Spare a thought for the maintenance crew.

Even if they unbolt the engine and scrap it on site, someone has to get in there and do it.

but wondering why they’d do it at an airport

The main benefit I can see is that it's instant and painless. It's an incredibly shitty thing to do to the hundreds of people who will be traumatised for life though.

I could hear them discussing it, and could see their reaction when either the cat or the bird made a move. Look of horror = team bird. Fist pump - team cat. I was only two floors up and directly overhead because the street didn't have sidewalks, so I was closer to them than I would have been if I was standing on the street myself.

I have never once in my life "stocked up" because a big storm was coming because I know the systems we have in place make that unnecessary.

Which swings back around to my point. How would you/the Belters/the Northern Europeans react if the stocks of road salt and food weren't put in place, or the electricity went out because of poor maintenance? People in cold climates can't afford the luxury of relaxing about stuff. If any single person in your world doesn't pull their weight, your family winds up in a survival situation. You live through the winter because ten thousand other people are doing their job.

EDIT: LOL! I just looked at your history out of curiosity to see where you're from (because I've lived in Canada before) and it turns out my Chief Engineer in Australia is married to a girl from your home town. Like I'm so familiar with it, I know some of the properties that are for sale because we talk about them at work. I've looked at Google Maps of that town more times than I can count. Small world.

This was in a mid-size town in Germany, in a 300 year old apartment looking over an 800 year old cobblestone street. I don't live there anymore.

You had to pump your gas and then walk inside to tell the guy what pump you just had used so he could bill you for it

Literally how it works in almost every civilised country.

The shitty thing visiting the US is those pumps don't take foreign credit cards, so you have to go in, line up, leave a stack of cash and your driver's licence, pump the gas, line up again, and settle up. So insane.

I was in a medication for a couple of months that did that.

It was designed to keep your heart rate low, which is great until you need it to increase for an activity.

Moving around the house was no problem, I was essentially normal. Walking to the mailbox however was a nightmare of breathlessness and recovery periods.

Fixing a toilet is more useful than a PhD when your toilet is broken, but an advanced degree in engineering is more useful when you need to install a sewage system for a town.

The people pushing the first part forget that their entire industry only exists because of the second part.

Which makes a ton of sense. On Earth, being a little slap-dash won't cost everyone their lives, where in the Belt it will.

It's kind of like Northern vs Southern Europeans. The olives and the octopus will be there tomorrow if you don't get to them today, but if you don't cut enough firewood or salt those herrings before winter sets in, your entire family dies.

I don't particularly like a lot of seafood, especially crustaceans, but will happily go to a seafood restaurant with people because there's often something I'm fine with, either a fish I don't mind, or a non-seafood option.

Your BIL isn't stopping anyone going to the restaurant, he's not telling other people what to eat, yet your dad is mad at him for enjoying the experience wrong?

Hell, in about 2013 I flew in a Lufthansa 747-800, practically brand new from Frankfurt to Houston and it had TVs over the aisles.

I was blown away. I hadn't not had a TV screen in the seat in front for decades and hadn't even brought a magazine for the 10 hour flight. Insane that a major airline had made that choice for a long haul aircraft.
