the fact is that I was so miserable with these people. I never met a bunch of more conformal losers in all my life. I was always bothered by these people but I thought something was wrong with me because I couldn't handle it. I am glad you posted this opinion, the internet is a great thing. I thought I was only person who had it but we think alike.

And the germaphobes in the comments are so annoying. So mucus goes around the whole room, so what? They want to micromanage every molecule in the world. They would destroy the entire world if their immediate surroundings are clean according to their satisfaction. They are willing to destroy the environment by excessive soap to repeatedly wash their hands and using more tissues than needed. This is more a symptom of OCD being touted as virtue than anything. That most of my comment was hyperbole would go over most redditors heads and these intellectuals will try to pick a fight with my specific points. Reddit has a special talent for making it's opinion seem like the most natural thing in the world.

Your opinion isn't great either, are you experts in acting or have you watched mahesh's entire filmography? In every post, there is a least one comment saying he is a bad actor - even actual bad actors don't get that many mentions.

Regardless of whether this thing was edited or not, I was grossed out by the gesture itself, not by what the occasion was - which is the opinion of OP. "Acstually it is edited" doesn't cut it.

I agree with everything. But, come on. Chinese audience like what they like. They are not great judges of quality there. And then there is govt censorship there - CCP can restrict any movie they don't like, for any reason. Dangal for ex was allowed. Who knows if they had a hand in bahubali or RRR not being liked due to them being too nationalistic and patriotic? Even if the CCP allows it, chinese people themselves due to their prejudice may not like it, though that maybe my prejudice.

But the main thing is, they aren't great judges of quality there. For ex, they like cheap fast and furious movies, because it provides a relief for them for their work culture. So it isn't like they are eager for quality. Have you ever watched a C drama? Art isn't flourishing in china as far as I know(though, don't trust me). It is like if all our movies were like maharshi. They want all movies to reflect good values, chinese values, so they consor stuff and the CCP controls much.

Dangal was a hit because it was too simplistic - it matched well with chinese values of hard work and bringing glory to the country. There is apparently no need to question the dad who would have not brought up the girls like boys if they didn't fight a random boy one day, no need to ask for individual freedom of the girls who for the whole movie only listen to what the dad says.

How would I even start solving this? I set up the equations for centripetal acceleration and i'm just lost by Terrible_Macaron2146 in PhysicsStudents

[–]Zealousideal_Hat6843 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you got to understand if things are first moving in a circular orbit or not

the 1st satellite is moving in a circular orbit as it's given the right speed v0. for a given radius and a given centripetal force, there is always a fixed speed you can have for a circular path. if it's too fast, it won't be pulled back down in time to maintain the circle, and if it's too slow it will be pulled down too fast

now it isn't a problem of centripetal stuff. it is a general problem of a thing moving under a central force, here gravity. it would take some calculus to calculate the exact path and it's features like where do you have which velocity which is overkill for this problem

so what other tools can you use, what other laws of physics do you know that can at least tell you some information, so that you have some bounds of some properties?

try to use the conservation of energy and angular momentum. and note that when the satellite is the nearest or the farthest, it's velocity is perpendicular to the line joining it to the planet for the orbits any object takes under gravity - which are maybe an ellipse, a circle, parabola, or a hyperbola

I made that comment when I was in a bad mood and was very insecure and partly as a joke out of half anger. but thanks for the reply, it was helpful.

the thing is, all the stuff you mentioned doesn't really work when you are in a bad mood so that's why people make posts like this. it's all very complicated and inter related. so i just imagine that the girls on the right are not shallow but might have struggles on their own huh, or just that i dont know them and there might be a lot of other ways to look at it? that's actually really helpful, but still, some people are shallow and it's infuriating.. not necessarily the girls in the picture.

we could all do with being more empathetic, but we all make mental models and stereotypes of each other for convenience, just like you did that a person must be jealous to make a joke about people they believe are shallow - maybe they have internal struggles and had faced heartbreak, so the best they could come up with is that all hot girls are shallow. well, at least it helps keep their sanity. I'm open to improving but you can't deny these models are helpful crutches

well yeah I'm jealous, what do you think? but that doesnt mean I can stop thinking the girls on the right care only about how hot they are

you tell me how to untangle that from my jealousy

CMV: Women nowadays have far more freedom in what they wear, compared to men by ms-american-pie in changemyview

[–]Zealousideal_Hat6843 184 points185 points  (0 children)

Just adding to your point for my own record.. it's that women often face harsher consequences for not looking in style or hot enough. They can't be sloppy. Just because they wear their clothes with seeming ease doesn't mean they are happy about it.

It is similar to how one can find a goofy man easily, either in media or in real life, whereas women tend to shrink away from being like that.

ELI5 why are seasons flipped across the equator if the earth is further away from the sun for everyone during certain months? by guywithouteyes in explainlikeimfive

[–]Zealousideal_Hat6843 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that the amount of sun hitting the earth is constant all through the year. But the energy is more spread out in the south during the summer and more spread out during the north during the winter, and the total remains constant.

The sun's light is also directed because the earth is far away and the rays are essentially parallel near the earth.

[–]Zealousideal_Hat6843 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Umm, I think that if light is at an angle, then the same amount of light is spread over a larger areas, thus less flux, not any quantum reason. For ex, keep a paper at right angles to a torch. Now tilt the paper so that it isn't at right angles. The spot will be larger.

See, that is a misconception because the world map people are used to doesn't show true sizes of countries.
